I was in a campaign of this as soon as the playtest came out. Finished a Nyarlwthotep timeline. One of my favorite campaigns I was ever in. Its defibtely one of my favorite uses of Fate. I was also kinda skeptical at first but trusted the GM its defibtely how you describe iy as a slow spiral. Sure, it has the terminator element and it can get very action movie-y like Fate is good at but ultimately you're still doomed as all hell ans always on a slippery slope of corruption so it still WORKS.

Great to see a new video from you Kurt, and I hope you’re doing alright in this Fate of Cthulhu-style world. I ran this last year and really enjoyed my time with it. Evil Hat took the early quarantine times to really ramp up their Roll20 presence and I found their Fate of Cthulhu kits really handy to help play. I’m a fan of this and iHunt which are both Fate but both circumvent Fate doing horror pretty poorly. I’d love an index or book of stunts, especially as one of my players gets total analysis paralysis even when provided with the basic framework of how to make them. I look forward to seeing what you cover next.

I wonder how Fate of Cthulhu compares to Savage Worlds Realms of Cthulhu. I've played SW for a few years now and I know they have a lot of horror elements to the game but it seems to be more of an adventure horror as opposed to true horror. I've started looking at FATE and wondering if it can really handle the grimdark horrors and hopeless situations that I strive for as a GM and look for as a Player.
@knwiegel
@knwiegel 3 жыл бұрын
I know Sean Preston pretty well so I can say this: RoC is OK for the investigative, traditional model we know from CoC, but it can turn action and wild, unpredictable combat from Savage Worlds (48 damage vs a Shoggoth, Tekeli-Li that you plastic bastard), even in gritty mode. Knowing thats a possibility thats awesome for players (and therefore the characters) who know there is hope. for GMs it can be a nightmare. FATE puts a lot of agency in the players hands, which is similar to the exploding dice above. I'm going to catch hell for this, but my issue here is horror, really good horror is based on Helplessness and being really uncomfortable. You have to scare the PLAYERS and make them squirm, and the characters will follow. This is why I have such an issue with the X-card in the table and "drawing veils." No opportunity for players to get uncomfortable. To me that ruins the horror experience.

@@knwiegel If I could give that comment a "heart", I most certainly would. You have nailed the problem that I have found on both sides of the screen. As a SW player, I'm bored with winning all the time. I have spoken with my GM at length trying to figure out ways to make the game harder, Savage Rifts specifically. And yeah, I know that Savage Rifts is pretty much superheroic level characters but they weren't designed that way in the archaic ruleset of the Palladium system, which much like CoC, pitted players against insurmountable odds where direct combat was there but rarely the first option. What I have decided to do, for my character in his game, is only attempt to heal when I have the proper means, whether that be a healing kit or a nearby body fixer. And only soak up to 2 Wounds per attack no matter how high he rolls on his Vigor check. In short, I want that element of danger that has been taken away and if it kills my character in the process, I'm okay with that. As a GM, I am looking for a true horror system that I can easily teach to a group of casual players that don't want to sit down with another 500 page rulebook, like our time spent with SpyCraft 2.0. The problem is, I don't know if that game is even exist. Is there a simple ruleset that brings a level of lethality to the gaming table without requiring extensive study of outdated rules systems or have all modern RPGs been shaped to remove those elements of danger and dropped the player characters into their very own safe space? Is this what younger players are really looking for? Or is this the reason why OSR games are making / have made a comeback?

@@simonebruno7425 Fair enough that's a good point but I just dislike how they went about it other companies mention the authors' racist beliefs and move on. Evil Hat seems to go overboard on how evil the creator was but not to worry as they are angels so can safely use this tainted setting. I still feel if you are so horrified about a creator it's better to use another setting as there are plenty of others out there that don't have this bad baggage.
