To save some people the Google search the chip is an ARM9 SoC with 64MB of RAM, ostensibly with a maximum clock speed of 2.6GHz on the CPU clock though I'd wager they're probably using the default speed of 408MHz. Its display output can do up to 720p at 60fps which makes me wonder if one were able to get into the system I wonder how difficult it would be to get a TV output on one of these. Not pretending to be an expert on these though, this is just what I got from a quick look at the user's manual.

The datasheet says there is a "TVOUT" pin, but doesn't expand on what that signal actually is, maybe just composite video. Additionally it doesn't seem to have onboard flash (unless I'm reading it wrong) so one of those 8-pin SOICs could be an SPI flash ROM for storing the OS and user state? edit: Oops, I actually learned how to read. TVOUT is CVBS or composite, would be cool if it's enabled in the peripheral configuration.

Long time viewer but first time commenting. I know a thing or two about Allwinner's SoCs, and my money is on that button inside the shell allows you to interrupt boot and enter FEL mode. FEL is effectively a low-level recovery mode built into the Boot ROM itself, and it allows you to read/write and execute code in memory. My guess is that the only reason its there is to simplify the process of OS image flashing via USB at the factory. Conveniently, it will also make it easier to hack the device and dump NAND flash contents ;)

Hahaha.. you didn't fool me.. i knew the device was an actual GameGear at the start! Nice joke there... Kudos on another great video... Not really sure if i'd get myself one of these, as I agree, its for novelty, (coming from me who got a mini brick game keychain, i sent a pic of that to you on one of your gaming pickups, haha) but its definitely a great idea by Sega... Man, i played Sylvan Tale like years ago.. it's nice to see it working here..

That button is probably bootloader mode so it can be flashed. Which means it can probably be programed / hacked somehow.

So want one of those. Same it might not be available here.

Judging by how people in the West are bitching about it. I doubt it will get a western release.

No. The batteries I used in this video were really old ones.

what happens if you connect it to a PC, and what happens if you connect it to a PC with the button pressed? perhaps this is some kind of firmware mode... if you pay attention, the button can be accessed from the battery compartment. :)

Nothing. Did all of that.

Sega really should have launched a new game gear like this one but a little more bigger but smaller than the older one: with a USB port to charge a battery instead of batteries, a slot to a sd card and a tv out but keeping the same design, but improved. I grew up with these retro consoles. I had my 1st gg for my 12th birthday 26 years ago. I’m thinking buying one of these just for my collection.

Wait a second. It uses a vertical or square-shaped phone screen - letterboxed - with black bars on the top and bottom. This is honestly hilarious :D Not that there is anything wrong with that - of course i wouldn't expect to see a custom LCD on a unit like this - and it's much better than using a vertical phone screen, flipping it sideways, and then having diagonal tearing on it because its scanout is then left to right instead of top to bottom :D

how's the battery life compared to the og game gear?

They last for ages. The batteries used in this video were really old used batteries. That's why they ran out in a matter of minutes.

I would have preferred a slightly bigger one with real tiny cartridges. These cartridges could have like 10 games on 'em and they could sell them at kiosks and newsstands... A cartridge with a small booklet with informations and art.

Interesting. So this is Allwinner based. So the emulator is probably the same from the RetroArch Linux one. This is why I bet you can connect it via USB into the PC with that mystery button. But I doubt it would be possible to upload many more games for it. Havent seen any flash chip, so its probably bundled with system. To be honest I was expecting MDoaC (or GoaC) with re-written games. We've seen this stuff before.

Seems like they remade the games for it because the scaling fits the new 240x180 display. It would be very uneven if it ran the original 160x144 software.
