@@VideoGameAnimationStudy It’s maddening, especially in 3D fighting games. It’s practically a feature in the Tekken games, really.

@@Target00smile Character's body parts clipping through another character is pretty much unavoidable in any game, especially when it comes to combat-focused games. Clothes and fabrics, however, can be improved, but for Tekken in particular (which has character outfit customisation) it's often not worth the effort to prevent things clipping, since it's such a minor thing to worry about in a fighting game anyway lol
@Target00smile4 жыл бұрын
@@Reydriel Even 2015’s Tekken 7 has body parts clipping ad nauseam, highlighted more by the slowmo gimmick “inspired” by the OG Xbox’s _Kakuto Chojin._ Most modern 3D games haven't evolved beyond 1996’s Virtua Fighter 3 anim. effects; the latest Virtua Fighter game had clipping to a beautiful bare-minimum - released in 2006. It isn’t a trivial issue to me. It’s actually one of the many issues that’s keeping this genre ever so stale.

Streets of Rage 4 looks so good! Hot damn! Game feel has to be the most abstract of the fundamentals. There are no means of measuring it. You just have to feel it. Shigeru Miyamoto knew exactly what he did when most the time developing Super Mario 64 was about making Mario feel great to control on a simple flat plane.
@godmonster3334 жыл бұрын

Sometimes, games now focus on form over function. I found the latest Star Wars game (I keep forgetting what it's called) felt terrible to control because they focused on the graphics. Just like Dark Souls did years before. However, as you said with Spiderman PS4 and the Batman Arkham games, they have consistently great animations with great gameplay living together without sacrificing one over the other and also Nintendo make their games look decent to great (Most of the times great) in terms of animation, but they don't sacrifice gameplay. Also like you said at the start, feel is definitely the most important fundamental in animation design in games, at least in my opinion. Great video and I look forward to part 2!
@2und2sind44 жыл бұрын
I thought the Star Wars Character (also forgot what he's called) felt way more unresponsive than the player character in Dark Souls. In Dark Souls I always felt totally in control. Yeah, you couldn't cancel animations but I never felt that was to serve the form. It was to make you think about you moves and act deliberately. Star Wars on the other hand often felt inconsistent and therefore unpredictable. And I didn't feel responsible for a majority of my deaths.

The most subjective principal since explaining what make a character feel to good to control is entirely based how you want them to feel. Also the whole arguement of journalist saying "it makes you feel like ___". But how easy should the fantasy be accessed. Spider Man PS4 and the Arkham games are the perfect examples of games being a bit too easy to become these superheroes. Some would argue so easy that it makes you wonder if the game should be harder in order for you to actually feel like these heroes
@VideoGameAnimationStudy4 жыл бұрын
Like you say, it is all subjective I guess. I personally like the accessibility these games offer ☺️

To me, good feel also requires some skill. If the game is too easy to do, then it might get boring to do. Despite it looking good. Take swinging in spidey ps4. Yes, the animations are really fluid. But the illusuion breaks when somebody tells you "Hold forward and R2". Then you realize how automated it really is. Sound is also important. Have a weak sound, and it doesn't feel good to do. So using the assualt rifle in the first halo compared to 3. First halo feels deep and crunchy. 3 sounds tinny and weak. Probably because they used a stock sound effect. If you want to experience how important sound is, use halo 2 anniversary. Since you can easily switch between the original graphics and remade graphics by pressing select or tab, it's easier to compare. Most sounds in the remade graphics and sounds feels amazing. Can sound and feel better than the original, for the most part. Like the smg sounds like a gun, instead of someone dropping pebbles

The perception of the weight of a character can drastically change the way a player can be able to control a character. I remember reading that Samus’ suit in Super Metroid was around *200 pounds* and the momentum based gameplay really throws me off, even to this day. The fact that I constantly keep smashing Samus against any ceiling and ledge because of her weird floatiness always makes the game feel so disjointed for me. It’s such a shame because Super Metroid is such a great game but I find it so hard to replay it because it never *feels* right to me.
@VideoGameAnimationStudy4 жыл бұрын
That's fair enough, many players who didn't grow up with the first three games often find Super to be floaty and difficult to control. I think the thing that I'm beginning to find a tad annoying is that you need to hold run to move quicker. I'm glad they removed the run button in subsequent games.

Debate of hit box combat and pre canned animation is weird. Many choose pre canned animation because it is the easiest to make someone feel really good when you hit someone. On the other hand, it also makes the charcter feel really slidey since the charcter slides to the nearest enemy. Definitly the most accessible. On the other hand, it can be the most annoying when on different levels of terrain because the animation won't play out properly and you will be locked into that animation. Like in Shadow of War or AC Black Flag where the game struggles to know if you are hitting an enemy or countering. Leading to a lot of jank. Making it feel like it is the games fault I personally hate pre canned animation combat because when it works, it doesn't make you think on what to do and where you are positioned. It also feels really slidey since characters slide to the nearest enemy and not acting right when on strange terrain

Kirby Super Star was great at this too, and had a ton of different animations and sounds for different types of damage that all felt horrible, lol.
