This is because I thought for a moment that the Night King is now being "punished" for being too aggressive and obsessed. That is generally how battles go. Someone wins. They took 7 seasons and 2 episodes to get to that point. In any scenario the night king wins, everyone else looses, as he has increased his army by the many thousands killed at winterfell. That means there is no Game Of Thrones. Can you imagine that, they went with your load of toss, and there was no Game Of Thrones at the end of the season, just the night king having a Starbucks latte petting Ghost........ I want to be clear about something: Melisandre telling Arya she would “close blue eyes” back in Season 3 was not foreshadowing Season 8. @@Severian1 10 probably would have been perfect. The whole thing with the Night King needed to be a full season. If that ended up being season 8, it should have included Jon and Daenerys' relationship - their convergence was kinda the point of the series, at least per some things GRRM said way back in the making of the earlier seasons. I think their relationship was supposed to be epic, the thing you'd write songs about... you know, songs of Ice and Fire. Develop Daenerys slipping from rationality into more of an "end justifies the means" attitude... perhaps have her pregnant, as was foreshadowed, then due to something she blames on Cersei, she loses the child and loses her shit. THIS would be believable. Jon almost goes along with her because he's angry, too... but then he comes to his senses, and he can't stop Daenerys... then we get to the end. @@FrayAdjacentTX Exactly. Her snap should have been gradual. A slow burn coupled with a slow rise in the NK's attack. The dead should have torn apart winterfell then down to other castles and cities. The threat that is the WWs must be given weight. As they progress down south Sam, Brienne, Bron, Pod, Theon die raising the stakes whilst Daenerys is loosing her sanity on account of her losing more and more of her army to an enemy she didn't initially plan to face. And then close to Kingslanding Arya with Jon's help kills the NK. Cersei, at a safe distance, attacks shortly afterwards, while they've set-up camp (which gives her something to do beyond standing at windows and drinking wine) to take advantage of her enemy's weariness. Missandei dies here, final straw. Dany snaps. Burns all of the attack force and the people in the city. Jaime sees Cersei in fear and retreating and instinctively helps her. In retreating both burn. Then the Nazi speech by Daenerys, Jon kills her and the Dothraki bloodriders remaining kill him. Or Drogon burns him. Either way a better ending. Or something else just not what they gave us.

I hate all the talk about "...they did not have book material..." It's nonsense, there was tons and tons of book material to use. The fact is, they both strangely either just chose not to utilize relevant material, or purposefully wrote their narrative in ways that rendered great book material unusable in their altered continuity threads... Both decisions were irreparably detrimental to any logical future narrative structure and cemented the impossibility of any sense of reaching satisfying conclusions to either the characters or the plot threads that comprised a world had that so engrossed us in earlier scenes... They get absolutely no pass whatsoever, with the whole "no book material left" hand waving excuse...

BOOK SPOILERS BELOW The thing I am most disappointed about was how they cut out the Young Griff/fAegon plot. He would've made a far more interesting and compelling final villain to Dany in King's Landing than Cersei ever will. And he could've made her "snap into madness" more convincing since he has the better "claim" to the throne and the people of King's Landing would never accept Dany over him. In addition, his presence could've saved the Dorne plot from being a total disaster by making Doran and Arianne ally with him and Varys would have a much greater role to play in the endgame of the series. Varys has been set up as best schemer in Westeros for so many seasons, only rivaled by Littlefinger, but the show completely stripped him of his Blackfyre master plan and dumbed him down just to kill him off easily at the last minute. Even though the books aren't finished, all the seeds and ingredients for a good story were there for the show writers but they ignored it and rushed the series quickly so they could move on. I don’t think Jon coming back from the dead was a reversal of consequences. The show had done a good job of setting up Jon to be the main adversary of the Night King. The way I *THOUGHT* the show was going was to set up Jon being resurrected via the Lord of Light because the God NEEDED Jon alive to be able to defeat the Night King. I would have been 100% okay with Jon actually dying while fighting (but ultimately killing) the Night King. I thought that was his one purpose and once that purpose was fulfilled and he completed his character arc I was fine with him dying. In fact I would have RATHER SEEN JON SNOW DIE LIKE THAT THAN WATCHING HIM ACT LIKE AN IDIOT AND THEN GET SENT TO THE WALL??

The night king should have decimated winterfell and continued on to kings landing, and only a few characters survive. The Night King could have done the same thing to Bran that he did to the baby in season 4. Lost potential. Not to mention Arya could have travelled to King's Landing instead of Winterfell in season 7, and when she gets there Cersei is fighting a war with the people of King's Landing. She sneaks into the castle the same ways that she escaped, remembers the boy she killed (pathos and callbacks done right), and maybe even witness Cersei with Lannister loyalists escape in a boat. Then Danaerys could have arrived at King's Landing and, instead of a battle, she simply sits the throne. This could have been the middle of season 7. Then Cersei is arrested by her own family and offers her to Danaerys at the end of season 7, brought back to King's Landing and is going to be executed publicly as Ned was. Ugh. And I'm just an amateur writer.

