I've been thinking, and I'm pretty sure this is my favorite two-parter. I always just thought it was Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead, but Capaldi just... he totally kills it as THE Doctor in these episodes. He is like a distillation of what The Doctor both is, should be, and could be, all at once. And not all at the same time! Such an iconic portrayal.

Before we entered into this new era, I would sometimes talk at schools about various subjects, because I have friends who are teachers and as someone who is dying they thought maybe I could help them with certain questions. But that wasn't the only thing I would talk about, and I have used parts of the monolouge as a part of my presentation when tackeling other subjects. Because I feel while there might are better written speeches about the subject. I believe that when rewritten for an audience of teens who have a spesific mentality about certain things. I don't want to go into detail in fear of spoiling for Paula in case she read comments, I've seen how the wheels really turn in their heads hearing it be described in a way they never have considered. I just can't wait to watch Paula reacting to Capaldi's greatest singular monolouge scene as the Doctor. Heaven sent for very personal reasons is for me and always will be the GOAT. Every other Doctor is great in their own way, but even though I will often watch certain scenes and try to imagine how the other Doctors would have delivered. I can usually see them doing it, but the next episodes monolouge and Heaven sent, while I believe they would be able to preform it, the gravitas mixed with his lighter persona change from series 8 to series 9 is pure perfection. Moffat wasn't a flawless showrunner but I do believe he truly did understand Doctor Who in the way you described Peter's preformance, even if he didn't always manage to get it right and sometimes ended up with episodes you easily skip on rewatch.
@adamcarlson21923 жыл бұрын
@@dcworld4349 There are definitely some that I skip, but if pressed I can always find something great about Capaldi in them, at the very least. He really came into the character in series 9 and seeing all of the little touches of his own personality in The Doctor was beautiful, especially with knowing that he was literally a Doctor Who superfan since practically the beginning. Moffat may have made his mistakes, but that casting was sublime.

Writer Peter Harness had quite a lot of baggage to deal with going into this episode. Not only was this following up on what was universally agreed to be the weakest aspect of "Day of the Doctor", but there's also the fact that a year prior he had squatted over the series and farted out "Kill the Moon". Thankfully, Harness manages to make up for his previous episode's shortcoming and delivers a fairly strong and engaging opening to this tense politically-charged thriller. It's not without its faults, UNIT are once again completely inept in this episode, with the scene in front of the church being the most egregious case of this. I'd get if one of the soldiers fell for the Zygons' trick, or even a few of them, but every single one of them? These are supposed to be elite trained soldiers, how can they all fall victim to the same trick? On the subject of the Zygons, they're not really that effective a threat here, as the paranoia-inducing ability to copy other people never feels like its been taken full advantage of, and the random grab bag of new superpowers they've gained here only serves to make them feel less well defined and more vague. It's the same problem the Cybermen had in "Nightmare in Silver", when there's no apparent limitations to their abilities, it kind of undercuts the stakes. Aside from these issues, "The Zygon Invasion" is a bloody good and highly exhilarating adventure. The James Bond style globe trotting gives the story a big epic scale, while the political subtext relating to immigration and the fear of terrorist attacks is highly relevant and compelling. The story is very well directed, with loads of tilted camera angles that give the story a very off-kilter and tense feel. Capaldi is excellent as always, with his interactions with the UNIT staff giving a great demonstration of the clash between his pacifist scientific viewpoint and their more aggressive military perspective that makes this feel like a real throwback to the Jon Pertwee era (lovely to see a pseudo Thick of It reunion with Rebecca Front's guest appearance), while his interactions with Osgood are really lovely and endearing. And of course, the big reveal of Clara actually being a Zygon imposter is fantastic, it's a genuinely unexpected moment, yet it never feels unearned thanks to all the nice subtle bits of foreshadowing seeded throughout the script. Also, kudos to Jenna Coleman, who does cold understated evil alarmingly well. Hollywood, if you ever need someone to play a cold murderous villainess, look no further. So yet another solid episode for series 9, an engaging and thrilling set up for what is set to be an epic conclusion. Next week cannot come soon enough, it is going to be spectacular
@kwanarchive3 жыл бұрын
They Zygons were the perfect tie back to the classic series, given that it was a 50th anniversary special. Whoever thought the Zygons were the weakest part of the Day of the Doctor doesn't know what they're talking about. The Zygon's only previous appearance was in one Tom Baker episode, who also appears in Day of the Doctor. Then, the Time War destroying their planet being made the reason why they tried to invade Earth back in Tom Baker's episode AND Day of the Doctor is a brilliant retcon. I daresay it even gave the original Zygon story more importance than just "alien race tries to invade Earth for reasons". THEN they upped it even more by tieing in the Zygon's method to invade Earth with everything about the Doctor saving Gallifrey. The Doctor got part of the idea of freezing Gallifrey from the Zygon's plans of invading through a painting. The parallel with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart preparing to destroy all of London just to stop the Zygons, and the Doctor destroying all of Gallifrey to save the universe. The Time War gave him impetus to stop Kate from doing the same, and in Doctor Who fashion, ended up pushing him to also stop his destruction of Gallifrey. Basically, the Zygon story is a brilliant bit of writing, serving as a parallel to one of the Doctor's greatest challenges, all at the same time that it was actually happening. Anyone who doesn't get that doesn't understand Doctor Who, and doesn't understand great writing.

Yes I know I'm late, shush. Funny you mentioning your problems with Clara as a character at this point. I remember being tired of her, and thinking she should have moved on already. Part of the problem with that is Moffat gave her a storyline (as he did with all the companions), and once that storyline was finished, she became kinda boring. It's easy to get fatigued by the characters in the show, and feel like they've outstayed their welcome. Clara was, for me, one of those. And genuinely, when she finally did depart, it felt like a relief. No disrespect to Jenna Coleman, she did a great job with what she had, though I do think she shouldn't have renewed her contract at the end of the last season. The Doctors need to change their companions from time to time. It helps them grow, keeps the show fresh. Two seasons is generally about right, I think, especially with the fast-paced big-stakes nature of the current format.
