You skipped over something that I personally REALLY appreciated in this game: The sprite work. Sonic has 360 rotations. Tails will doggy paddle when under water. Each character has SOOO many different animations, and it really adds to the game.

I think it's interesting how Mario has these origins going back to arcades, has a design intended to work with limited sprite colors, and we just had to get used to his colors changing a lot and the awkwardness of what was the "correct" look for a while, before everything settled into boring and static and they started erasing any of the fun variant designs like Paper or And Luigi whereas with (classic) Sonic it's subtle.. who got the eyes quite right? do you like the periwinkle of the original, the pure sapphire of 3, or the azure of Mania? Should he have those little yellow buckles on his shoes? At no point were there ever "off-model" Sonic sprites. everything was pure and perfect until the Adventure era ruined everything forever I mean gave us more options and refreshed something with a bold, new- naw ruined forever.

One thing you didn't mention in that Tails video is how back in the 90s a lot of people thought he was a girl (kids who couldn't read, I guess? this one I knew also thought Sonic was a cat) And that was apparently their original idea, hence the romantic Dreams Come True ending song (citation not found? but I know I read it somewhere) and in my opinion, like most young boy sidekicks, he would have made a much better girl. And certainly would have been better than Amy (who didn't make it into Mania when fuckin Bark, Fang, and Bean did)

I love the deapth of view effect of the top of the water in Hy-drocity level. So many layers of parallax scrolling. I'm gonna have to put on sonic 3 with knuckles now. I never got round to doing it. I tested the knuckles cart when I got it but not coupled it with sonic 3 Great video as usual.

Hudrocity is one of those zones where you're at the will of the game's gravity, being pulled every which way (and loose!) Marble Garden otoh is this vertically scrolling environment kin to a more modern HillTop off of Sonic II. Balance your use of all three shields carefully.

The one thing you gotta remember, the big arms boss was actually hard. you couldnt just go super and defeat it, if he grabbed you then you lost your rings, we all know that is was a bug but damn it made the battle harder because of it. and the music for that battle, its the OG why do i hear boss music? i love this game.

From that any similarities between his songs and the tunes in Sonic 3 are coincidental to that he left the project because he wasn't satisfied with what the Megadrive could put out (yet he was ok with Moonwalker that obviously has his music as well) or that Sega wanted to separate the link being a toy company after the allegations.

Nicely covered. I've never really been a fan of the new sprites, and I think the level art is a little more crunchy, though a CRT blends it a little better. And not like it's bad--it's just different. I can't remember how long it took 8-year-old me to figure out the barrels. To this day I don't even know the level select code offhand like I do for Sonic 1 and 2, so I must have gotten through soon enough. I also can't remember my reaction to the end of Launch Base. But I think it was well hinted that S&K was coming out soon after as the followup. There was only an 8 month gap between the releases, and I got them probably in about 6 months between my birthday and Christmas. 1994 was a great year to be a Sonic fan.

I don't understand this logic. The only thing Sonic 3 & Knuckles added was Knuckles, Tails in S&K stages, and unnecessary hyper forms that look quite seizure-inducing. Hyper Sonic gives me a massive migraine lol. But if Sonic 3 on its own is bland, and Sonic & Knuckles on its own is just too frustrating, then how does combining the two games make the experience the best you've ever had? This isn't a rhetorical question either. I really am curious. ^u^'

All I can say is play them, but remember you really had to play them at their time of release to truly appreciate how good Sonic 3 & Knuckles was and in many ways still is, compared to other games of that time.

@@jballs5434 Have you seen Super Tails? He has a bunch of little yellow birds fly around and destroy everything in their path. Also, Tails actually gets a Super form. And exists past Launch Base Zone. There is also a drastically different campaign for Knuckles in Sonic 3 compared to Sonic and Tails. Of course, there are also a few smaller differences as well. The S&K bonus stages appear in the Sonic 3 levels so you don't just get stuck with the gumball. There are a few little nooks here and there in S&K that only tails can reach. It primarily just adds Tails to S&K and Knuckles to Sonic 3, but there's a lot of unique content there.

I was stuck on that barrel for over a year. Then one of my friends just told me to push up-and-down on the d-pad and it took me 3 seconds to get past it. Maybe not actually 3 seconds, but it was irritating to know that's all I needed to do! Still my one of my favorite Sonic games.

