Thank you for the shoutout Harvey, loved this breakdown on jumps and how we have to be mindful of the gaming systems that are already placed so we can craft one suited to the game engine. Gracias Harvey, desde Puerto Rico!

Man, I REALLY liked this one! Hardly anyone talks about animation metrics, yet it’s one of the most crucial factors that shape us as gameplay animators. I actually have a question for you. In your long career, how often have you worked on a project where animation metrics shaped the world? I’m pretty sure it’s rare for this to apply to an entire game, even for animation-heavy titles like TLOU. But how many times, for example, has your director told you or your team something like: "Make a wall jump as fast or as far as you want; just focus on making it look cool," and then the environment (wall heights, ledges, etc.) gets adjusted to fit that animation decision?

Good question Alex. It really depends on a bunch of different variables such as how big is the studio, how much freedom the animation department has, etc. But in every project I’ve been, we always have a point where designers don’t know exactly how things should work as it’s the mechanic is very animation dependent so they let animation prototype to see how it feels and we can decide after the fact the design and metrics of the game. Animation can be used as a design tool. Nintendo does this all the time. And it’s so much fun to work this way.

Super nice to see animators from around the world uniting. You are starting a great journey, animation hard but it’s worth it if you stick to it. Thanks a lot for watching and glad you found the video helpful.

totally agreed, matrics are huge in the game animation. imagine making changes to a regular "VAULT ON" animation to something like vaulting on 2 metre object .

Yeah Arpan, the more you animate in games the more you appreciate solid metrics.

Thanks Rex, I realized most people that want to get in to games are not familiar with the concept of metrics, specially for animators.
