Something I guess I kinda noticed is that, even though the Doctor did have therapy, he always can’t help but fall into his old habit of stuffing down his feelings. Sure 15 is a lot more outward with his emotions, but the second it gets too much, he’s just like the other ones and shuts down those feelings until he is forced to process them. Poor Doctor, always losing the ones he loves.

This was more of a Bridgerton story reference than an Austen one (I don't think Austen would ever get over Clara) mainly because of how steamy it got, at least as much as Doctor Who can allow, lol. But also on Bridgerton they use classical renditions of modern songs a lot so the Bad Guy and Poker Face scenes were a parody of that and I loved it. They timed this episode very well, lol. I like Rogue a lot. Tbh I always found Captain Jack's constant flirting a bit obnoxious although I accepted it as part of his character, but I think this issue got worse in his last few cameos since it became his entire character and he no longer felt like someone who went through what happened in Torchwood. Rogue is much more introverted and I like that he comes across as a bit socially awkward, enough that he seems to have created the Rogue persona like an absolute nerd. It's so Mr. Darcy.

This was a great episode. Obviously the big talking point is the romance, but I also really like the aliens, the idea of a species that 'cosplays' on this macro scale is super fascinating; I would absolutely be into them coming back as a recurring foe, at least a couple times. Would be a fun way to do historical episodes. And yeah, Rogue is great. I guess I'm biased, because right now I feel like the mystery of what his deal is is such a big part of his appeal, and I'm worried once we get some of those answers he'll be less interesting. Was this what it was like for River Song fans when she was introduced? I got into the show right around when people found out her backstory, so I never really got to experience that "River mystery box" discourse. Anyway, I'm on board for more Rogue. Please make him cool, Russel!

The doctor often is portrayed as an asexual amorphous blob but since Paul Mcgann both in the movie and in Big Finish the doctor has been shown to be capable of romantic relationships depending on the regeneration. Man, woman or alien all that matters is the chemistry. This Doctor had way more chemistry with Rogue than Jodie’s Doctor with Yaz. I feel Russell T Davies might have done this because after Chris Chibnal he was like “okay now I’ll do a same sex Doctor romance actually well.”
@dobr4481
@dobr4481 3 ай бұрын
Massive mistake to introduce 'romantic' relationships into The Doctor's universe. The more 'human' he ( or she ) becomes the less like The Doctor he becomes until eventually the character becomes no different from the humans he/she interacts with. One of the joys of the show I think is the gentleness & humanity of the character & for the same reason the introduction of weapons & overt violence ( Tom Baker snapping a neck in 'The Seeds Of Doom' for example ) was a terrible idea. The homophobes & reactionaries will take issue with gay themes regardless, that isn't & shouldn't be the issue, the issue ought to be 'should the Doctor be behaving as humans behave' & the answer is 'no, absolutely not' in my opinion. The Doctor ought to be showing us the folly of humankind, to do that the character needs to be apart from it.
@g1xrider13
@g1xrider13 3 ай бұрын
@@dobr4481 the Doctor is an alien, that has always been the case but showing more “humanity” I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing. From the start the Doctor was traveling with his grand daughter so the implication was that the doctor had loved and had children at some point. While the show has never delved into those details, it has explored the Doctor’s pain and grief of loss of family and loved ones not just due to the Time War but probably also because of whatever losses he suffered before an unearthly child. This implies a lack of openness to romantic love might just be related to long standing grief and heartbreak from the past not an alien personality quirk of being “above” all that. The timeless child lore makes things more complicated but different regenerations have shown varying emotional capacities and the previous Tennant regeneration showed a renewed emotional openness to expressing love to those around him. This current regeneration is continuing that trend that after losing everything and everyone even losing their own sense of self identity over their own past being unknown, love of all kinds is worth having.
@dobr4481
@dobr4481 3 ай бұрын
@@g1xrider13 The thing is I don't think viewers have ever been expected to be interested in the Doctor's 'private life', it's never been that type of show, so why introduce it in the first place? Once you do introduce it, in this case having the Doctor passionately kiss a man, where does it lead? My guess is it will not lead anywhere, so it was just done for effect, to exploit rather than explore a gay relationship. Introducing sex is a dead end in other words, there's nowhere for it to go, this applies to fiction or real life, sex always gets in the way of what it means to be a person ( or Time Lord ).
@g1xrider13
@g1xrider13 3 ай бұрын
@@dobr4481as far as where romantic relationships with the Doctor can go, well his marriage to River Song spanned over three seasons and many more regenerations if you include Big finish audio stories. Captain Jack Harkness throughout his tenure showed an almost darker or more emotional reflection of the Doctor's character, an immortal destined to outlive everyone he knows and loves. But Jack was willing to love others despite the pain of loss he would inevitably experience in contrast to David Tennant's first doctor who always reiterated an unwillingness to sustain relationships until the person died of old age instead preferring to just leave them. In Torchwood we saw a wide variety of different kinds of romantic relationships that led to varying interesting plot lines with Jack including having children and grandchildren, pretending to be his own son decades later and having a lost love totally freak out and purse a crazy conspiratorial crusade in reaction to his immortality. So yeah if the story can be good why not pursue it.

