One of my favorite Maddux stories is that it's near the end of the season and he was facing a hitter he expected to see in the postseason (I forget who, someone whose name I should remember tho). Anyway he lobs a slider over the middle of the plate hoping the hitter will clobber it, which they do. Then in the postseason, when Maddux faced this hitter he never once threw his slider and the hitter went 0-fer.
@TheEloheim2 жыл бұрын
Reminds me of stories on the Cardinals broadcasts about Pujols purposely exaggerating how fooled he was by a pitch early in the an bat just so he could sit on it later in the sequence/game. Might be a sort of urban legend but I wouldn't put it past him, either.
@brad42662 жыл бұрын
It was Jeff Bagwell.
@nedcassley51692 жыл бұрын
George Will told a version of that story but it was an inside fastball which Bagwell hit out of the park in an 8-0 game. None of it is believable, as told. Supposedly Bagwell kept looking for another inside fastball [why?]. What is the thinking? "Maddux lost a shutout on this pitch and is therefore going to throw it again in a postseason game." I call B.S.
@nedcassley51692 жыл бұрын
I think Maddux did something like this but it would be so the hitter would not expect the same pitch in the same location. And in the postseason, he threw it better. I don't believe he gave up a HR in a shutout on purpose.
@paulbbryan2 жыл бұрын
That game was an all-timer. This postseason has been absolutely ludicrous. I became a fan in '93 as a kid and saw in '08 what a win does for this city. I'm excited for kids to be drawn to baseball by this insane series. I'm pulling for my Phillies so people will be talking about this roster forever.

2:51 I don't think the issue is whether it's in the glove or not, it's when the glove is touching his body. The glove makes contact with the body too late. I think that angle is very deceiving because it looks like the glove is touching the whole time, but from a previous angle it's doesn't seem to and for me once the glove starts crumpling it's touching

This is what people who say, "baseball's boring," don't get about the sport. There's the game -- the hits, home runs, strikeouts, great plays. And then there's the game WITHIN the game. Pitch selection, gamesmanship, moving in 20 feet to save the run -- all of it. These kind of nuanced details and mental gymnastics is what makes baseball so great.

As for the rule confusion I would guess that it is entering the glove at first because it is a force play where the base is involved. On a steal at second it has to be a tag so I would have to imagine it would have to be in the glove because you can't tag a player without the ball being in the glove.

So much going on. On the final grounder to third it was a good thing that the 3rd baseman didn't decide to try and tag the runner coming from 2nd. If he had decided to do that and the runner got in to a run down then most likely the runner from 3rd would have scored before the runner got tagged and the run would have counted since it wasn't a force! Crazy. Great presence of mind by the 3rd baseman to ignore the runner coming from 2nd and just throw to first for the final out.
