Game Boy Game Won't Boot Up - White Screen - Fixing eBay Junk

I just picked up a Game Boy Game that won't boot up. It gets past the Nintendo Logo, but then gets stuck at a white screen. Turns out to be a pretty quick fix.

Quick FYI, Grey cart shell = Gameboy game Black shell = Gameboy and Gameboy Color compatibility Transparent shell = Gameboy Color only. The Barbie game has GBC functionality so that's why it has the better color palette.

It's awesome when a content creator listens to their viewers. Having said that, I feel bad. I submitted criticism when I was ignorant to the process KZbin uses. Nice! I fixed 5 of these a few weeks back. All but one of them it was a loose top right leg on that ROM chip. Guess it's a common fault! 😬

It is actually a Game Boy Color game. Black cases were hybrid games that played in full colour on a Game Boy Color, but still were backwards compatible with an original B&W Game Boy. Unlike the Game Boy Color games that came in transparent cases, those only played on a Game Boy Color. Excellent video btw. I have a similar white screen problem with a cartridge of R-Type DX and am hoping to get the chips re-flowed soon, so this will hopefully fix it.

Great video! Im trying to fix a Zelda cartridge with corroded pins. Sometimes I get through the Nintendo boot screen, but like in this video I end up looking at a white screen. I will try resolder the pins like you have shown :)

Thanks for this video! I learned that you can clean around the chips from your video with alochol and that worked perfectly in reviving a "Fortress of Fear" Game Boy that I just purchased. It works perfectly now when it wouldn't even load before. Thanks again! I'm now a subscriber! :D

I'm just curious; Have you considered using a light table/tracing table to visually check for broken traces on other carts? A meter can tell you that a trace is broken, but since light can pass through a circuit board, a light table can help you pinpoint where the break is...

@@RetroRepairs Ah! To clarify, what I'm talking about is more of a tablet, than a table (I'm not sure why I still refer to them in that way...), just a little larger than a sheet of paper, and battery/usb powered. Take a look on Amazon for 'tracing pad' and see what I mean... :-)

It's a Game Boy-Compatible Game Boy Color game. (Games that comes in a black cartridge are made for the Game Boy Color, but has also Game Boy compatibility in mind.) Only the Crystal clear games are not compatible.

Thats one of those "enhanced" gameboy games as I like to call them, which explains the colour. In fact Links Awakening DX is just like that, black and white on the dmg and colour on gbc and gba.

You said it was not a game boy color game when in fact it is. black cartridge games are game boy color games that are backwards compatible with original Gameboys so they have both a color mode and black and white mode

Awesome video, Have a quick question. I have Resident Evil Gaiden Gameboy color and got it to boot and start, but once I get past the beginning dialogue the game crashes. I did reflow the chip and it always crashes. First it would go blank screen, then after some cleaning white screen. It seems to crash right before you can control the game. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you ever replaced the shell on a Dsi Gameboy?..If you have can you recommend a good place to get replacement shells I was hoping to fix my kids Dsi that has a cracked shell and Hinge.

All the new shells that are really available are lower-quality aftermarket ones, though you might be able to find an old original shell harvested from a non-working DSI. It's very complex process due to the hinge and screens.

A Question: I have a Gamboy Color cart that I been trying to fix and it has a garbled nintendo at the start, but I tried Isopropal, and the eraser a few times and still nothing, though I tested the traces from the verticies to the pins and chips and most of them are fine. Would it still be the pins?
