@@Tamlinearthly Fans aren't mad because "the prophecy wasn't fulfilled". Fans are mad because ALL the setup for this show was thrown in the trash this season. Arya killing the Night King wouldn't have been a problem if there was enough setup for the event. Melisandre saying "you will close brown eyes, green eyes and blue eyes" isn't enough setup. This line wasn't even originally meant to hint that Arya would join the fight agaisnt the dead, when Melisandre said it to Arya the first time a few seasons ago. The writers conveniently reused that line, just like they intentionally hid or discarded other important hints and plot points, for the sake of having this season make some sort of sense.

Let's be honest. There was going to be criticism no matter what the ending was or will be. Imagine Jon and Dany bravely fighting and getting to the wood at the last moment to kill the Night King and save the world. The show is an adaptation of the entire book series, and simply took the name of the first book and stuck with it. The main themes from the books were still very prominent in the show, until they stopped adapting from the books. They also had plenty of war strategists but there plan seems made by a farmer. Arya had been training mainly for her list to kill and never really for wights. The wights jn their final war killed Jorah, Berric and lady mormont who were named or semi influential. And conveniantly killed both Dany's armies but that was not even really the nightkings doing. There is no large loss outside of idiocy and 3 side characters for an enemy that has been there for such a long part of the series. Also instead of having a trap around Bran they had Theon with the iron born. And after that failed the last resort was, Arya running from the castle, into the godswood, to Bran who is surrounded by wights. The nightking and the 12 horsemen of the nightking. That she could sneak up on Jon while he was alone sure.. but charge through an army..

It's disheartening and unsatisfying to had invested so much time and thought into character arcs, narrative, and backstory with these characters for 7 years just for all the rules to get thrown out the window just because they wanted it to be "unexpected".

To be fair, they also wanted it to "look cool". Case in point: the mind-numbingly stupid battle tactic of having your cavalry ride directly into an enemy they can't even see. But gosh, those lights getting snuffed out was cool wasn't it??? And then it gets even worse over the following hour. Just awful, awful writing. Embarrassing. It's like these morons don't understand what makes the books (and the first four or five seasons) so appealing.

It took an extra year because of production, not writing. You also have to keep in mind that whatever they write, HBO gets the final say in everything because they decide what they can pay for, what they'd rather pay for and what they'd rather not bother with. If they wrote quickly, it's because they had to make deadlines so that people could start planning for production which, I'm sure you can imagine, would be crazy amounts of work and very time consuming. Also, remember there are 3 episodes left and it will be easier to judge this episode in the grand scheme of things later.

HBO had a contract with Amazon that when any series finished, Amazon could air it on Prime Video. That contract expired at the end of 2018. So my guess is it wasn’t the more time for writing but the massive amounts of money it would save HBO by not going to Prime.

In LOTR, the urukhai and orcs ravaged the entire land of middle earth. In GoT, the ice-satan was stopped at his homes threshold. This is like if Sauron never got any of his forces and influence past Osgiliath. Maybe the ice wall was never meant to keep walkers in, but people out, from murdering the fragile endangered species of ice-cube-people.

Ah here in fairness Sauron lost at the first major city too, Minas Tirith is basically LotR's Winterfell. Osgiliath would be more like The Last Hearth.

@@wtxcrazydonut Osghiliath is much alrger than minas tirith and was/is the capital of Gondor, Minas Tirith was just the western watch tower and minas Ithil(later renamed to Minas Morgul by Saurons forces) was the eastern watch tower. Minas Tirith was really the last possible place to stop the advance of Saurons forces after Gondor having lost most of its pride over decades with slowly loosing the war and loosing much of their most prosperous lands around Osgiliath. Sauron never being able to take Minas Ithil would be comparable to Winterfell, the battle of Minas Tirith would be more comparable to the Night King being stopped somewhere in the riverlands.
