This game did change my life. Imagine this, I saved up months of pocket money and bought Sonic 3 myself. All my money. It wasn't a present, my parents didn't give me the last bit of money when I was short, it was all mine. I played the game constantly, I was finding out ways to get the the chaos emeralds as quickly as possible, finding all the secrets. I'd only had the game a month or so, so was still early in to the Honeymoon period of getting a new game. Whats this got to do with Sonic Spinball? Well... I visited my cousin, who I see every couple of weeks or so, and I took Sonic 3 as he wanted to have a go and I wanted to play it with him. After several hours it was time to go. He asked if he could borrow Sonic 3, which I refused as I'd not long had the game and was still enjoying it immensely. He asked again, and I refused. Pressure then came from both my mum and auntie, again I refused, it was my game. I bought it with my money, it was still rather new new, I was still playing it on a very regular basis. But my mum overruled me and said he could borrow it in exchange he'd lend one of his games. I think you can see where this is going. His game collection was OK, but not great. It's not that he got cheap games, he just made bad choices. I had no interest in any of his games. The game I was offered in return was.... you guessed it Sonic Spinball. Now I try to look after my games. Im not possessive over all still had manuals in decent condition boxes where in tact and no breaks or scuffs on the box. This sonic spinball was in terrible state. The box wouldn't close, the cartridge looked dirty, the manual was missing, This was a game which had only been out a couple of months and already the game was in this condition. Over the next few months, when I visited, I asked for the game back but was given excuses of my cousin is out, he's still playing it. It was after about 6 months of asking, my mum finally returned from visiting with my Sonic 3. At last. The box looked tatty. It looks like the box got wet, with some food substance and suspiciously didn't look right. It had been broken. I opened the box. Manual still there and looks in decent condition. What about the cartridge......... Not there....... I.. WAS.. FUMING.. The next time I visited I quizzed my auntie and cousin where the game was and where it had been. It turns out my cousin lent MY Sonic 3 to another one of his friends who destroyed the cover, broke the box and lost the cartridge. But all is good, I was allowed to keep his Sonic Spinball as compensation. I can honestly tell you, I have never played Sonic 3 since. This horrible experience as tainted my enjoyment of a classic wonderful game and my faith in humanity in general. I still have the empty, faded, tatty, Sonic 3 box on my shelf; next to the broken, tatty, unclosable box of Sonic Spinball. So when you its not going to change your life, you've obviously never been hurt so much by Sonic Spinball. Great video as usual.... even if it has brought back the pain I thought I had laid to rest.

I was thinking that sounds pretty sad and messed up and I can't imagine that happening to me.... Then I remembered I lost my SNES to someone 'looking after' it while we moved countries and then never giving it back... And my n64 was stolen, along with all my games... A few other mishaps have happened with my PC game collection too, but not as dramatic as that. Wow, memories suck sometimes... (I got a replacement n64 as a gift about 2 years later, but I didn't get another SNES for something like 30 years. I had paid for the SNES out of my own money too. Not an easy feat for a kid.)

I wish someone with the skill would do a fan remake of this for the PC. Tweak the physics, add quick saves/checkpoints, bump it to 60 fps and add modding support and, voila, a great game! :)
@KuraIthys5 жыл бұрын
To be fair it's probably already 60 fps*. Most games from the 8 and 16 bit era are unless they try and do something that's super-taxing on the hardware. (like some fake 3d effect or way more sprites than a given hardware platform can reasonably handle or lots of bizarre graphical effects) Sonic runs at 60 fps. Mario runs at 60 fps. F-Zero runs at 60 fps. Mario Kart runs at 60 fps. All three original Zeldas run at 60 fps. It's not a big deal for this generation of game. (* - unless it's running on a PAL system in which case it's 50 fps, but while marginally lower it's not that big a deal.)

As "just fine" as this game can be, I have a lot of really nostalgic memories with it. I don't know what it is, but I really dig the spritework and level themes. It looks about as '90's' as a Sonic game can get... which I love. Also, the options music makes me laugh. It's hilariously ear-grating, which makes me like it ironically for some reason. *On a side note, how would you react if this game got some sort of reference in the live-action movie? Random question, but I'm kinda curious.*
@GameApologist5 жыл бұрын
It's largely going to depend on how I'm feeling about the movie as a whole. If I'm having a miserable time, no amount of "Hey you remember THIS thing?!" will cheer me up. That said, I'm not really sure what they could bring from Spinball that I'd even want to see! But if I see some kind of reference, I'll at least appreciate knowing they did their homework!

