A very common issue with original Game Boy DMG. Over time, the connection to the display starts to fail, and notable vertical lines start to appear. It's a very easy fix and I show you how to fix this problem.

i recently repaired about 10 gameboys with this method. The hardest part for me was getting the rubber strip back in the right spot.

i took apart a gameboy like this to clean it up, and found a rusty staple stuck to the speaker magnet, nice little surprise.

It's fascinating how the screen wasn't just striped, it was blanking to white at a certain interval. Anyway, I love your videos. I love how few cuts you make. Like, you could stream your work live, you're so deft with your work.

I have 3 gameboys that were mine and my brothers' growing up that I need to do this with. They all have the missing vertical bars but are in good condition otherwise. Would be fun to fix them up and gift them back.

A plastic spuger to add light pressure while you heat the area makes this faster and more reliable in my experience lesst chance of the lines coming back

Nicely done man! I had to do this with a Gameboy my sister in law gave me. Works like a charm now. I also added a foam strip to the ribbon cable to add additional pressure so that it will have a more secure connection.

ok, I've got an original gameboy, but the screen only half works. I took it apart and the connectors for the screen are coming undone. I'm not sure how to fix this. If anyone knows of a video to help with this, or creates one, could you link me in on it please.

I have a dmg where the whole screen flickers, not in the lines like you have, maybe a problem with the chip driving the screen?
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 2 жыл бұрын
Certainly seems like it could be a power issue to the screen if it's all flickering. Maybe caps, maybe the chip, I'm not too sure

I have a couple DMG's with horizontal lines.. I understand horizontal lines are alot more difficult to fix.. if at all.
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 2 жыл бұрын
It's the same fix, just way trickier to get access to. I've never tried one but i believe you need to desolder the screen to get at the back
@ploggy2435
@ploggy2435 2 жыл бұрын
Huh, seems more trouble than its worth right now, there's a single horizontal line on both.. annoying but not enough to potentially wreck them by desoldering the screens, but if I ever decide to go the lcd replacement route I'll take a stab at it then :)

I'd probably just replace the adhesive strip with some kapton tape.
@RetroRepairs
@RetroRepairs 2 жыл бұрын
It's double sided tape so the display sticks a bit to the rubber pad on the shell. Kapton tape wouldn't do anything

@@RetroRepairs I definitely appreciate the info. I just learned to solder recently, and I'm still feeling out what temps are required for different work. Actually, about to attempt this on one of my own DMG's, and it's nice to have a concrete number to start with before going to work on a delicate, 30 year old ribbon cable!
