I think AI might make people realize that art is about the human connection. AI can't capture a feeling, it can only mimic someone who did. In the future we're probably gonna see tons of movies, games, and TV shows with AI in them, but the ones made by the skilled artists will stand out above the rest.

Yeah Pingas, just like watching movies from the early 2000's with really bad VFX, Star Wars specifically doesn't hold up...I reckon as you mentioned we will look back at this time and go "What where we thinking?!"

From my animator's point of view, the best way to use AI is only as a quality-of-life tool, not a crucial decision tool. AI may help with rigging and other technical stuff which is needed but...arduous (?) I would say. It would we awesome to optimize as well, in general, any stuff that is disturbing for the animator to let him 100% focus on animations. In my opinion, any tries to replace an animatorwithy an AI will fall because it's not a case of the industrial revolution where many basic stuff were totally replaced by machines. I would see AI rather as a quality of life changer.

Yeah Micahl...completely, this is why I think the future is bright and in due time we will have tools that will save us time so we can focus on the creative aspects only to truly innovate. Just like the 9 Old Men needed to hire in in-betweeners so they could focus on the storytelling poses and on the money shots...I think AI will serve a similar purpose in the future.

The problem will arise when a non-artist person starts doing work with the help of AGI, as commercial ad companies will prioritize quantity over quality to save money. Since these companies only care about the end result, they won't differentiate between work created manually or with AI." And lots of companies are doing fully ai generated ads. they are not hiring 3d artist and graphics designer.

@nikhilsolanki956 this is a possible scenario in a short time. Imagine that suddenly it will appear tons of non-artist content made, mostly by the AI. In this case, we will have tons of the same, low-quality content and the state where companies will need to make a better quality product to show something else than bugged trash on the market. What else? Skilled animators using AI can still be able to make better animations than casual ones.

All this generic AI is the same. Soft, uncanny, lack of any direction, doesn't have any dynamic also has this wet look to it and feels like everything is made of some jelly. My friend send me some AI generated stuff to the music and honestly it was bad because you could literally do the same thing but with real life footage downloaded from YT or any other site. AI will get better and better in terms of quality look but we all know that's now how things are made. My biggest problem with AI is that it intention is to cut people for profit of those who make all the money and CREATE NOTHING. Irony is that AI could easily replace CEO and other c-level people saving most money on their salaries and stupid decision.
@harveynewman

100% agree, I think when people at the C level start to get replaced with an AI they will finally stop focusing on profits and focus more on getting back to making original art and products. We will get there I believe. They are afraid, but at the moment is making a lot of money and therefore there's no problem.

I think AI can help with some technical details like rigging. But I don't like when people use AI instead of imagination. It just shows lack of respect to the audience and lack of respect to art itself (especially if the companies push employees to use AI, because "it's an industry standard now").

At first I thought the 'he' you were talking about was the lead Animator, cuz that's very often the experience as a professional. You show blocking, your lead approves and you're excited, but by the end your lead has given it so many notes and redirects (thru the normal process of a films evolution/director changing their minds) that you think they hate your shot and you feel beaten down. But that's totally normal and the longer you're in the industry you take it less and less personally

yerp John ,that always hurts at the start, but as you said is more a personal battle that you have to get better at and the longer you work the more numb you become to heavy animation feedback.It just needs to be good and productive feedback as I had some leads that gave me feedback that made the shot worst and they couldn't see it and there's nothing more vexing. :)

There are some cool ideas here, and I'm a fan of visual planning in general. For your plan and app of choice here, I feel like there's some real benefits to it. Not only could such a polished and themed planning space be inspiring and energizing, and kind of "keep your head in the game" with a more immersive experience - I think there is probably a "practice how you play" benefit, where having such a professional and organized planning space should lead to professionally planned and organized games. You know what I mean? Like, if everything is jotted out on a whiteboard in whoever's handwriting, then it's a bigger leap to turn that into a themed game. But if it's already laid out like a game UI or a game marketing website, then it's more like you're halfway there. (Well, I've used my two sports metaphors for the year. I hope it helped people 😂)

Yeah I understand completely. And we certainly hope so, in most of the successful games I worked in. There was always a sense of looking back to admire how things where structured so we can learn from on the next project. To me this is an incredibly satisfying way to visually see the work that we have done and the work that needs to be done and also as a visual guide for meetings. For example a lot of the time someone will say or ask for something we have done in the past. Given that it’s all under one roof we can pull it out and be like “ah I forgot about this and we have done more than we remembered” because is visual there a sense of exploration of “let me review that so I can learn from it” everyone feels great an we can keep moving forward with the feature. Much more motivation than looking at a block of text or graphs. I hope that makes sense.

Usually I enjoy your content, but every minute of this video feels like it was specifically designed to sell the sponsor. It wasn't real actionable advice about starting a studio, it was a walk through of a template in the sponsor app. You started the video talking about how important it was to pay attention to things other than just the game-making when starting a studio, but the entire video you go over things related to creating the game. If this channel is going to become just big sponsored ads disguised as industry advice, I don't think I'll be watching anymore.
@bc4198
@bc4198 8 күн бұрын
@@fray989 I think that's a bit hyperbolic, but I get the concern. I think if the video opened more concretely, with something like the summary at 18:09, that it would be stronger overall and would preempt the sponsored content concern. For example, "I'm going to show you the kind of visual planning tool we use now, that we wish we had when we got started. It helps us to... And I'm proud to say today's video is sponsored by the makers of our favorite visual planning tool, Milanote! Here we go!" For me, I wasn't quite sure where you were going with everything, but an intro like I mentioned would have given clear "learning objectives", and I would have plugged right along without any doubts.
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 8 күн бұрын
Hey Fray. I appreciate the concern and I appreciate you taking the time whoever the video is far from just showcasing the sponsored tool, is more about stating that this is a tool we use, we love and here’s why it’s essential when setting up your studio and it so happens that the makers of the software are actually sponsoring the video. Regardless of the sponsorship this video was already planned. We reached out to Milanote to see if they’d be interested to sponsor it and they said yes. In regard to the sponsorship, the reason why the sponsors are so important is so we can earn enough so we can have more time to create these videos. The amount of time and investment it takes to create them is quite high. I hope that clarifies things for you.

