I like how Dan is trying tell us that the Knight has personality but in reality it is a cold empty vessel of a shell
@samanthabrewster13145 жыл бұрын
i wouldn't call it empty. after all, it is a reject and so, therefore, has more personality than THK. Also mask maker says "To have a face is to focus, to feel, to exist." and i wouldn't call Ghost faceless really.
@rowanmiller70625 жыл бұрын
Actually, we don’t know that. You might assume that because of the White Lady’s dialogue, but she was presumably wrong once, so she could be wrong again. I personally believe that *no* Vessel was truly Hollow. THK was perhaps the closest, but still failed. Every single broken mask in the Abyss once held a life, one that should not have been so carelessly cast aside. Of course, I could be wrong on this.
@Notkikc5 жыл бұрын
to me hollow knight only failed on being hollow because of the pale king, we can see it got attached to it's creation, what made the hollow knight confused, it was supposed to be empty, with no emotion, but yet, someone was starting to care about it, and them it failed, on it's task of being empty.
@hiraethion5 жыл бұрын
Well...no. As everyone before me has elaborated, we learned that the discarded vessels are not empty, the one closest to pure being THK, and they too were corrupted by their love and devotion to the Pale King. Even the Broken Vessel/Lost Kin has enough sentience to reach out towards the Knight and bowed right before they fade. If anything, the Knight is as sentient as us, the player, because that's basically the point. We learned about the world, got interested in it, wanted to know more... And eventually, we came to love it, too.
@lred13835 жыл бұрын
@@hiraethion Which is why the ending where you replace the Hollow Knight is a bad ending. You are just as imperfect as him, the only difference is, there isn't going to be another vessel just wandering around that'll replace you. So you basically let the Radiance win.

the particles and smoke effects add SOO much to the experience! in the soul sanctum, the whole area as well as the entrances to them is full of floating particles of soul. you can feel the energy in the area. in certain areas of the fungal wastes, a soft yellow overlay is added, and its really simple but it really makes you feel like youre in a cave of noxious gas and spores. while in hotsprings, soul particles will emanate from the knight and follow them as they move through the water if crystal dashing above or through water, the water will splash around and behind the knight in the ancient basin and the abyss, void particles will float around the area the whole game is a masterpiece. i love team cherry

This game is gorgeous, along with the soundtrack. This may not be extremely related to animation, but do you ever consider including the artists' use of color palettes in the video? I only mention because it seemed like Hollow Knight had an intentional use of color overall and in certain areas. Enough so that it seemed as if each area carried a certain mood just based off the use of color alone. Excellent vid, btw!

That's definitely the case, while dark gray is the overall colour of the game each area has its own defined colour. The TV Tropes page lists them explicitly.

Hollow Knight is an interesting game. It's put under the _'metroidvania'_ genre, as that's what describes it quickest and easiest, but it's far beyond what the genre encompasses. I found it difficult to get into the first time, because I didn't get why the you couldn't see yourself on the map, and that the map didn't update where you were. That's because it's not your average metroidvania. It's so much more, draws in lots of different things from so many other genres of games, I'd be willing to call it an offshoot of a metroidvania. There's lots of complex things that surround that core open ended idea that make it something truly unique. What do you think?
@GoldStorm075 жыл бұрын
I'd say it shakes up the conventions of what a metroidvania can be as much as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night did back in the day. Hollow Knight is a trailblazer as well as the new gold standard for the genre.

As an animator myself hollow knight completely blows me away with its stunning gorgeous animation. Alot of the time I liked to just sit down to see my knight’s sleeping animation. It was just so charming in an otherwise very bleak game. My animation and my software are awful. I use scratch as my animation software which shackles me to a forced 30 fps which limits my animation. On top of that I am very bad at animation with alot of it coming of either stiff,lifeless or boring. Hollow knight and Megaman zero/ZX are the games that show me the beauty of animation. I’m making animations as a hobby but I’m very lazy so I barely work on any of them leaving many of my projects unfinished. But right now on my current project I am trying my best to finish it. I won’t release it publicly for privacy reasons but I wan’t you to know how much respect I have for these games and their animation and also the skill and time it takes to make these animations. Oh also make a MMZ/ZX video please. Those games have BEAUTIFUL animation please.

If I had a nickel for every KZbin channel with a Dan talking about video game animation that I've found through Hollow Knight I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's still weird that it happened twice.

Really enjoyed your breakdown :) Please make a video on Hornet once Silksong is released! Like yourself I'm very interested to see how her boss moveset is expanded upon once she takes centre stage as a playable character.

This game helped me cope after my granny died, I'll always be grateful I had Hollownest to get lost in at that time.

OH MY GOD THIS IS MARVELOUS! Is it just me or does the beauty of what people can do just make you feel like crying. This game is the best i have played in my entire life. Its only online i find a lot of people appreciative of this. People in my part of the world really don't value the beauty in art.

It's great to hear you say that, I definitely think video games can be considered as art!

@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Very true. I've always found video games to be a way to not only experience but also tell beautiful stories in much colorfully concepts.

Your breakdown was really interesting to watch. I especially enjoy the moments when you slow down the animation to show us the frames.

I have only recently picked up Hollowknight (probably through your little mentions of the game in other videos) and since starting to play the game, I started to notice the little qwirks of animation- but the extrapolated layers of background to foreground and everything in between simply blew me away! Thank you for your insight into video game animation, I eagerly look forward to the next video and will keep on the lookout of more animated nuance! ♥️

Awesome video! A friend of mine recommended Hollow Knight to me, which is what first introduced me to the game. One of the major things that really began to draw me into the game was its art style and animation. I loved your analysis! Keep up the great work.

One thing I'd like to do is make a game that has levels akin to traditional 2D platformer games like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog, has the emphasis of collecting things like Donkey Kong Country, and has a massive world map that plays like a Metroidvania game.
