The guys at ‪@mineoperator‬ invited me into their gold mine to find my first ever California Gold. I dug from the gold bearing hard rock quartz vein. Milled it all down to a fine powder, and panned out my first California gold. WooHoo! And if you want to see more of the technical of the underground mine, check out ‪@mbmmllc‬ who was also there and did a very different video of the day.

Dan, I have a suggestion: Since you have a beard, wearing a half face negative pressure respirator provides you with no respiratory protection against inhaled rock dust! The dust just leaks through your beard past the face seals of respirator. Get a powered air purifying respirator and wear it every time you may be exposed to rock dust. (One of the Mine Operator guys wore his and appeared well protected.) I'm a retired safety guy and I just couldn't help myself 😷😅

I used to work in a factory that processes spices. We used a lot of very similar equipment, but on a much, much larger scale. It's interesting to see the similarities. We had hammer mills (not this video, but previous). We had sifters using 20, 30, 40, 100 mesh, etc, to separate the finished product. I think it's really cool to see the crossover. Processing large materials into small materials seems to be quite similar, regardless of what it is.

I wish I was young enough so I could go pan gold again in Northern California. Those Rivers and Creeks are going to be all stirred up from the huge runoff and I guarantee you there will be gold to be had if one had the physical ability to go get it. When I was a young man I panned the Truckee River off and on and it was a blast getting Gold Fever when I saw a few precious flakes in the pan. Those were good times for me.

That mineralized quartz is EXACTLY the same as the pebbles I find in the glacial moraine here in central NJ. It's 100% identical in appearance, peppered with tiny black hematite crystals, and small crumbly pockets of weathered sulfides and calcites. And, sure enough, it contains very fine gold. The largest flakes I've ever found are only about 2 millimeters across, and foil-thin. I also find greenstone-carrying quartz, and quartz with manganese streaks and splotches. Since it's from a glacier that dragged stuff all the way from Canada, it has EVERYTHING it picked up in the journey all mixed together.

Dan just a little fyi. If you ever go panning for gold in Calufirnia you will want to know that much of our gold in Coloma, Folsom, American River and various other water ways has Gold covered in Mercury! So you could be panning and end up with lots of grey/silver stuff at the bottom of your pan that is where the gold should be. I used to gold pan with my dad as we are California natives that live with the areas where large amounts of gold are found " Gold Country". We used to find gold with Mercury from the old miners. It's so detrimrntal to the environment & sad. Dad had to deal with the Mercury issue out side in the fresh air. There are still areas with clean beautiful gold here though. I live about 20 min ftom all the huge 20/30 ft. Tailings /Piles left over from the huge commercial dredges that were used during the Gold Rush. The gold on the American River is pretty clean but Coloma's gold is faurly polluted. Take Care.

When classifying to 20 mesh and how dry the material is, would winnowing be an effective method of separation or would the fine gold blow away in the process? Just noticing the wind and the dust and it came to mind.

If you ever get a chance; a video from Sutter's Creek. CA would be interesting. I worked for UPRR a ways North of there and when we dug a 7'x7'x7' foundation I found a 3' across quartz crystal cluster. Sadly, since we were on the clock. I couldn't take the time I wish I could have. I have about 30 crystals ranging from 3" wide x 5" long to 1"x 3". I found a few 1/8" chunks that might be gold. The quartz vein went from the top of the hole, diagonal, to the bottom corner where we found the cluster. It's under road, sidewalk and RR crossing mechs now.

I was digging in gravel about 12 feet deep I found some stuff that was very brassy colored it was heavy in the bottom of my pan and it moved like mud if I kept it in water was told it was nothing but no one could say what it was.
