Can't help but admire the haunting visual beauty of the wedding scene with those little lights flickering on the snow. It's mesmerizing in its eerie silence. Winterfell with its desolate castle feels like a dystopian fairytale inverted on its head right now. I'm a sucker for ambiences and in a different situation the surroundings would almost come off like a heavenly, blissful winter wonderland. But here it's a reminder of the gloom and despair. It's like a wedding in the upside down.

This is the episode where Senator Claire McCaskill had a viral tweet saying she is done with the show over the sex-ual violence. Lotta people said that tho no one actually followed through. But yup this episode created a lot of controversy even back then. This will probably not be made today. If Theon conveniently snapped out of it right there and jumped in before they could show him establishing a real connection with Sansa, or if Sansa who's never even killed a fly pulled out a hidden pocket knife to slash Ramsay, then it would be any other show but not thrones.

The ending overshadows everything in this episode but that scene where Margaery is pleading with Tommen while he's looking around helplessly? Man oh man, that infuriates me to no end. Tommen is such a brilliant character because of how utterly incompetent he is. He's so worthless he makes you wish Joffrey was back, that's an accomplishment in itself. The contrast of the one king who'll kill you for looking at him the wrong way and the other who'll do nothing. The choice ends up being not that simple! If Tywin was around to groom him it probably would've been different. But stuck between an impulsive mother and the passion of the mob, he's nothing more than a prisoner with a crown. Tommen's a reminder that gentleness is an overvalued trait in the medieval ruler. The interactions between Cersei High Sparrow Tommen Margaery Olenna are some of my favorite moments of the season. High Sparrow in particular has some thought provoking dialogue.

At the core of Baelish's plan was the prospect of the historical alliance of the Vale and North that once took down the "greatest dynasty the world's ever seen". It gave Baelish the flexibility to move against the Lannisters in tandem with the North, but also against a depleted Stannis or Bolton if it came to that since he still had Cersei's ear. Plus it's clearly implied Baelish hoped Sansa would eventually wear the pants in the marriage and Baelish could then rule the North by proxy. But Ramsay being a monstrous sadist threw a wrench in everything. The one fatal mistake in the plan was him overestimating how much control Roose had on his son. Some of the worm for brains fans need to be spoonfed everything.

"We both peddle fantasies Brother Lancel. Mine just happen to be entertaining" - That's always been one of my favorite lines. LF on his 4d chess again, promised Roose an alliance against the Lannister Crown and promised Cersei the Lion will fly over Winterfell. If Boltons win he can revive the old North-Vale alliance to go against the Lannisters. If Stannis wins he can use the Crown to go against a weakened Stannis. Whoever takes the North, whether Bolton Stannis or Cersei, LF would be in a key position to make the next play. He's frontrunning like a mf, promising everything to everyone. Watching him be this manipulative for this long is as disgusting as it is impressive. But there's the saying about having your hands in too many jars. This can all blow up in his face.

It sets up so many things and leaves you twisting in the wind. The developments in both the North and South threw curveballs at you. Speaking of incoming curveballs...🤐

I'm always taken aback by how dark and depressing this episode is. The filming of Winterfell feels suffocatingly dark. Even the Arya and Loras inquest scenes feel cold and morbid. The snowed out monochrome scenery of the wedding is beyond disheartening. Looks straight out of some enchanting nightmare winter in the middle of nowhere. It's spirit breaking bleakness. The camera does a great job of highlighting a fog of dread hanging over the Bolton North. The dismal suspense that shrouds every step of this episode is right down my alley. It woulda been better off if they left out the Dorne bit which looks comical sandwiched between such dark content.