I've had the feeling for a while that RTD is essentially repeating his first season with Christopher Ecclestone, though with Slitheen 2 parter skipped and one change in order. 1. Domestic drama focusing on companion (Rose/Ruby Road) 2. Camp space adventure (End of the World/Space Babies) 3. Historical with dimension-hopping villain and famous side character (Unquiet Dead/Devil's Chord) 4. Trapped in one location, companion fake-out death (Dalek/Boom) 5. Doctor/Companion action leads to mess-up of time (Father's Day/73 Yards) 6. Comment on modern media/communication (The Long Game/Dot and Bubble) 7. Historical with 'rogue'ish character (Empty Child-Doctor Dances/Rogue) And we're heading to a two part finale portentially wrapping up hints about Bad Wolf....I mean Ruby....Susan Twist....Mrs Flood.....whatever...

Chekov's earring! Boy, did the Doctor and Rogue have chemistry, right? You could definitely believe that they just fell for each other, and why not? I'm pretty much entirely cis-het (and borderline a) or whatever the proper term is, but DAMN, they were indeed hot. It felt a bit like reading a good shoujo manga. WRT Jodie...I think she, even more than 12, was SOOOO wound up and conflicted and scared and scarred and emotionally guarded after everything the Doctor has/had been through, so it was impossible for her to let herself be vulnerable in that way again. It took the return of 10/14 and Donna (and bigeneration) to let the Doctor get some kind of relief and release and finally be able to have a bit of joy again. Hopefully it won't be fleeting.

The Kylie callback was great. This was definitely a Captain Jack episode just as a new character, and the writers knocked this episode out of the park. But they're Loki writers so that was to be expected as that show was epic and fun. I do love that this follows the Doctor's first heartbreak episode. So, he gets to go have a Bridgerton episode and gay romance, but it still ends sad because this is DW and RTD. And we get all the sad too with only 2 episodes left. I just hope they aren't just cram sessions of "Hey, remember all those threads we laid out? Well, here they all are right in your face with no time to breathe because we've only got 1 hour and 15 minutes to wrap them all up." Also, how was this the first episode I finally clocked that Millie is really short? Shouldn't we have figured that out by now? Also, I'm actually glad to watch recaps with Paula because she's one of the few people who figure things out faster than I do. Not to mention she immediately did that alien neck crack way too perfectly. We are sure that's Paula, right? ;)

Every Dr so far has had these moments. This series hasn't and i'm having trouble believing the friendship between them, it's just not jelling for me.. yet.

Yeah, that's why the whole 'she's my best friend' line felt off to me. I mean, yes that was the Doctor signalling to Rogue that he was single and not in a non-platonic relationship with Ruby, but it still felt...unearned? Don't get me wrong, I like Ruby and I like her with the Doctor, I just feel like I barely know anything about their connection TO EACH OTHER and that's a week before the finale.

To be honest, I could see that kiss coming since they were talking about this episode months ago. Since it was expected by me, I was interested in the set up leading to it. Classic rom-com! Good banter, building tension.I was concerned it would be rushed, but they hit all the right spots. Besides that, I've been an Indira Varma fan for decades, and almost every time she gets killed, is the villain, or both. At least she got the dying out of the way early and still was in it!

