Aliser Thorne (the guy training people in the Nights Watch) hates Jon Snow because he's Ned Stark's son. Thorne fought for the Mad King during Robert's Rebellion, whereas Stark fought for Robert. Thorne's side lost, and he chose to take the black (join the Nights Watch) as an alternative to being executed. Now that he's got a Stark (even a bastard one) under his control, he's using every opportunity to take his resentment out on Jon.

My husband watched GoT. I said, “meh” - I’m not into fantasy. I made the mistake of intermittently watching a couple of episodes with him… made no sense, he was frustrated because I kept asking questions (“um, sorry, WHO is the king?”) 🤣 It was like him trying to jump into “Downton Abbey” with me. 🤣 I was so annoyed. 5:45 It's not really explained in the show but Ser Alisser Thorne (the training instructor) fought for the Targaryens during Robert's rebellion. He lost everything and was exiled to the wall because of Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. There are a few other reasons, but that is the primary source of animosity.

Khaleesi is her title, it's the same as Queen. Daenerys Storm-born Targaryen is her name. The Knight getting killed and spitting up blood is why you don't eat snacks while watching this show. One thing about this show is it has some of the best series at giving cliff-hangers. Almost every episode has one. George RR Martin is the writer of the books and creator of the Game of Thrones world.

Edard killed Sansa’s dire wolf… she’s still mad about it. She doesn’t see that Cersei actually killed the wolf. It’s hard to remember through the brutality of the show that Sansa is really 13, and she has dreams of being the queen someday like a child believing in fairytales. Her pet being killed by her dad is the worst thing that ever happened to her.

Also, Ned didn't fight very hard. He could've gone all "sigil of my house" on Robert (his bestie) like Jon did to him and insisted on having Stark men take the wolf to Winterfell to be released or bred with the hounds for dire hounds, or released north of the wall. Or just done what Cersei suggested and released the wolf instead of killing her. Ned had a lot more power in the situation than Sansa, arguably the most power second to Robert, but hardly spoke up for his daughter's pet. I'd have blamed him for quite a while if I was her.

Lord Snow is Jon's nickname in the Night's Watch. Sir Alliser Thorne called him like that as an insult, like Lord bastard, as having a Snow surname is not considered as honorable as a family name like Stark. When Catelyn called out all those men in the Inn at the crossroad she made it not as a Stark (by marriage) but as a Tully, her father's name. The Inn was in the Riverlands, the lands of her father, Hoster Tully, and she called all the ones that are vassals of her father to catch Tyrion.

Just an FYI for clarification. 😊 “Khaleesi” is not her name, it’s more of a title, like “Queen.” Her name is Daenerys Targaryen. Her family refer to themselves as “dragons” because their ancestors conquered the seven kingdoms of Westeros hundreds of years ago with three actual dragons, and had ruled there until King Robert usurped the throne from her father.

The map in the intro changes based on where the characters currently are in the story. For these first few episodes, the characters are pretty much staying in the same areas where they started, so you're seeing all the same locations. As characters start to travel to new areas, you'll see the new locations pop up on the map during the intro. It's a good way to get a little preview that we're going to see a new location in that episode or to be able to tell which characters we'll be following in that episode (if you remember where they were located last time you saw them).

- Theon's father is alive. He raised a rebellion and was defeated, then Theon was sent to ward in Winterfell as kind of an insurance policy against further rebellion. If Greyjoy rebels again, Theon is in the danger zone. However, Theon is treated well by the Starks, clearly, and is more of brother to the boys than a prisoner. - As for Sam, he wouldn't be hunted, they would go out on the pretext of going hunting, and he would make the horse throw him and they'd abandon him in the woods to die.

John Snow, from the north has the surname Snow. Bastards from the Reach are named Flowers. The name is based on the region where they were born. Those in Kings Landing, where the king and queen live, and Robert Baratheon's bastard, the armorer kid's surname is Waters.

I highly recommend watching all of the behind the scenes, "making of", GOT mini-documentaries after you finish the series. Each one focuses on a different aspect of the production. For example, the one on costumes shows you the stunning details involved. Another tells the fascinating story behind the creation of the Dothroki language. They certainly upped my already great appreciation of the thought and work that went into this iconic series.

Greetings Amber The "4 Animals" in the opening credits are the emblems (sigil; coat of arms; crests) of the monarchy families in the kingdom. Of course, you should already know the Direwolf for House of Stark. The "deer" is actually a 'Stag' for House of Baratheon. The Lion for House of Lannister. the dragon for House of Targaryen. Yes, the map gives the other emblems for the other 'Houses' in the Realm. The "stick' is called a 'jousting lance' or just a "lance'. Yes, the point of jousting is to knock opponent of the horse, bust sometimes as the lance broke, the 'splinters' would jab in the neck or other places, such as in this example.

About the sigils at the beginning you were noticing: it's a Stag for House Baratheon (the king), Lion for the Lannisters, Direwolf for the Starks, and a Dragon for the Targaryens (Dany and her brother and the previous mad king). There will gradually be changes to the map, but not every episode! :)

The map changes only when things change in the story or a new city/state is introduced, the symbols in the intro represent the 4 major houses in the story, Direwolf/Starks, Lion/ Lannisters, Stag/Baratheons & Dragons/Targaryen. Tribes that travel with no permanent home are called Nomads, Dothraki are Nomadic but have a capital used for ceremonial purposes. Only children of Illegitimate nobles get Surnames depending where they come from; North/Snow, Iron Islands/Pyke, Westerlands/Hill, Vale/Stone, Dorne/Sand, Stormlands/Storm, Dorne/ Sand, Riverlands/Rivers, Reach/Flowers & Crownlands/Waters. So Jon Snow is an illegitimate child of a Northern noble, Mary Rivers would be an illegitimate child of a Riverland noble.

Viserys Targaryen calls himself "The Dragon" because historically, Targaryens were dragon-riders, so it's an honorific that was oftne applied to them. he also uses it as a euphemism for threatening and hitting Dany "you don't wan't to wake The Dragon, do you?". Note that his sister's name is Daenerys: "Khalisi" is a title, equivalent to "Queen".

The idea of a joust is to knock off the opposing rider to win the horse. However, points can be earned for striking your opponent either on the chest or helmet. Accidents did happen, death wasn't the goal. A king of France was killed after a joust because he got splinters in his eyes

As you can see Samwell Tarly is far from a fighter or warrior, while his father, Randyll Tarly is the complete opposite and once defeated the current King, Robert Baratheon and his army on the battlefield. Sam's father is a real hardass, as you already noticed when Sam told about the reason he was sent to the Night's Watch. You'll see him a few seasons later.
