This movie was one of Ann’s biggest hits. She was enormously popular in the early 1930’s and then dropped out of sight to marry and support her conductor husband’s career. She was never interested in promoting herself or keeping her name alive in her later years, the way Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn did, so she’s not as remembered now, but she was just as talented as those ladies, in a more understated way.

Much more than most actors, Ann Harding looks like she's speaking the words that she's thinking, rather than delivering lines. She radiates intelligence.

Ann Harding is one of my favorite actresses. She usually plays , strong,independent women who find love,loose it, then find a true soul mate. Her performance here is outstanding and she wears some beautiful Art Deco outfits throughout the film.

Ann Harding was enigmatic. Her words weren't words they were more like whispering sighs. I was always drawn to her early films.🕊️

One of the earliest from then-20th Century. Ann Harding always looked nice. Darryl F Zanuck had jumped ship at Warners and, with some New York money, started the studio, with United Artists distributing. Zanuck had made quality films at Warners, but he really wanted a ready-made distribution system and hundreds of big theatres that would show his movies. He found it a year or so later, merging with bankrupt Fox Film and creating 20th Century-Fox (1935-2020).

Marvellous pathos in a film that marks cinema's break from the melodrama of silent movies. I must add that I have never seen a more beautiful Ann Harding. Some of her close-ups transfixed me.

This early Darryl Zanuck production (1933) paved the road to many nominations and three beautiful Oscar wins (Gentleman's Agreement, All About Eve). A solid writing (Gilbert Emery, Sam Mintz) and the direction of famed Gregory la Cava (My Man Godfrey) gave the tranquil, but radiant Ann Harding the chance to put a true dramatic spark in the somewhat ambiguous story. Also, gave a most natural child actor (Dickie Moore) many scenes to act and shine alongside the principals. I found the 1938 beautifully directed remake, "Always Goodbye" (Sidney Lanfield) elevated the story to superior by the brilliance of Barbara Stanwyck and Herbert Marshall. Thank you! 🤩🤗💃

Born Dorothy Walton Gatley, Ann Harding changed her name because her father, a high-ranking Army officer, disapproved of her career choice. The way she 'chats' with the boy, like when she told him the Elephant tale, is so natural. She just didn't survive being typecast in the 30s, so her acting slowed to a trickle, or she probably could have been as successful as the other tops stars in the 40s and beyond. Great post-TY!

The more you watch him the more you will realise how Big he was, and how justifiably so. Start 28:02 with 24 Hours ( 1931 w/ Kay Francis and Miriam Hopkins) and then " If I Were Free", 1933 w/ Irene Dunne. Then I think you will cherish his skill. And that of all the other cast members with her ! Ann Harding is still a favorite in Detroit with some who know about her stage company time there with Jessie Bonestelle.

Ann’s father was a well known Army general who disapproved of Ann’s choice of an acting career. She took a stage name to avoid bringing dishonor to her father, although her father ultimately was proud of Ann’s career accomplishments.

There isn't any gallantry to be seen anywhere in this awful fairy tale of the spoiled rich and self-indulgent. - -
@keoniili
@keoniili 6 ай бұрын
Not quite. This was a tale of the self-indulgent, spoiled fiancée pitted against the once-poor, self-made woman. The former was quickly dispatched and gallantry was acheived with sound, moral advice from a down-and-out friend. Hardly a fairy tale of the rich.
