Of course if you leave a nugget in your pan and put more paydirt on top, your first nugget might find another nugget, and if they love each very very much, you might just get some baby nuggets! Not a lot of people know this.

I like that you replant things if you can and are cautious of the moss . People laugh at me sometimes but once after I found a nice flowerstone on the beach I noticed I missed a little snail that was still attached and alive. I was all the way back home at the time but I put the rock back in my truck and drove the snail back down to the beach, found it a tidal pool and put it in. That snail had a very interesting and confusing day that day.

I find that geological history is pretty interesting to learn about. Like how in some places ancient seabeds caused certain rock formations and the like. Something like that but for the Fraser river area and the host rocks history could be interesting. Like many others have said, you do an excellent job at explaining things in an easy to understand way and I very much enjoy your lessons.

Man thanks to guys like you, I made my biggest find of my life of rock hounding so far..45lbs Agate it's a dark grey like a Botswana found on my trip across Canada from Kelowna...I found it in Amethyst country outskirts of thunder Bay Ontario and I was in the middle of a field on top of a hill and it was almost impossible to see and in a heavily traversed area and went unnoticed for ever.. with just the tip of cracked agate sticking out of the ground was a small piece the size of a finger laying on the ground in the grass and I just happened to notice and look better... I tried to move it but it was deep in the ground, I got my pick and 10 mins later got this sucker out .. the entire piece is almost perfectly square and is almost full Agate but has some white geodesic quartz formations on just one side.. i need to clean it up but man I am absolutely stoked as it's my first big find I did on my own.

Howdy Dan ! I would love to hear Yu tell us again about how gold, finds it way into slate , up on the bank , as apposed to staying down in the bottom of the Fraser ! Cliff Kelly from Tucson, Az

I find it interesting that the spring rush is ongoing even in July. Frasier River hydrology would be interesting, at least to me- it seems like it also governs how you can find such nifty minerals.
@aaron6806Ай бұрын
Plenty of huge mountains full of snow and ice along the upper Fraser. Water doesn't rise until temps get high enough to melt high-elevation snowpack. This year we also had rain through to late spring, so early summer there was a lot of water everywhere. Then everything caught on fire, so that was fun.
@susanfender307Ай бұрын
@@aaron6806 woof. That's really different from my neck of the woods- most of the rivers we have around here have a constant flow from direct aquifer discharge (springs). The largest river near me is basically an estuary for most of it's distance and flows north (St. Johns River in Florida). I just find it amazing how complex ya'll's area is for geology.
@jacksonforman9560Ай бұрын
you should collect all of the little gold you get along with whatever else is left in the pan for real small stuff and after a while you could clean it all up and get a nice amount of flower gold

@Dan Hurd geo lesson... look at the video at about 5 minutes left... Notice the water current when you were talking about geology... The Pickerton inflow current is showing spectacularly going the OPPOSITE as water current from the river rushes by
@danayneal4409Ай бұрын
That's an eddy. It's quite normal. The current flows around an obstacle, like a rock or the river bank, and the water circles back around to fill the space behind the obstacle.

I appreciate that you took the time to replant the greenery you have to move. You didn't have to tell us it replant it. So big respect for your honesty. I was hoping to ask, you say you've been skunked a few times at Pickerton. Roughly what percent of the claim would you say you have worked? Just wondering how much ground is left unexplored
@wendywobbles1Ай бұрын
I really look forward to your channel, Blimey it's Sept 20th now lol
@GomorraghАй бұрын
looking at the flow of the river at the side of you, when the water is higher up the bank the whole flow will change, and like the eddies at the side of you, they may move further up the bank, and that might be why youre expecting the pickers in one place but theyre not appearing in the right direction to your mind
@rogergriffin9893Ай бұрын
I'm glad you found some pickers. I was worried that the claim jumpers got them.

Geology lesson to discuss. The term heavy vs density. We use these terms like they are interchangeable but scientifically are they? A good discussion on density would be an interesting.
@joshredding9588Ай бұрын
GLOTD….take us up to where the snow melt starts, to show the source of why the Fraser River water levels rise and fall 60ft every year. Would be interesting
@wigi49Ай бұрын
Here's a GLOTD idea: I am always impressed that seemingly large pieces of gold get into amazingly tight spaces. How do large pieces of gold get below bedrock (like Pickerton slate) that has only minute cracks in it, that I assume have not moved significantly since they first fractured. It would seem that new, very tight fractures would only allow very small gold to fit between the cracks.
@drpikegeologistАй бұрын
Just off your left shoulder while panning there is a serious boil-out... probably the mechanism for the sporadic gold placement there. Boil-outs can lift plenty of gold from lower than where you are on the bank. I see boil-outs on lots of videos you do on the Fraser. That would be a good placer geology lesson.

Dan, nice persistence with continuing until you have success. I'd like to hear more about the geology of the rock formation that you were working the crevasses from. I noticed that the "country rock" looked banded. Is it a metamorphosed shale (slate)? Thanks in advance for considering discussing the local geology you were working in.

Dan if you have not yet do a lesson on how to pick your gold pans and the different graders. I have panned in California at Sutter's mill and found - and that i some "dust" but that is a state park and panned to death. But I do travel the US now I am retired that this looks like something I could do to relax when I park the coach for the day. Who knows it might even make me enough for a gallon of petrol in my coach would get me 5 miles down the road (those 42 footers are really hungry for fuel)
