It is Michelle 's brilliant acting that makes this scene aching even more for audience. I honestly believe she could end the tragedy when she rose up so bravely. After that, seeing her throat cut anyway made it even more tragic.

+Horace Warfield Just because something is someone's fault, it doesn't mean they deserve...this. Catelyn is an amazing character and gets way too much hate from the fanbase. Her chapters in the books really prove this. She's more human than anyone else and she acts on a mix of emotion and reason. She goes through a lot and loses a lot, and she's just a very well written character.

Lord Tywin, who ordered Robb be executed with crossbows, shot by a crossbow in his own house. Roose Bolton, a sworn bannermen to the stark who betrayed Robb and murdered him, betrayed and murdered by his own son. One thing you have to give George RR Martin and the TV writers(more the TV as Robb married more for honor than love in the book) credit for is that they don't buy into cliches. In fiction one of the greatest cliches is that love will conquer all. You can make the most moronic decisions...but because you do it for love you will be rewarded. This show illustrates...if you make a bad decision even if it is for love it will have consequences.

I would have believed in the notion of no happy ending if they killed Arya. The show would have ended for most people. The entire show is built on 4 characters. Daenarys, Jon, Arya and Sansa. None of these 4 will die a senseless death if HBO wants to keep their fans and gain more fans even after the series is done. Everything revolves around the Starks and Daenarys.The entire plot with Kingslanding and the Sparrows was a total failure. Kingslanding lost value when Sansa and Tyrion left. Tomon was boring.Daenarys and Mereen, Sansa and the Boltons, Jon and the Wildling made the season interesting.

We look at Lord of the Rings as a "heroes are going to win" thing in retrospect. Most people are spoiled by the movies and LotR already being ingrained in pop-culture before they got into it. But there was plenty of unexpected and unpredictable moments in LotR. Boromir's death, the fall of Gandalf, scourging of the Shire, Arwen and Aragorn's doomed romance, how enduring the pain of the Morgul blade and bearing the Ring was so much for Frodo that he had to leave his loved ones behind to sail for the Undying Lands, and how for a good chunk of the books you're convinced Frodo really is dead from Shelob and the job lies solely on Sam. The passage of Sam thinking Frodo is dead and taking up the Ring himself is more heartbreaking than anything in GoT, not to talk down on GoT. Then there's the works outside of the main LotR books, the Shakespearean tragedies of the Sil and Unfinished Tales and specifically Children of Hurin which out Game of Thrones GoT decades before it existed. Incest, murder, betrayal, torture, the bad guys always getting the upperhand, the complete downfall of the main character and his entire family. It's such a depressing book that I don't really have the desire to ever read it again. So I think Tolkien is owed a little more respect than he's given as far as the topic is concerned. While the heroes did win in LotR, it didn't come without great cost and sacrifice.
@TheExiledTexan8 жыл бұрын
+leftyfourguns Preach it. Silmarillion is savage as fuck. The Noldor are a vicious, savage bunch whose decisions at times are almost as evil as those of the antagonists. The people who think Tolkien's stories are simple "good vs evil" tales have clearly not read enough Tolkien.

Spoke with my dad how the ring corrupts people and he tried to prove a point that Smeagol was weak and vicious. I told him that Frodo was just as weak as Smeagol, it's pretty horrifying but at mt doom, everything was honestly lost. Right there, Frodo decided to keep the ring and he woulda gotten away if not for Gollum. In that sense Frodo is no different from Gollum. The ring is a craving

The books 3 contains so many clues about the Red wedding. Right from the start of Book 3 you get the feeling that something something is going to happen but you can't seem to put your finger on it until it happens. Lord Tywin says this on multiple situations - "some wars are won with swords, others with quills and ravens”. He says to Tyrion that he is planning something and he wants to tell it to him but he won't. Everyone starts behaving like Robb was out of the picture. Tyrion was wed to Sansa. Tywin even says "you let me worry about Robb". Roose Bolton starts calling himself King in the North. and even after Robb betrays Walder Frey, he is too polite to Robb and willing to forget everything, Catelyn is suspicious about this but doesn't say anything. Roose Bolton sends Jaime to Kings Landing and advising Brienne to forget about the Starks. The whole books has an eerie feeling to it like something's going to happen just around the next chapter. This thing was not captured in the show.

