Sampson, you buy a digital antenna to get local channels therefore you still get the games on those channels.
@EBR8467 ай бұрын
Been doing this for over a year. If you're like me and can't justify paying cable prices for what it offers but want for example more nuanced weather forecasts on-demand (recorded on DVR) vs. what you get online which for me, is either 1) in text (like most) or 2) station website video forecasts that often where I live are not always posted in a timely manner and later than the corresponding weather forecast (one reason that might be due to stations making money off of cable subscriptions according to YT channel Antenna Man and stations would rather you subscribe to cable if weather is one of the reasons you subscribe to cable but I don't know..this has been going on for years how hard is it to post a damn video?) *THEN it's useful to have TiVo's Edge DVR for an atennna.* Streaming options for sports help as well if they're not some of the more expensive options but honestly, if this new even bigger conglomerate thinks they're going to charge people a ton of money and take them back to cable level prices or more, I think people need to say "No thanks." Read books more. Get outside more and I don't know..actually play sports. More than a small percentage of these people that are really into sports that attend games look like they haven't played the sport they're apparently REALLY into in MANY years..or even any kind of physical activity other than walking to and from their car. Cost for the all-in *TiVo antenna DVR on-sale* is more up front at $318 (incl tax) but pales in comparison over the long-term to cable and there is no subscription fee, it's up front.

Pretty sure John Skipper is the subject matter expert here. David kept talking over him and was working pretty hard to be the smartest guy in the room. I think David’s points would be more palatable if he relaxed a little and let others talk.
@zts6937 ай бұрын
To answer David's primary question: "who is this for?", It's for sports fans who ONLY maintain their cable subscriptions for sports. This is probably a huge demo. Cable is dead. As a 30 year old, I can't remember the last time I tuned in for live non-sports television. The NFL will have to be figured out (CBS, RedZone??), but you'll probably be able to watch most of your sports content between this package and an Amazon subscription (RSNs). I think this is sports jumping off the sinking ship that is cable and is the first domino to fall that ends in Comcast/DirecTV/etc all sinking.
@dannygibson25977 ай бұрын
Right, but do you also pay for Max, Hulu, Netflix or any movie subscriptions? why not just have literally everything imaginable under one subscription? That's what cable was, and that's why it worked.

Agree with this being the true fall of cable. CBS, Redzone, Sunday Ticket, NBC all have streaming offerings. This is truly them not holding up cable anymore. The reason there isn’t one subscription is that companies don’t want to split the revenue. At some point, these companies are gonna realize that they can’t recreate what Netflix. Then they’ll come together to make streaming profitable.

Many of the dinosaur big box stores getting pushed aside by Amazon used to be the nimble disruptors of their day using catalogues to reach their audience in their homes and having big central warehouses to distribute their goods. Then they shifted to brick and mortar to reach ever more shoppers until they became the industry they were wiping out way back in the day.

It's essentially a linear cable TV package, that only includes the channels owned by the three companies that have sports. These same programmers refuse to let traditional cable TV companies offer these kinds of "skinny bundles," but are doing it themselves. It would be good for someone who only subscribes to KZbinTV or Hulu Live for sports, and also can get over the air TV via antenna for local NFL games. EDIT: Not sure if they get to this, but another reason they're doing this is, with only a 1/3 stake, the expenses don't go on their balance sheet, it just comes out of cash. It's a defensive move against cord cutting that is accretive.

They are accelerating the rate of cord-cutting by under-pricing the sports bundle. They will force all the sports to this bundle and when cable surrenders, then MAYBE streaming can be priced high enough to earn a profit.
@socalalex267 ай бұрын
Pablo speaks as a relative young person, but not an actual young person. While older millennials may be thinking "We're back to cable!", this isn't occurring for younger generations. This new sports bundle buys these companies some extra time to get millennials and older generations to subscribe, but it doesn't compete against the "free" social media platforms that younger generations spend the majority of their time on. They aren't going to pay for this kind of thing because they get what they need without paying through KZbin, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitch, Kick, and Snapchat. They don't need to pay to watch sports games live if they don't have to, they can watch viral clips and otherwise through the aforementioned platforms. Cable is still dying, and thinly-veiled "New Cable" streaming mega packages costing $50+ won't ever catch on and will just die off along with cable as the older generations age out.

Something you’re overlooking is that the word sports means something different to everyone. For some people Sports means the Westminster dog show for some people sports means college football. And some people sports means neither of those things. Why would a dog show watcher paid to see college football, and why would a college football enthusiast pay to see dog shows? Or Olympics? Or Motorsports? A bundle just means certain fans are paying half of their money for the opportunity to watch sports that they will never watch.