A couple of things I've posted elsewhere. The Tardis has a jukebox, couldve been a good reversal to carry on with the Kylie. Also the choreographer for the episode was the Bridgerton choreographer, also (not in this video but) there was a very captain Jack salute right at the end.

ive always been curious since captain jack 1st appeared in a Moffat episode if he was a Moffat creation or RTD came up with him and suggested him be inserted in that story. So in the same way here this is one of the few episodes in this criminally short season that wasnt written by RTD so was Rogue an RTD creation or the writters of this story? I feel like they left it open for future writters to allow us to go find him again..... and he was a great character. But so wasnt Jenny and they had that little end scene to let us know she lived and we never revisited her. but yea i still think the big problem with jodis season is making her so closed off. she didnt get many grand speeches or emotional moments. though theres still the camp that things the doctor should be asexual and there should be no romance plots at all regardless of genders. i hope Ncuti sticks around for at least 4 seasons if not 5. also hope we return to at minimum 10 episodes 8 is just crazy short. ive seen some people say they dont really feel too connected to ruby though we did get 73 yards which is all about ruby. but something i felt a lot in jodis seasons when you have episodic tv like this you need to introduce guest characters, villain of the week, the plot and the conclusion and have all that take place in 40 minutes with very little time for our main characters to get fleshed out compared to long form story telling like we could have had with flux. flux was also way too short. it could have been chibnals greatest but instead we kept introducing more stuff when we were running out of time to wrap up the story in any satisfying way. but jodi having 3 companions and the episodes still being stand alone meant you had even less time split among the whole cast of characters to flesh anyone out. Yaz always felt like a 4th wheel so then when they decided to make her more important the writing seemed like it was forcing her development more to compensate for the lack of it in her 1st season.

This was so amazing, and what a time to stream it during pride month. As someone who has been critical of BBC and the RTD era for how crass and careless they have been in the past with representing Gay bi and other minority groups as spectacles, including some of RTD's earlier works, I am so overjoyed with the care that was given here. BBC used to have a goal to unabashedly portray the representation as in your face to challenge the norm at the cost of the demographics realism or humanity. I remember bailing on torchwood because what they tried to represent as bisexual representation in the opening episode turned into sexual assault and I felt so grossed out I could never give the show a chance afterword. It overly simplified representation into base sexual carnal desires that were so superficial that they had no substance to justify a joyful relationship. But this was amazing. It felt so natural, the chemistry was there, the affection, closeness, the dialogue, the equality to make it feel as real and carefully crafted as any other relationship had been in past episodes. This may be the first non cis romantic pairing I felt was genuine from this universe of Doctor who. And to have the Doctor be the one who embodied that role.... I died.

I *knew* you'd love this one, gals! As a young at heart boomer, who's been around since the very start of Who (just), this was my favourite ep of RTD2, just edging out Wild Blue Yonder. And yes, the chemistry was electric; even an old straight guy like me was sighing at it. My one concern is that Jonathan Groff is a pretty big deal on Broadway now, and they may have trouble getting a slot in his diary the way it's going. But surely he's got to come back...? Oh, and YES PLEASE to a reaction of BBC Pride & Prejudice. See if you can get access to the restored version, which looks bloody gorgeous.

By far the best episode of the series. I don’t know about you, but the series does feel like it’s not in the right order. This coming after the darkness of Dot & Bubble just feels kinda wrong. Maybe this should’ve been episode 2, after Space Babies. Also loved the obvious inspiration from Bridgerton. Even the covers. Paula, you gotta get on Bridgerton, I think you’d have such a blast. I will say the one complaint I have with this doctor is he doesn't come off as clever in solving problems. In fact alot of it people do it for him like rogue here or the beetles playing the last note in discord or him talking the A.I Dad into saving everyone in Boom. Just something I noticed in the writing that I don't really care for but the series been great besides that. Ruby got to be clever a couple of times like in 73 yards with her taking down the prime minister so maybe it on purpose and will lead to something later.
