The industry is still here and however bad things might be, there will always be a need for animators and the work they do, animation is far from being useless to me. What I'm saying in this video is that now that things are shaky in the industry, for the experienced professionals now it might be a good time to look at creating a side gig for themselves in order to relief the stress and instability of the games industry.

Human-made animation is always better than AI-made. But for some studios, speed and money matter more than the "soul" of animation. In my opinion, human-made animation will be like theatres in the age of films. They exist, they are good, but there are much fewer of them than before. And this is sad.

Just got back from the MDEV Conference last week. From talking to other devs, it seems there are still a lot of studios thriving, and continue to hire talent. I do like how people are starting their own indie studio and unionizing. It will set the standard for other studios if they are not willing to compete. Top talent will go somewhere else if studios are not flexible when it comes to remote work with better job security. Wish you well Harvey!

Started off as an animator for tv shows and saw that to be able to keep doing animation, I have to travel to different countries and tolerate contract work. I was also into extreme early retirement before FIRE was even coin. To keep things short, I think other building your own brand, as artists we need to think more about managing our finances and invest properly. The financial safety net will be able to tide over uncertain times like these or even provide options to say no to ridiculous working conditions.

So like... Try to hear me out on this. I went to school for VFX and animation and I was the only one in my school that could actually animate. I originally went to the school to learn compositing. Once they started teaching me animation I flew off the rails at how I could actually achieve it. After school I got a job at a startup company where it was just me and my boss. He let me go after a year because he couldn't make any more money and I had to figure out something else. With me being new I didn't have the experience to land another job. The job that I had previously did not really prepare me for the next job. I got nearly nothing out of it. So I took up a job that my friend had as a door-to-door salesman. I'm so depressed all the time now because I get cussed out every single day for saying hello at a door... A few months ago I decided to try and make a animated film because prior to school I was working for myself doing visual effects for a fetish community. I was actually really really popular in it. I stopped because I just wanted to move on from it. It was mainly the stability of it that I didn't really like. I had to always find models to work with and that meant that I had to rely on other people which was really hard. But after school and after I got the jobs and everything I found myself really missing that life. It was a lot of freedom and a lot of peace and the money was pretty good. I have animation now and a few months ago I decided to try and enter back into my community. I wrote a script and I executed it creating a short animated film about 5 minutes long. It was really nothing special because I was just trying to test to see if my community would like to see animations from me because that would make me more stable. So far they love what I've produced and they're looking forward to more. I guess my point is that due to the rise of technology and AI right now. A lot of things are going to start shifting. I was able to make that little 5 minute animation thanks to AI motion capture. It probably would have taken me three times as long if I didn't have it. I think artists need to start realizing that they have real power here. I am able to now make money indefinitely into the future because I took the leap. It's the most stable thing in my life. Even after I didn't post for over a year... My fans were still there waiting for me... I tried to live a normal life. I tried to go to school. I tried to enter studio. I tried to work the regular job. I got f***** over and it put me in a really bad spot... I went from being content with life to hating life. Now I'm trying to get back to where I was but with animation this time. Animation gives me the ability to not stop anymore.

Oh...! This is such an important topic! The way a person or a team manages their tasks is what defines how your project will run and how your specialists will perform. Briefly speaking, it defines almost all about your productivity, comfort, and stress levels. Understanding why you/your team absolutely need a managing system is crucial because if there is no proper management all will come to a mess where nobody will see the order and each responsibility, and there will be so much place for frustration, procrastination, ineffectiveness and so on, so it can lead to disaster. In my career as a motion designer and animator, I worked in super organized places as well as in environments where all are doing something somehow and you will never find the ends especially when you are close to the deadline )))) So it is always better to have a plan, use the specialist's brains as a processing power train, and a task managing system as a rails. Super useful video, as always!

Isometric has become my favorite view in games now. It’s just so pleasing to look at. I wish we had more isometric views in games of different genres but it seems way more common in RPG type games but I think so many more genres and settings can benefit from that view as well. I’m seeing more games implement this recently but hopefully this trend continues to grow. Games could also maybe just put it in as an alternative camera view even if that’s not the games main viewpoint.

Hey Harvey! Im an indie dev and might buy your course since I want to take my animations to the next level, but I really want to understand the basics fully first. I record my own mocap and have been editing it for my game, it's going decent but there is one thing that im completely stuck on and hope you don't mind answering. My character in UE5 is always rotating left when I want it to go straight. The character goes in a straight line, the root motion goes in a straight line with a little wiggle between the start and the end, and my UE5 character goes in a straight line for anims that arent mine... Im completely stuck as to why there is rotation. Would you be able to broadly pinpoint issues that might cause this, possibly things that you have experienced that's related to this? Any help would be extremely appreciated, even if it's extremely vague. I have been at this for days... Oh and please let me know if your course covers similar problems. Your course would be an actual gold mine for me if it does :)

Hey Mini, thanks for asking. The course covers motion capture clean up in Maya at the moment, I intend to do a course in the future covering importing and working with animation and mocap in UE5, which is the second part of the problem for most indie devs. In regards to your problem is hard to say without having a look, one of the things we do have in the course is a community tab where studens can ask these type of questions and I can take more time to answer them. It sounds like there might be something wrong with either your exporter in Maya...meaning, sometimes depending on the rig, there might be a bone or information on a specific bone not being picked up that might cause unwanted results in UE. Alternatively, there might me a setting in UE5 from a previous project that might be clashing with the current project....as you can see it can be a number of things so hard to know without having a look.

So i guess what you're trying to say is, that using unreal is better for you, if you want to be hired as a game dev in a triple-A company, but if you want to just be an indie developer, its best to stay in stuff like unity.
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 26 күн бұрын
Yeah that's correct, Unity is a bit more indie friendly and easier to pick up, also better for smaller teams. This is why there's so many Indie games made with Unity. However Unreal is capable of the same, but it's a bit more complex to get started.
@fray989
@fray989 24 күн бұрын
@@harveynewman it's weird to me that people say Unity is more indie friendly. In Unity you have to build many tools from scratch or buy plugins for functionality that comes out of the box with Unreal. In my opinion Unreal is amazing for indies because you get fully featured tools for things like animation, behavior trees, skeletal editor, pathfinding and many more. And all of those systems work together already, able to share data and access variables. You need to build and integrate all of that yourself in Unity.
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 24 күн бұрын
@@fray989 Hey Frey, thanks for the comment, it's not so much the tooling that makes Unity more indie friendly is the ease in which you can pick it up and go to publishing. Specially when it comes to coding, Unreal is a far more complex engine in comparison, it''s an engine that requires quite a lot of experience in engineering for example in order to get it to do everything you need, specially if you are talking online games. But that is a bonus if you are working on a highly ambitious game as you have more tools at your disposal. But it is really a personal/studio choice at the end of the day....it depends on what type of developer and game you want to make and what the people involved are used to. Whatever engine allows you to be more creative and get the game you have in mind out the door at a high quality faster, that's the engine that is best for you. Having options is always a great thing. :)