I actually got this game after I got Sonic and Knuckles, so I already knew Sonic 3 was just the appetizer to the main course. Such a great appetizer. You could say I was already... game-informed. You know, because I read about it in Game Informer. This was way back when GI was a fun little magazine made by a bunch of humble gamers from the Twin Cities. Side note: does anyone else miss FuncoLand? Or even know what it was?

I'm not lying when I say it took me years until I found out you needed to press down to get past the barrel. I think it was probably getting near the end of the Gabecubes lifecycle when I had the urge to go back to and play the game one day and by accident found out that was how you beat that part. I was ecstatic and ran around the house yelling with joy to now finally be able to see what was beyond the barrel lol!

Ive been watching a LOT of your videos after finding you recently and I have to say, you have some pretty quality content. But imo, THE best gag you have ever made, is the 45 second bit you did right here at 1:46-2:31. The comedic timing is PERFECT and the your scream of rage is so well done, it makes me laugh every time, even on my 5th watch. Marble Garden is my favourite level, especially with Sonic. The spinning top works as if the spindash was a fighting game input (which it kinda is already since its toggling a button's function with a d-pad direction), in that it's a harder to pull off but superior variation of a similar, easy to input action. That said it is weird to make something so tricky mandatory for progression. Really it's how it tests the most of what Sonic can do the most. There's braking on hills to spindash, there's varied kinds of platforms, lots of ways to jump off inclines, the shields etc. love it. I guess I'm more interested in that '''cramped and linear design''. I like a level that recognises all the little nuances of the controls and throws things at all of them in an intense linear obstacle course. Personally don't see the point in too much exploration because it always comes down to speed anyway and the ''wrong routes'' just annoy me eventually.

Oh heaven yes? Sonic exclusives FireShield: Throw fire at enemies (Won't work on proper boss fights/minibosses), ElectricShield: Electric jump (quite bit higher than normal), WaterShield: Bounceable bubble (Hold a jump longer on the second tap for a higher bounce). I forget offhand but there is a GameGenie cheat to "use" your shield multiple times during a single jump (I.E., you haven't hit the ground yet). That's my personal favorite: Shield spamming (Also works for the normal InstaShield :-?

For me personally I loved every about sonic 3. tails’ flying ability came in super handy during problem solving situations as I started off with the duo together, I instantly recognised tails’ usefulness with his new ability and his swim animation cemented him as my favourite character. Especially as I saw myself in tails’ shoes. Sonic was my hero especially as I had fallen victim to bullying at a young age so I was tails looking up to sonic my hero for saying my otherwise shitty childhood. And I saw all the cut scenes with knuckles watching him gloat as he was just out of reach, especially after that sucker punch at the start of the game, and watching him fall off his high horse with the death eggs take off as much needed comeuppance. I initially got the bad ending as I was one or two chaos emeralds shy of super sonic but I dove straight back in and collected them all and my gods it was satisfying to be super again and again. Playing as tails I felt that he was cheated out of some unique shield abilities there was so much that could have been done especially with the lightning and fire shields, the fire could have shot you straight up while flying and the lightning could have copied the insta-shield but alas. But for people saying he’s easy mode use that as a cheap dismissal of the “sidekick” for if you wanted an insta-sheild variation with tails you needed to have your tail propellers in just the right spot to bounce certain projectiles and the have a unique way destroying badniks. While the Robotnik battle in marble garden was a whole other kettle of fish as you spent most of your time avoiding the good doctor waiting for him to fly across the screen or from top to bottom. Where as sonic once you learnt his abilities he was somewhat over powered and that was before he goes super let alone hyper once you combined the two cartridges especially with the insta-shield once you got the hang of it the orbinauts which normally required you to avoid it all together or abuse the damage buff became child’s play with the insta-shield. I get it sonic is the cool blue dude with the attitude but tails is a hero in his own right and he was learning how he can overcome his challenges in his own right in sonic 3 and knuckles. Also knuckles could have used the new shield much the same as sonic could with his gliding abilities

Hydrocity was the only water level I have ever enjoyed in any game ever and the music sticks with you for years. That barrel in Carnival night fucked me up as a 9 year old in 1994 for about a week until I stopped dying there. I kept thinking I went the wrong way into a one way trap.

