That's right. Planning is everything, it is the phase that needs more time so be patient. Get a drawing notebook so you can draw what you want to see in your planned game or maybe just type in your ideas in notepad app. As for me, I had several list of ideas already but I haven't started any of them.

Very well said. I enjoyed watching this video. Most of the concepts presented here I've learned in 2020. It's hard to ask a developer-oriented person to time plan, prepare something for medium to long term because we are always not sure. But on the long run, this approach hurts a lot because without a destination you can have the best GPS, it won't take you anywhere. So, set a goal and don't stop until you achieve it. Don't get discouraged because the journey is important, not the destination.

Man 2019 my resolution was to buckle down and get some projects released. I accomplished that. 2020 my resolution was to get away from prepackaged engines and write my own. I accomplished that, but that project went through a pretty nasty patch over the past 3 months, and only just now (like yesterday) have I found the mental energy to pick it back up again. It's obviously so much harder, but its been a life long dream to roll my own tech and last year I did just that and already have plans for newer upcoming engines. 2021 will be the year I release my first game under my own technology. And I am excited for it!

Agree, it will be better if we make planning before starting development. You can use SMART Framework to plan your game development if you get confused about how to manage it. And make sure to divide your game into small chunk or milestone from prototype to MVP, release etc. It feels a lot of easier and shorter to achieve rather than a big chunk of developing the game and release it once. When you are developing your game, you can also use sprint or kanban to manage your development process. I personally using notion and kanban to manage my game, because it just a solo or a small team. And I get all my needs there. Also do not forget to plan the monetization too if you want to commercialize it. Good luck guys :3

what I do is all about daily time management. I pick 1 thing each day that is obviously good for me and just do it for like 2 hours. Doesn't have to be fast or amazing. By the end of the year, I end up accomplishing a lot. And, some days tend to cascade. Like I'll do my stretches in the morning and feel good, that will feed into having a great day at work, then once work is done I spend all night working on my personal project. Not every day is like that but every day starts with the 1 thing I described above.

Yeah, well...personally this year I set the goal to land a job as a game developer. I was making good progress until I had to get a "nice" steady income to support some familiy matters and being a rookie again would not help (or at least I believed that). Now I need to double the efforts to keep learning game dev and attend my day job as a SW developer, including the activities of being an adult. I still wonder if I took the right path since I have been delaying working on games for so long that I want to fulfill the goal that I set up. So I need to keep working and the next year start my personal project and turn this hobby into my profession. Anyway, just my $.02. Like always, great content John! Let's hope that we all stay safe and keep working in out projects.

One method I've seen an experienced developer suggest is the following: take your estimate, double it and/or increase the time unit by one. So, if you say "it'll take 3 days" you turn it into 6 weeks and that's probably more realistic once you factor in all the distractions, stupid meetings and bad teamwork.

A personal recommendation I can give people. Set deadlines for your project and be willing to make sacrifices along the way. Otherwise you may end up stuck working on something trying to reach perfection. That's not necessarily a bad thing but if you can learn how to ship a game then that means you can move on to more projects faster and the more projects you work the better they become. Simple.

Oh my GOD is that a thing? That early resistance curve? I nearly killed myself for nearly 2 whole years tearing my hair out learning Unreal Engine, nearly every waking minute.
@ArcangelZero7
@ArcangelZero7 3 жыл бұрын
I can seriously sympathize! I've been off-and-on beating myself against gamedev coding for like 8 years now? First Python, then C#, and it just wasn't "clicking." Only just now did Godot's "GDScript" start to actually *make sense* to me. It's HARD to stay motivated when you have no idea what to write in the "new script" file. And it's discouraging to constantly be getting silly, sometimes esoteric compiler errors. But you know what? Tiny bite-sized projects. Import some free asset. Make it move. Make it bounce randomly when you click on it. "Stupid" things like that. Take tutorial scripts and just start screwing with them to figure out how they work. Did it break it? Why? Can I improve it? It's at this point it will actually start to get FUN, because you're on the way to getting things to happen. One way to mess with things is to check the documentation of methods within engine classes. "Does it feel better if I use on_just_clicked instead of on_just_released?" That kind of thing. Don't give up! :)
@WoodysAR
@WoodysAR 3 жыл бұрын

As a game dev over a decade with 60 releases, I can say with much certainty that the indie dev, and possibly pro game dev, is most likely over. And yeah, its devastating but the writing is on the wall...
@ninja_tony
@ninja_tony 3 жыл бұрын
This couldn't be more false. I don't know why you choose to shit all over the very people doing or aspiring to do the same thing you claim to have been doing for years. Maybe you just don't want the competition. But in reality, game dev is a lot like any other creative field, such as music, art, and acting. It is ABSOLUTELY true that 99% of people will go into it and fail, but there are a million reasons why that is. But the opportunity is still great for anyone willing to work hard, anyone that is dedicated to growing and learning, and making mistakes. Most people that say they want to be a gamedev are not cut out for it, that is for certain. But to say that it's no longer possible for anyone to succeed as an indie dev is insane and misleading at best, and outright dangerous at worst. You're actively trying to dissuade people from their dream, just because YOU think they have no chance. But it doesn't matter what you think, or how much experience you claim to have, because you don't get to decide other people's success. THEY DO.

Hey man, just started looking into Unity and found your channel. I've been in software development for 20+ years and I must say I think you're doing it wrong. SD is not supposed to be a lonely grind with hardships, lack of motivation, etc. You need to find someone to collaborate with. If you don't have mates who code find someone online. I've worked on many different platforms in multiple languages, and I must say I'm a bit shocked by the lack of open source and collaborative efforts in game development. Maybe I'm missing something but so far the attitude in game dev seems to be “every man for himself”, “grind it out”, “I'll write my own whatever-engine”. Jesus christ you're wasting time. And Unity doesn't seem to help in any way. The whole thing is turning me off. Sorry for the rant. Be well mate.

@@ScilexGuitar That's fine, I'm sure many feel like you. But if your project is of a size that spans years, it's going to be difficult for many reasons, some of which OP brings up in videos. Personally I've found that there is nothing more motivating in a project than when shit gets done that you yourself didn't do. If I'm working on a heavy/boring issue/ticket just grinding the code, the feeling when my mates close other tickets is amazing. Easily keeps me going. Working with other people you also develop skills you otherwise do not - project management, code review, CI/CD, etc. All helpful if you later decide to take employment.
