“It's simple. It's painless, and it was a miracle. In three weeks I lost 18 pounds, and by three months, I had lost 38 pounds..."
For several years Ozempic has been on the market to treat type 2 diabetes. It improves the way the body handles excesses of the hormone insulin. A side effect was that patients lost 15 percent of their body weight. So last year, in June of 2021, it was reformulated and approved for weight loss for patients, who are not diabetics, under the name Wegovy.
“This drug is not a stimulant. It simply makes you feel full. We know that it affects your brain. It mimics a hormone that affects the satiety centers in your brain,” explained Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Matthew French.
Dr. French of Surgical Specialists of Louisiana, says about 20 of the clinic's patients have used Wegovy.
“And they say they just don't get hungry. They don't want the food. They don’t have the craving. And that's a powerful tool for losing weight,” explained Dr. French.
“And I wasn't hungry, which was great. The best thing about this drug is it made alcohol taste horrible,” said Hare who noted she packed on part of her weight from the sugary calories in beer and wine.
But after six months, Ramsey is no longer on Wegovy. Her cost-saving coupon ran out. Most Louisiana insurance companies don't pay for weight-loss medication like hers. Despite the long-term cost savings when people maintain ideal weight, companies don't include it in their coverage. The other problem is the drug is in high demand and can be difficult to get.

I am an ozempic patient for my diabetes. The weight loss patients use of wegovy and ozempic have made Ozempic scarce for diabetics. It took me 3 months but I was able to get my insurance company to approve the Ozempic. The weight loss has been good but the lowering of my a1c will probably save my life.

Seems unfair that people who need it to potentially save their lives can't get this drug because of people using it to get in a dress they want to wear to the red carpet, like not going to name names, but then they get on tic toc, everyone wants it. Weight loss is good for health, but if you are already diabetic, you should have priority, and it should be made affordable, and easily approved.

I am chronically ill, been on chemo and prednisone nonstop for 17 years. I'm on other meds for side effects of other drugs (take care of your health everyone). So, I'm on many drugs that make it so hard to lose weight. I gained over 150 pounds from being bed ridden, disease and meds. I have tried EVERY DIET, program, medications etc since I can remember...even a surgery, to lose weight. Yes, some worked a bit, but it never lasted. I felt like a loser, quitter and really hated myself. OZEMPIC, so far, has stopped me from feeling hungry, thinking about food, and it makes it that I only eat a real single serving. This is how normally thin people must feel? I never EVER felt like this before. I pray it becomes more affordable for all. I've lost 30lbs since september and I feel high from it all. I feel "normal" and if you have fought weight most of your life you'll understand what I'm feeling. The side effects are real. I get some stomach problems (constipation and diarrhea), and burp all the time LOL, and nausea IS REAL. It's worse than the chemo I take weekly. I asked my doctor for zofran and it really helps. I usually take 1 to 2 zofran a week. I Did have diabetes, but after taking ozempic for the past few months along with metformin now sugars are fine. I also stopped taking metformin since things are ok now, and that was the cause of so many gut problems. I'm SO RELIEVED to be off that. I don't know if ozempic is a miracle, but I can say, that after taking it about 2 months, food never crosses my mind. And even when physically hungry I don't feel the need to curb it. I'm eating, don't get me wrong, but maybe 1 full meal A DAY right now. instead of 3 full meals. A chicken breast, salad, a side dish usually is eaten within the day but as small meals. Does that make sense? It took at least 6 weeks to really kick in, so don't give up. If you make little money you can get it free Just go on the ozempic manufacturer's web page and look up patient assistance. You can also get it for $25 a month if you have private insurance or through an employer. I'm only telling people because I know what it's like to be sick and have so much going against you...this stuff has helped me physically, but mentally, too I don't hate myself as much. Many of you will understand what I mean.

What helped me lose weight was moving out of S. Louisiana and trying foods prepared in different ways. I love the food, I love seafood, french bread, etc but most of us from this area aren't raised cooking or eating in the healthiest way. Not to mention there are healthier ways of celebrating than getting drunk and eating a ton of food.

I agree. Moved 18 years ago to Georgia and my diet has totally changed. I don't cook a ton of starches anymore I no longer eat white rice or beef and pork with the exception of bacon....lol. I never was the one to sit around drinking but I did indulge in it whenever I went to a party. Something I don't do anymore. Sometimes people have to change their environment and their mindset if they know they want to do better. I love the food I grew up on cuz it's my heritage and that's something that will always stick with me but I've learned how to do it in moderation. I could never give up my gumbo.

