Fun Fact: the word "apologist" actually had nothing to do with apologising for anything. It comes from the Greek word apologia, which is a legal term meaning "a formal defense of one's opinions or conduct". So definitely an accurate name for the channel even if you were to never apologise for any games - you are making a formal defense for your opinions 👍🏻

Honestly I feel like most of the problems with the tether could have been avoided by simply giving the player the ability to turn on an off the tether physics. With the physics off, the second character still follows around the player character in single player similar to Tails in Sonic 2, but doesn't pull at the player at all, nor does the player pull on them. At the press of a button, you can enable and disable those tether physics to make use of it when you want it without having to deal with it holding you back. Just imagine the new skill ceiling that would be created by giving the player that kind of power. That's the kind of thing I would love to see explored in a future game such as Mania 2.

I owned the rest of the series on Genesis and Game Gear, and could dig into them as much as I wanted. But I could only play Sonic CD and Chaotix on those rare occasions, maybe two or three times a year, when my parents would let me rent a Sega CD or 32X for a weekend. 44:56 I was also quite disappointed that Chaotix wasn't on Sonic Gems. It seemed for a while that Sega was bringing every Sonic game they ever made onto the GameCube or PS2. Advnture 1 & 2 were remade. The Mega Collection included all of the Genesis Sonic games and even threw in Flicky and Ristar. MC+ threw in 6 of the Game Gear Sonics. Gems was made to fill out the roster for the CD, Saturn, and the rest of the Game Gear, but somehow the old 32x was ignored. Every non-arcade Sonic game made up to that generation was available in Gen 6, with 2 exceptions. Sonic Pocket Adventure, which is basically a reworked Sonic 2, and Knuckles Chaotix. Even the arcade title Sonic Fighters made it into Gems. They sent out all of those Sonic games, all of the spinoffs, and even several non-Sonic Sega games, but they still wouldn't make room for Knuckles Chaotix. Out of nearly 40 games Chaotix was still kept off the list. That's just insulting.
@Mechasonicrocks Жыл бұрын
There’s clear evidence it was to be included, as a whole area of the museum is devoted to Chaotix artwork. The official reason given by Sega as to why the game was left out is stated as “emulation issues” (probably also why Sonic CD on Gems Collection uses the heavily inferior 1996 PC port).
@ThePlayerInBed Жыл бұрын
@@Mechasonicrocks Maybe it's just me, but that sounds like excuses honestly. Knuckles Chaotix was available on GameTap before that service shut down in 2015, so clearly it must have ran fine when it existed. Unless some really weird stuff happened when they tried to emulate it.
@Mechasonicrocks Жыл бұрын
@@ThePlayerInBed I agree, but the crucial aspect would be to find out when GameTap first added "Knuckles Chaotix" to their library of playable games and then compare that date to when Sega started development on Gems Collection. If Gems started development further back in the timeline, it's entirely possible Sega ran into some headaches trying to get Chaotix emulated correctly. This might also be why they chose the inferior 1996 Windows PC port of Sonic CD over the 1993 Mega CD/Sega CD original.
@ThePlayerInBed Жыл бұрын
@@Mechasonicrocks From what I've seen, Knuckles Chaotix was available on the service around 2007. 2 years after Gems Collection came out, but like you said, Gems Collections development could've been back even further. And if it wasn't, well a lot can change in only 2 years.
@Mechasonicrocks Жыл бұрын
@@ThePlayerInBed Exactly. Two years tech-wise is actually quite substantial because the software and console systems were in constant change and I wouldn't be surprised if the team behind Gems had issues with emulation. Remember, Gems was released on several different consoles in multiple regions...Which, depending on how far back they started work on Gems, may indeed have impacted their ability to emulate titles in a collection where most are sourced from add-ons (Sonic CD, Knuckles Chaotix) or consoles known for having hardware designs that caused issues regarding programming games (Sega Saturn, Sonic R). If I remember correctly, I think the team even ended up using the Windows PC port of Sonic R instead of the original Saturn version (I could be wrong on that one).

Man that's exactly how i feel about this game. I never played this as a kid (i was born in '99), and i knew it's existence but never really played it until recently, i always thought it was just a weird sega game that didn't even function properly, but something about it always made it so intriguing to me. I'm glad i played it because it's one of the most unique experiences i've ever had, the graphics, music, the theme of the levels, it all fits so well together in a way i just can't describe, the game feels more like a playground, just to have some fun, not exactly for any kind of challenge. I think the game would work way better if it didn't focus on being a sonic game, this game feels like it could work like a collect-a-thon, having collectables, objectives and npcs to interact, maybe connecting all the stages together and having a hub connecting them all instead of picking a stage. I dunno man i love this game so much, it's one of those experiences that only the genesis could provide.

For me, with my personal history with the game, it took on a sort of mythical quality. I actually had a 32X as a kid (mom got it on clearance at Blockbuster for $15) and I remember getting Chaotix at a Walmart, and the cartridge.. would just freeze up randomly. None of my other 32X games had that problem, and it turned out the game had corrosion on the contacts, so I returned it, and the copy I exchanged it for had the same issue... and when I returned that copy, they Walmart associate told me that the entire shipment had to be recalled, and that they weren't going to be getting any more 32X games at all. So, I had this childhood snapshot of the game permanently in my mind, almost like a "lost" Sonic game, and it wasn't until I started watching KZbin that I ever even saw gameplay of the game again. I hope one day it can get a modern rerelease in some compilation or another, if nothing else for its value as a part of Sonic's history

I’m so glad I found this channel. After November Chaotix, I made it a point to go through and replay each Sonic game I had access to while analyzing it through a “critical” lense. I looked at how the game taught its players, how they built up the mechanics, and the creative platforming that still holds up today. I love seeing the risks. I found myself smiling and laughing at stage hazards that “unfairly” stole my rings or killed me because I didn’t know what was coming. I just beat Sonic Mania and it gave me a whole new appreciation for how willing it was to return to the spirit of the Genesis era. I hope I get a chance to play Chaotix soon. I also need to get ahold of pretty much all the 3D titles that weren’t the Adventure games or Shadow. This channel makes me want to delve in to all the games to see what they were trying to do. I have always been a Sonic fan, but now I feel equipped to be a Sonic expert... mostly by quoting you and trying to sound smart. Thank you!

Amazing how you've been able to talk and analyze about Chaotix for almost 4 months straight. But it worked, because I really want to try it out someday soon!! Thank you for all the great videos!

4:06 Kolibiri was actually a pretty interesting game, and for the time it looked absolutely gorgeous with highly detailed sprites and lush backgrounds. It isn't much by today's standards, and it certainly isn't worth $100+ just to play it on the original cartridge.

It took me a sec to process Nick referring to his wife as someone bonded to him by a ring. Top tier joke 10/10 lol

Wonderful video. I bought a 32X for this game alone a couple years back and I don't regret it one bit. It's a game that's really not much fun coming off a Sonic marathon, and not one that isn't much fun to complete per se, since there's not really a sense of progression, which was part of what made the classics so great. But I do enjoy the gameplay tremendously, and I often fire it up on a holiday morning or when I'm hung over, it just feels so nice move around in colourful "Super 32X world".

Nick, thanks so much for being the biggest bro of last year (and this one so far) and covering all of this excellent material. The fact that you've trucked through Chaotix like you have while still providing your usual other content is staggering, tremendously so. I am proud to be one of your subscribers, and I, along with many here, will always support the passion that you exhume whenever you've got the mic about all these old games from our childhood. Toot-toot, Game Apologist!

my favorite way to play Chaotix is to ignore the tether and hold vector like a giant spinning chainsaw for 90% of the game.