I am so glad they gave him so much screen time in the show, you really saw it as a main story arc that was going to continue on and on. I remember thinking 'now the whole army is dead where do they go from here?' The TV series made Robb and Catlyn bigger characters than they were in the books. As Mr. Benioff said, there was no Robb point of view in the books, and Catlyn didn't that many chapters compared to other characters. Also, the character Talisa was completely made up to replace Jeyne Westerling, who had about one line in the books. So the producers of the show obviosly tried to create more of an attachment to those characters, so viewers would be shocked and heartbroken when this happened. It obviously worked lol.

I was very young when I watched this and this scene give me a shock and a hookup moment that make me realize that this is not just an ordinary show, and it lead to me find and read the book because I'm so intrigued with its compelling story. Another thing that makes the red wedding become an iconic moment of the whole GOT series is the brilliant performance of Michelle Fairley, which builds up emotional tenses that you know that something not good is going to happen.

@lpallad19 жыл бұрын
Spartacus and Guy Fawkes should be considered evil, considering that they have lost. But history gives them an image rather positive.

***** I see your point. Thought correct me if I am wrong but: every 5th of November the british burn images of fawkes on the stake, dont they?
@lpallad19 жыл бұрын
kvothe343 it's true. Because the tradition says this. But it does not change that people now consider Guy Fawkes as a symbol of freedom and rebellion against oppression. Just consider at V for Vendetta.
@kvothe3439 жыл бұрын
Touché. Where did we start again? Something with Game of thrones or so?
@lpallad19 жыл бұрын
kvothe343 Yes. V for Vendetta is not Game of Thrones. But the point is not that story in itself. But why Alan Moore in the real life has wanted that the protagonist of the his story wear the mask with the face of Guy Fawkes.

Just read this part in the books and came here immediately. Whatever you can say about season 8 - they translated this to screen brilliantly. I only wish they had included Catelyn losing her mind and scratching her cheeks bloody.

I remember that after i finished the chapter with the Red Wedding there was good 10 minutes in which i just stared at the wall across the room, not muttering a single word to my mother who tried to get my attention for something, not answering my phone which rang for almost a minute, just starring silently at the wall, thinking "WTF just happened" ...

I watched Game of Thrones before I read the books. It was after the red Wedding episode that I started reading the books and this part of the book is truly the most heart and gut wrenching for me. And while good doesn't always win over evil in this particular story, I still hope it does as we are getting to the end of season 6 and to the end of the series.

But Robb did the exact opposite to what his family usually do to get to this ending. He chose love over the honour of keeping his oath of marrying a Frey girl. Not so bad keeping honour after all.
@amarpatel9610 жыл бұрын
Mil A hmmm in the show ya! But in the book, he didn't love her, she was just some girl he had a one night stand with when he received the news of Winterfell's demise. He married her so as not to mar her honor.
@lpallad19 жыл бұрын
Mil A Technically Robb is not the only character into a fantasy that must marry someone for political reasons, but then married someone else for love. Is only the first character at whom happens these consequences.

We also need to take note the George R. R. Martin is a part of the creation of the TV series, the correspond with him and check that he is happy with any changes, so if he thinks it is alright, then it should be it is HIS story after all. And yes I have read all the books so far.

Lol. Yup. I'm re watching the shows on HBO GO now... And I'm more impressed now after reading the all the books. Yes they changed Alot of stuff but they got the essence of everything (mostly) and made it easier to digest while still keeping the essence of many great moments... They gave Grey Wind a cheap death!! Like they just shot him with arrows, in the book Grey Wind goes absolutely buckwild and kills like 4 kennel dogs and rips the arm of the kennelmaster before they put him down. In the books Grey Wind connection to Robb is much stronger and he even in a sense warns Robb to not trust the Freys when they first get to the Twins. :(
