I love the later scene when Brienne and Sandor are discussing Arya. Sandor asks, "Who's protecting her if you're here?" and Brienne replies, "The only one needs protecting is one who gets in her way".

Brienne was one of my favorites in the show. While she always started with honorable swordplay, she could always adapt very quickly to any opponent and face them on their level. This earned her Jamie's respect, who looked down on everyone. She beat the hound by becoming just as ruthless as him. And in this scene she quickly realized that aria was not going to be child's play. She probably could have saved her lords and ladies if such underhanded tactics weren't used to kill them.
@fwobebe5164 Жыл бұрын
Well said. ^^ She fights with honor, but when things get crazy, she can go berserker, like with The Hound fight. Using dirty underhanded tricks is not her style, so opponents like Arya and Bronne would a pain in the ass for Brienne to fight, since her knightly honor demands a clean fight at first. But when she gets mad, she can put most her opponents on their ass.

That last one is even more incredible, because it was foreshadowing for her showdown with the Night King. Against the Night King, she dropped her dagger ever so subtly, just enough to make it seem she lost her grip from getting countered. Night King registers the falling blade, but does not quire expect Arya to actually retrieve the dagger with her other hand. Such brilliantly crafted moments.

The thing that I adore about this scene is that it depicts two formidable female warriors with two diverse fighting styles. Too often writers are lazy and simply copy paste what they find when they google "strong woman". Brienne is an imposing, powerfully built woman who is uniquely built for a more strength-based fighting style with heavier weapons and armor. But not many women are built like Brienne. So instead, we have Arya who, while athletic, has a very petite build. She simple cannot match Brienne in strength or size. She (and the writers) are intelligent enough to understand this limitation, so instead she utilizes a more nimble and precise fighting style with lighter weapons and lighter armor. Simply put, not every woman has to "fight like a man" to be formidable.

I think the people criticising this scene saying that it was unrealistic aren't giving Brienne enough credit. Brienne spent her life training and fighting against the same type of warriors her entire life. She knows how to fight pretty and how to fight dirty, but ultimately her opponents were the same kind of fighters. Arya's fighting style is unpredictable in every way. It combines the water dancing she learned from Syrio Forel, the dirty tactics of the Hound, and the deception of the Faceless Men. From the get go, any fighter would be completely disadvantaged in this fight against Arya. Just like Brienne, they would underestimate her and be instantly overwhelmed by her unknown fighting style. Ask any martial artist or duellist how difficult and jarring it is to have to fight against someone who uses a different style, a different weapon, while also being ambidextrous, AND not having any of this information beforehand. Despite all of that, Brienne managed to adapt to Arya's fighting style after LESS THAN A MINUTE OF SPARRING. The people hating on Arya saying she's now the best warrior in Westeros for no reason don't stop to think that she was practically cheating for the first half of this fight, and Brienne still managed to overpower her in the end.

That's true. In the books it does say that the faceless men made their kills look like accidents so as not arouse suspicion but I think it depends on how politically charged their target is. If they kill enough high ranking people without making it look like an accident then eventually that will lead a lot of people to sending knights and free riders to the house of black and white to seek revenge. As per usual, D&D went with flash over substance with Arya. They cared more about turning her into tv friendly badass than a ninja assassin. I think Arya in the books is learning to be more subtle with her kills.

I dont know about the books or anything. But every training begins at something. How would they train to kill someone if they cant even defend themselves? You cant just train to kill someone and expect it will always go smoothly. 😁

My favorite thing about this scene is that Brienne initially assumes Arya is some spoiled twat trying to indulge in fantasies. Then she immediately realizes that Arya is a highly capable fight and you can see it quickly sink in that she did the same thing she always hated men for doing, assuming a girl would never be able to fight. Then you can see the immediate respect she shows by not holding back.

Love how sansa's shocking facial expression when arya fought like a boss.I am really sorry for Sansa.Her all siblings are best characters in this show.I felt useless as if i was Sansa Stark.

I have watched this scene many times, and I believe this was the best fighting scene in the whole series.

I really love this fight and dialogue. So nice to see Arya in her element with joy to fight a duel and show what she is able to do.

It's a lot more poetic of a character arc for sansa to be littlefingers undoing. Sansa and Littlefinger actually have mirrored character arcs, littlefinger is just a lot further along in his. The TV show of course might go in a different direction with it, but it's what i'm expecting

Even the most subtle things in this show are always done with intention. There are always so many callbacks and they are always designed with purpose. No doubt that was exactly the specific purpose of that back then even if we hadn't known it at the time.