@@hkitty007 You can start with a shorter one and build from there. There are different lengths of IF. Start from when you've had your last meal of the day, skip breakfast (just have coffee to stave off the hunger), if you must eat, then have a boiled egg, then lunch and dinner. You will soon learn to live on only 2 meals a day and you will be less hungry throughout the day. Your body needs time to be able to digest food. Eating all the time, is not helping it. Hence why people get sick. Look up Dr Eric Berg on KZbin. He'll give you amazing advice to start the weightloss journey, which doesn't include taking meds. It's not only a diet change, but a lifestyle change.

IF isn't effective for everyone--at least the more moderate protocols. I tried the 16:8 protocol daily and was very intentional about it for 8 months with very few results until I finally just gave up on it. I follow Dr. Fung on KZbin who is a huge proponent of IF for diabetes management and insulin resistance. He also stated that some people don't respond to moderate IF protocols and may need to do something more extreme which I am definitely not a fan of. If I fasted for longer periods; I could probably get the results. However, I don't see that as being a long-term, sustainable option.

I continued taking it, but i ran out of it a couple of months ago, and now i want to find a "good endocronologist but is not easy to know who is bad who is good. Is a matter of luck. If you said that this medication help you to be off your tyro medication to which medication are you really talking about? My weight-loss doctor prescribed the generic injection, semaglutide and adipex for weight-loss. She calls it in to a pharmacy, named Empower here in Houston. The semaglutide is less than $60 and it's simply the generic name for Ozempic. Empower provides personalized medication that is both convenient and economical.

Semaglutide is not available in generic form yet, and won't be until Sept 2023 at the soonest, but more likely 2024. I just read an article about the civil litigation regarding the drug manufacturer, Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is a name brand drug, not a generic, and people on Medicaid won't be able to access it. People on private insurance will have an easier time.

U will see effects in 8 weeks so u start out on 0.25mg so ur body adjusting to it after 4 injections 30 days u will increase ur dosage to 1mg after ur 8th injection u will start to notice difference in ur weight but u still have to make sure u eat probably can't be eating ice cream candy and fried foods u still have to maintain somewhat of a diet but some people who are on it just get full drinking water and two bites of food. So basically it makes u feel full longer and in all ur stomach will go back to it's normal size or even smaller size best thing I would recommend since if u on that medication ozempic start boiling eggs eat those it helps and gets u full eat green vegetables cut ur carbs stay away from bread or fried foods eat in moderation and u will see ur pounds sheet without any exercise this medicine is suppressing ur appetite following this diet is not going to be a challenge for anyone you will lose over 80lbs without having to wait 10 months u be dropping it in around 4 months but if u don't follow any diet it will be taking longer 10 months or more so yes it's ur option some people can't diet and some do have to will power to do it u can drop 150lbs in less then a year with exercise 20min a day cardio walking not running just walking.

Ok, so I took it for about 2 months and lost about 20 pounds and stopped before Christmas so I could have a big meal with my family and never went back on it. I was exercising a little bit back then. My hunger was still suppressed for about 3-4 weeks, I was thinking I got used to eating less, had less bad habits, and smaller stomach. After about 6 weeks or so I had a moment where I almost never felt so hungry. My weight eventually went back up about 10 pounds, but I know I haven't been lifting weights, so I probably lost muscle mass and gained even more than 10 pounds of fat. I can still wear my smaller jeans that I couldn't before though. I started back up again at .75mg a week, and now 1mg a week. I barely need to eat, and I could only eat half of our family get together meal today. I will probably barely finished my left overs, so only 1 meal today. I do think my weight could have been maintained if I was exercising, but we had lousy weather this winter. That's my excuse anyways... Also I noticed my heart rate seems to average 8-12 beats per hour, I think this is increasing metabolism.

(please note that I have never been fat but I did want to shed a few pounds) If you are not a diabetic, why not consider fasting? It's cheaper but it will suck for the first few weeks. I only eat one meal a day and after a few weeks have passed, I do not experience hunger pangs as much as the average person (maybe once every 4 days). I drink lemon water/zero calorie drinks/tea through out the day as I work. Fasting consistently will cause your body to produce less ghrelin (hunger hormone) and it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars an injection.