Best part about Sonic & Knuckles is that playing Sonic 3 with Knuckles means that you don't encounter the dreaded barrel. That was the only way I was able to defeat Sonic 3, until I found out how to get past it 12 years later when I looked it up in a walkthrough.

This detail that im sure most dont' focus on it but when you do you're like "OH YEA! THATS RIGHT!" an I love that kind design. The reason (this is just my head canon) there is more water in this game then the others is because Angel Island is normally in the Air but its in the Ocean. THOU~ I think they kind of messed up with the island starting in the Ocean since Robotnik doesnt steal the Master Emerald until Hidden Palace. An if you think of THAT....Then what is Sky Sanctuary relation to it.

the background of the story is that the Death Egg crash landed into Angel Island, forcing it out of the sky and into the ocean. This act also destroyed the Angel Island's set of emeralds, allowing Robotnik to trick Knuckles into thinking Sonic stole the Emeralds and are after the Master Emerald.

The only thing in Sonic history I never figured out on my own. No other point in the game (or any game before or after) utilized up and down for any real reason besides "looking".

That carnival night music repeating and getting louder was bringing back childhood nightmares. Before I owned the game i used to rent the game from my local video shop and i could not get past carnival night zone. Such frustration... I rented it out again a couple of weeks later and someone had gotten to ice cap zone and 9 year old me was so greatful to the person who got past carnival night zone. I figured it out eventually but those damn barrels broke my spirit for a bit as a child i swear!

Most of the bad involves 2 things in Sonic 3 alone: 1: Sonic's collision when running into floors while running down walls while holding right. 2: Tails level start in Icecap Act 1 where the game kills you unless you return from a Starpost or a Special Ring. The game doesn't set a loop when Tails enters the stage.

It took me years to find the trick for easily moving the barrel. I always just jumped on it and slipped underneath it when it bounced back up high enough to progress, lol.

At least I was. Some people complained about the price but while the thing is ungodly expensive the basic idea of having you be able to play the 1-in-2 and then play all of them in the third game is still good

I just found this channel tonight and really like your videos so far. Just a small detail I wanted to point out, and that is this is NOT the first time we've had a cutscene in a Sonic game. Remember Tails flying Sonic up to the Death Egg in Sonic 2? I'd also just like to say that I've always really liked the Marble Garden Zone. I'm not sure why, but for some reason, it holds the most nostalgia for me out of all zones in the game, and I never found anything wrong with it. I was shocked when I first heard that people didn't like it.

I'm not quite sure that was a cutscene in Sonic 2. It was cinematic, but the timer was still ticking. You could actually die of Time Over if you didn't get there fast enough, so I consider it a part of the level, not unlike the opening of of Wing Fortress. That's just my opinion, though. This distinction is kind of a grey area.

I just realized; Sonic 3 is a carnival. It's not *just* Carnival Night Zone; there are teacup rides in Launch Base, water slides in Hydocity, tops in Marble Gardens, swings and rope rides in Angel Island, snow boarding in Ice Cap, etc. It really IS influenced by the retreats the developers went on the rest from burn out, stuff they did to relax. THAT'S why they revisited the amusement park theme in Chaotix for the 32X...

The Gensis Sonic Games are few of the 16 Bits classics I need to play through at least every 2 years. Mentioning this, it's time again! Fantastic games, which are well crafted, look great and have exceptional sound. The music from Sonic 3 was one of the reasons I started a databank of videogame music. It's very interesting to know what the Genesis sound chip can do, knowing lots of games which don't sound bad, but give an impression of more limited hardware than it really is.

It's a different kind of challenge than playing with Sonic/Tails. Metropolis and other vertical levels are easier, but the final boss is much harder. He just stands there with his weak spot just out of reach. Red Knuckles can't jump! You can beat it, but it requires much more work.

In my opinion , Sonic 2 by far had the best mini-game stage! It was so colorful and made you feel Sonic's speed. You were going so fast that your momentum carried you around the freaking half pipe to the other side! And to top it all off! The level colors of the level matched what ever emerald you were chasing after!