She isn't really a mary sue at all. She fails at everything except fighting. She spends months living on the street of kings landing after her father is betrayed. And she isn't successful at this at all. She's surviving on damned pigeons when her father is executed. She gets sold to fight on the wall. She and the other recruits struggle heavily to even survive. She almost dies to small side characters all the time. While helped by extremely powerful teachers. She fails at getting back to her family. She fails at being a faceless.
@catatoblob85984 жыл бұрын
I think what happened to Khal drogo is more of an example of being blind sighted by a low probability event (which, to be fair, has historically happened to a lot of kings during war campaigns) than the status quo for what happens when you don't dress a wound promptly. Also, at least learn to spell Mary Sue, even if you can't get the definition right.
@Loophole237424 жыл бұрын
Haiiry Cake by that argument Rey in Starwars isn't a Mary Sue either. Rey is one of the biggest Mary Sue's in recent history and she struggled on Tatooine until the plot no longer called for it. Even the actress playing Arhya didn't believe that Arhya should have been the one to take down the night king. Arhya didn't start out as a Mary Sue but was turned into one by the time the show ended.

S7 the pack is what is needed, then it's suddenly forgotten again, she goes of to find out what's west of Westeros.. ugh (Rey is too good too fast, but SW is filled with inconsistencies for years... so I don't really care. The kids who watch Rey growing up won't notice these things until later on..but GoT is targeted at a far more mature audience but it turned quite stupid)

I think the best examples of seeing what Game of Thrones began as and what GOT ultimately became was the Battle of the Blackwater and the Battle of Winterfell. During Blackwater, there is fighting but the majority of the episode is about the characters and their struggles dealing with the battle. The Hound realizing he no longer wants to kill and deserts his king. Tyrion rallying the soldiers for a counterattack. They lose all hope, at one point Cersei almost kills her son in order to spare him the pain of being captured. Then at the end, they are saved by Lord Tywin and the Tyrells. The Battle of Winterfell has no character development. At no point in the battle do you truly believe that the battle is lost. Most of the episode is dedicated to the action on the battlefield. Hardly any dialogue. The episode relies almost solely on visuals. It is there to entertain the masses.

@@patwaddington Exactly. Seasons 1-6 are the best. George R.R. Martin was a conscientious objector in the Vietnam War. Nothing wrong with that. But season 7 and especially season 8 seems to be a statement right out of the 60s band song "War". Namely, the song that goes "WAR! HUH! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR! ABSOLUTELY NUTHIN'!" Except that sometimes there ARE "Good Wars" that DO accomplish something good. The Wars of the Roses (Insane kings). The US Civil War (End Slavery). WWII (destroy the Nazis). Just to name a few. The George R.R. Martins of the world have no end of trouble remembering this fact. Until the last two episodes of the series, the various wars (except those by the Lannisters and the Baratheons) WERE Good Wars. Then the writers had to use "Writers' Preference" to turn the sharpest mind in the World of George R.R. Martin into a complete sociopath.

@avdhutjoshi6763 жыл бұрын
Season 6 was when got stopped being got. The Starks were set up as the 'good guys' and at the end of season 5 they were at their lowest point. Jon died, Sansa got married to Ramsay, Arya went blind, Rickon was captured by Ramsay and Bran was absent for the whole season. But in season 6 Jon gets ressurected really early on with no consequences, manages to take back winterfell in an epic battle, wins over the people of the North and gets crowned King in the north. These 2 seasons follow the stereotypical formula of the bad guys having an initial advantage, good guys going through tough times and then eventually beating the bad guys as underdogs.

D&D stepping away from Star Wars is the greatest victory of our time. I only disagree with your point that season 8 would never have been good. The end of season 7 made it difficult, but it was absolutely salvageable. With more episodes and more time to flesh it out, many relevant plot points could still come to a satisfying end. Cersei could have a fitting end, arya and jon could have fitting peaks, the white walkers could have had actual backstory, etc etc. Negligence, incompetence and disrespect for the audience caused this cataclysmic failure. They really thought we were dumb enough to enjoy it. I hope they never write again. A year later and it still pains me.

It kills me that there wasnt a better ending! You're right, so many awesome storylines I needed to see through, didnt get resolved. There were so many loose ends and plotholes. D&D ended it the way they did because they couldnt write the ending. GRRM cant write the ending. And if he cant, no one can. However, I saw lots of fan fiction that was way better than the ending and that was part of the problem. D&D were reading the fan fiction and didnt want any of it to be right. And that limited their options. They shouldnt have read it at all, but I think they were looking for inspiration. It's almost like D&D got pissed off at the fans and sabotaged the ending out of spite. I know they were already getting trashed on youtube before season 8. I just dont see how they could bomb that bad unless they did it on purpose. But the actual blame ought to be placed on GRRM. He was supposed to supply the material and he didnt. And even if he couldnt write the book, he could have written the show. He couldve helped with the dialogue, pointed them in the right direction. He sure as hell wasnt working on WOW. Its dumb af to create a television series on material that has no ending! That's a recipe for disaster. George dropped the ball. Nobody had any idea how to finish this story. But what they could have done was wrap up the story with answers from the books' history, which was there in abundance. That would've satisfied me.