The US have a form of ‘public health care’ though that Obama wrote into law. It’s probably double $60 on average but other political party criticize it so much that uninformed people who are swayed by dishonest Republicans (Trump’s party) don’t use it. Most employed people get insurance through their jobs and sometimes the better the job, the better the insurance. The advantage of US healthcare is the quality. Hospitals feel like hotels. The care is high level. You can get diagnosed, surgery done next week and you go home feeling like you were never diagnosed with whatever it was. But of course, if you are really poor and struggling that’s when you may not have health care which is horrible. Yeah Trump’s party did things to deliberately drive up the price of ‘Obamacare’ just to make it fail’ and people still vote for them. People who can’t pay for ‘Obamacare’ are statistically still a small amount of people though. And Obamacare is not the name of the insurance. Republicans called it that when they were trying to give it a bad name like Obama’s name is bad. Obama is a class act.

They just slapped a generic name in it and raised the price. If there was enough, then more power to those that want to lose weight. There’s not enough currently hence he national VA shortage. There’s also side benefits of the drug that protects kidneys and hearts of diabetics that other diabetic medicines harm (trade off) Someone trying to lose weight does not take priority over saving someone’s actual life.

@@Squirt0624 Wegovy is not generic. Wegovy is the brand name of semaglutide that was studied for obesity when they saw the success diabetics on Ozempic were having with weight loss. It was approved for obesity in 2021. The shortage came in because people started promoting Wegovy. I believe uninformed drs exacerbated the problem by giving out Ozempic when it should have been Ozempic to their diabetics and Wegovy to their obese patients. They should have not interchanged one for the other once a shortage came up. Compound that on top of the manufacturing issue Novo Nordisk already said they had and ther you go. Outside of that, as I stated before, there are at least 5 other GLP-1RAs that diabetics can be put on. Ozempic is not the only one. GLP-1RAs are the magic behind the heart protection because they reduce inflammation. If you cared to fo any research, you would also see that people who are fortunate to get for their obesity related issues (true obesity related issues) are seeing additional benefits just as diabetics are...why shouldn't they also benefit? Insulin resistance is a very real thing in women with PCOS and is a driving factor in their risk for future diabetes and their difficulty in losing weight and getting pregnant. It's why they get put on Metformin (a diabetes drug, by the way). Wegovy is a fantastic tool for these women. They are wanting to continue studies on effects of GLP-RAs to assist with exacerbations of inflammation in autoimmune disease. Many, many, many have reported a marked decreasing in pain related issues and migraines. So, like I said, I understand the frustration behind drs prescribing the diabetes formulation for the weight loss formulation. But, there are others that could be prescribed in the very least to get through the few months of the shortage of one.

@@dianemendoza9531 actually they can not be prescribed something else for the shortage. We tried to go that route. He nearly died. It’s not a simple as you want to make it. Randomly mixing meds that aren’t supposed to be taken together dangerous. Suddenly starting or stopping dangerous. It took him MONTHS to build up to the dosage he needed. Sick the entire time because he couldn’t take other with it to help him bring his sugar down while he was gradually increasing to his needed dosage. Sugar consistently in the 280-300. Very bad things happen when you’re that high and they did. So no there is not anything for short term use. He’s either on it or not. He wouldn’t survive going through all that again. Bring in this medicine took him from 40 shots a week to 1. His kidney function improved where as before he was declining. He’s a quad heart surgery survivor. His heart function has improved. On his two previous diabetes meds, he was in decline. There are thousands in the VA same story. It’s not right. It will never be right. I respectfully disagree with you. We are living it in real time.

I just looked up the patent info for Ozempic and it reads: ‘Ozempic was eligible for patent challenges on December 5, 2021. By analyzing the patents and regulatory protections it appears that the earliest date for generic entry will be December 5, 2031. This may change due to patent challenges or generic licensing.’ 😢

It's good that it's helping people lose weight, but learning to eat healthy is important for overall health, not just your weight. I'm not sure how people are going to learn healthy eating habits by using this medication to trick themselves into feeling full. Eating meals that consist mainly of vegetables, fruits, lean meats and whole grains and staying away from highly processed junk food is necessary for life-long health - if you learn to eat healthy on a consistent basis with a reasonable caloric intake, the weight will come off naturally without the use of medication. And of course there are people out there who have metabolic disorders, but before you say anything, you must know that the grand majority (90-95% of us) are overweight because of our eating habits.