I want to say I got this game for my birthday in 1994. I can't remember for sure. I do remember playing it for hours because it was so difficult, but also because it was so much fun. Even as a kid, you could definitely tell that it was not made by the same team that created the other games. The gameplay was, as you mentioned, completely different. I remember thinking of it almost like the Sonic version of the redheaded stepchild. It wasn't as desirable back in the day and I remember the reviews being mixed, but it was still pretty fun to play. I just bought a Genesis Mini to give to my kids for Christmas, and I hope to revisit this game soon!

It takes so long to get through the levels, by the time you've beaten level 2 you've definitely had your fill and move on. this game was fun, a kid back in the 90's searching for anythting lore related to sonic especially seeing snips of the Satam cartoon on australian TV only to notice the charecters in SSB was the drive to keep playing the game to unlock any more secrets, same time I was an avid collector of the sonic archie comics too but again kid in the 90's with no real internet access thats all I had to go on, SSB defornetly was a different game, no necessarily mastering the mechanics of the controls but getting familur with them enough to make it to the end but least there wasnt a dull moment getting to the end (unless you died enough times to literally memorize the sewer level) it was always one of those things that this game was weird, especially adding the Satam/Archie charecters, as a kid I begged for this stuff but to see it but not able to really have that play ability with the charecters was sort of a let down to the game, still SSB holds a place on my top few games of the past

Oh man! I remembered playing this game when I was little and I had such a rough time with this game. I had trouble trying to get through this game and it took me like 10 tries before I actually got through it. Awesome video!

6:15 I think part of the reason it never had a Sequel, was because Sonic Spinball has connections to Sonic SatAM and the Archie Comics. 7:50 Because Sonic Spinball has connections to Sonic SatAM. The second Cover has Robotnik in his SatAM appearance.

I like Sonic Spinball, farting robot music and all, fight me. It did need more time in the oven though, specifically the physics.

God, I remember this game, it brings back nostalgia for the Sega Smash Pack. I’d love to see the game brought into current year with tweaked physics and everything!

Ngl I liked Spinball. While it wasn't exactly a Sonic game, it was a neat game to kill time.

I agree that if the game had the same physics as the mainline games, it would've felt great. I always enjoyed its aesthetic and soundtrack, well beyond when I played it when I was younger. But, I can't deny my satisfaction only goes as far as the first level. It feels the most satisfying of the four. Also, I has absolutely no idea you could speed up the game. I am going to boot it up right now. I really want to know how that feels.

Funny how he apologizes to us for the bad music in options he's dragging it out forcing us to endure it while apologizing for making us listen. It's like dude you're making us listen, just say sorry quickly and cut it out.

I just realized that after hearing the spin ball version of the spin dash, the scene where sonic uses it after he almost gets burned in the movie makes it sound more like this rendition rather than the genesis version.

honestly a sonic pinball game deserves another chance. it was way too good a concept to waste on an okay game like this. like, imagine: eggman opens a giant casino sometime after mania. this casino, is obviously powered by the seven chaos emeralds, split off into different artificially-themed zones. the zones themselves are all distinct from one another, but the scenery is clearly fake. the areas would be: a green hill-esque table, a casino night-esque table, a mystic cave-esque table, an airship fortress table, a water-themed table, an ice cap-esque table, an ancient ruins table, and finally a grand finale table with an extremely ritzy eggmanland table. each table besides the final one are accessable from the start. they each have a chaos emerald attached to them, with a mission tied to each table and a boss. defeating the boss of each table is what opens the path to eggman. however, the chaos emerald, which is much harder to get, requires you to beat a series of missions that lead into a harder boss fight. earning the chaos emerald attains wizard mode, and attaining wizard mode on each table (sans eggmans table) unlocks super sonic, which functions as a means of getting to the secret area in eggmans table... wherein lies the true final boss. the game ends with eggman getting so mad he tilts the table, which ends in the entire base exploding.

There was a normal speed all these years? What the fuck, lmao. About Toxic Caves being the first level, I don't recall exactly how recently it was discovered but I believe there was intended to be a level before that, even lower in the fortress.

Its worth mentioning that this game is based on the universe of the saturday morning cbs cartoon/archie comics. The characters that you save in spinball are the same. This would also explain why the first level looks like it does
