Vivek... as usual you are spot on. One slight error: Galileo was under house arrest, but was permitted to travel for medical reasons and did from time to time as he got older. He was NOT put to death for his scientific assertions, but he was arrested and silenced. I hope that some day you are our president.

Galileo published "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems", the book that got him in trouble, in 1632. It was commissioned by the pope (who was an admirer of Galileo) to compare the dominant Geocentric theory against Copernican theory in a neutral manner. The reason the church got pissed off at him wasn't that he was discussing Copernican (heliocentric) theory. They got pissed off because Galileo chose the character "Simplicio" or "Simpleton" to represent the position of the people that were paying him to write it and straw manned the position instead of steel manning both sides like he was hired to do. There were 2 orbit models that were taken seriously by the cranks, crackpots, and characters that made up astronomers in this period of time. The first was The Tychonian Model put forth in 1583 (49 years before Galileo published) by Tycho Brahe (1546-1601). This model placed the earth at the center of the solar system, with the sun orbiting the earth and remaining planets orbiting the sun. The second model was the Elliptical Orbit Model proposed by Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) in his book published in 1609 "Astronomia Nova" (23 years before Galileo published). Brahe's model had the advantage of meshing with the common sense of the age that the earth was unmoving, and Kepler's model had the advantage of being right. This is not to say that Galileo wasn't considering heliocentrism in the early 1600s, he was. It's that by the time of publishing "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" Galileo's model was outdated before he ever put pen to paper. He was so far behind the curve that the developers of the dominant theories had already died, and a second generation of theorists were arguing about who was right. TLDR: The history that is being recited here is an Atheist fan fiction selected to make the catholic church look bad (as if you need to make up lies to do that) and completely overlooks Galileo's actual contributions in his later life. His work "Two New Sciences" would be foundational to the development of Newtonian Physics and solid mechanics. Galileo's astronomical work was outdated and wrong before he even started writing his book on the subject. The only reason most people remember him is because he pissed off the church. No one remembers his actual contributions that advanced science.

what he was rejecting was not settled science but age old dogma - most of it religious. The scientific method was in its infancy back then. The idea that we are the center of the universe fits very well into a belief system that we are created by a deity and are super important.

Galileo wasn't silenced for teaching that the Earth isn't the center of our solar system or of the universe. He was kept from teaching his idea the way he was because you can't just go around teaching something you believe without the proper process. His idea could have been wrong, which is why he had to do this a certain way.

Vivek, this isn't true. Galileo didn't simply "reject settled science". His reasoning was actually wrong even if his conclusion was right. And his colleagues pointed out he needed to be more rigorous in his reasoning before presenting this at the university as fact. So instead of doing that, Galileo threw a hissy fit, started insulting his employer, and received consequences.