Hey , i really appreciate your youtube channel, you cleared up lot of my questions about pursuing animation. However, i have an important question . im still under 20 years old, as a kid i always dreamt of getting game characters to life and put countless hours e.g in games gmod etc, now that i have the very basic fundamentals of 3D and blender, including the principles of animations, i want to know if a gameplay animator rather use maya or blender in indie up to AAA studios..? Ive been really split up between maya or blender to start honing my animation skills, since i can get maya for 3 years completely free (student license). Also i found out that tutorials on game animations specifically are not alot at all, especially beginner ones that explain them.
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 16 күн бұрын
Hey IMG, thanks for the support and for the great comment. And that's a really fair question, especially at the start of your journey. Although Blender is a brilliant software, I recommend using Maya as your main animation software. The reason why is that 99.9% of the AA and AAA studios out there use Maya for their game pipelines. There are quite a few reasons why. So the faster you get used to Maya the easier it is for you to snap that job as one of the questions you will get is what is your main software when you are animating, not having to learn Maya is always a bit of a bonus for studios as you are already familiar. I made a video a while back explaining some of this; check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4PJZ6SBg559g8k In regards to tutorials for Gameplay Animators specifically, I did a few here in the channel, but I intend to release courses specifically for this as it's a question and need that comes up quite often. Can it autoclean to a certain point the data? eg. can it autoclean more or less the 90% of it? Or in a multi-charater scene with interaction can it make that impressive interaction cleaning that my jaw dropped when you mentioned it? I haven't tried Maya2025 yet. Do you believe that it is worth our time to invest on learning Cascadeur? because after all is an investment.. Or soon enough this tech will come to maya or Unreal animation?

Hey Alex, and yeah we dabbled with Mocap as well as it's another feature they revealed late last year and it's pretty good still need improvements. There's a lot of automated features but you have to pick and choose, we found that in the right circumstances it saves a bunch of time. Might be worth a try if you have spare moment as it's free to try. They have quite a few tutorials on their YT channel. I think it's worth you giving it a try for sure...it's free in comparison to Autodesk products for 30 days, so if you have a low month with lots of spare time then give it a try and see if it helps. I think is super handy for gameplay animations as it removes some of the repetitive work. Make sure you use the discounts if you decide to purchase for the best deals. ;) I'm not sure if this tech will ever come to Maya and Unreal, maybe unreal one day as engines are masters at physics but we are far away as they are focusing on the basics for now.

I have been working with Ragdoll systems for many years I still run the old Endorphin software from natural motion. and process the ragdoll simulation through reallusion iclone before sending it to Blender or Maya and there is also a free open sourced, Python 3 based ragdoll engine for the vestigial Poser . I also have and older version of Cascadeur (2023) before they started charging money for FBX export and added the ragdoll collission physics All of them use their own internal constraints system for things like hanging from moving helicopters etc however such constraints and even Rigid Ik solving can not be “exported” but only baked to FK in an FBX or USD/Alembic export back to your rendering 3DCC USD/Alembic is limited because you have no IK rig for further layered editing. So you need to employ the local constraint & collision physics system in your 3DCC for solid hand gripping or be using Live link with Maya but will have problems if you need to interact with a complex scene environments in maya that you cannot replicate inside Cascadeur. and this does not even address things like have a Character dressed in loose clothing Maya and needing his Ncloth or Xgen hair interacting with complex scene elements inside Maya that you cannot replicate anticipate in cascadeur My point here is that stand alone external, Character animation solutions with no useful render engines are sometime more work than creating the animating entirely inside your final rendering 3DCC .

Thanks, and agree that ragdoll systems are always complex, both in engine and DCC...but it really depends on the use case for the animation/task at hand. Lack of emotional impact is why so many movies and books fall flat. And writing it isn't exactly cut and dried. Here because I'm looking for the best MOCAP solution for capturing emotional nuance in facial expression without buying an iPhone or dropping 10K$ on a suit. I never considered it a factor for gaming, but I think you're spot on.

Couldn't agree more...and when it comes to mocap, for proper facial expressions is always wise to do an animation pass to really get that emotion to sell. Even when studios spend a ton of money getting full facial mocap, they still need an animation pass to make it more human, otherwise a lot get lost and becomes quite mechanic. If you don't want to invest lots of $$$ and know how to animate, I would say do the whole thing by hand, or use a cheap iPhone capture and then tweak it heavily for faster iteration. Thanks for watching and for the great comment

Keep strong pastel! I have quite a few videos that should help out in case you need it. And finding a personal mentor normally helps you get unstuck and see things from a different perspective.

@@harveynewman it`s been my dream and I dont want to give up on this.. I just dont have very supportive people around me. It is sometimes really heartbreaking when some friends don`t understand how important this is to me.. thank you! appreciate your encouragement!

Most welcome and that was me in my early days even my family turned on me and really thought this animation dream was going nowhere. But what’s interesting is, when they see it working and they see you winning they then become super proud of you and admiration becomes the word of the day. So keep going and prove them wrong. Thats what I set out to do. :) I hope this helps, it’s a wonderful career. Best of luck in your journey.
