Season 1-6 of has always been about these long, epic journeys from place to place, which is where a load of character development happens, and twists and turns derail characters along the way. But after six years of that, D and D realized it was running out of time because of this self-imposed deadline, and suddenly everyone is warping all around the map instantly, erasing that entire part of the show that was a key aspect of it before. This results in some plot holes, but also a general sense of disorientation and like everything is moving at breakneck speed. And usually, this is done in service of just hammering us with battle after battle, with maybe one episode of downtime in between them. It’s felt exhausting, and like the show is trying to sprint its way through a marathon, losing steam far before it should. It is easy to see how the last 13 episodes of the series could have been 20-30 episodes if the showrunners had decided to take their time, taking an unlimited budget from HBO, respecting the opinion of the series creator, and doing service to fans who would loyally show up for a decade or more if asked. Instead, they wanted to be done, and rather than leave and hand the show off to someone who actually wanted to be there, they’re just blasting through it, and clearly, it’s suffering as a result.

Imagine if "Avatar: The Last Airbender" ended like Game of Thrones Ozai is defeated by Sokka halfway through the final season. Aang never actually uses the other elements for anything and just stands around uselessly. Zuko then declares that he never cared about his honor, abandons team Avatar and goes back to join Azula, then they both get killed by falling bricks. Toph completely forgets about metal bending and never uses it again despite plenty of situations where it would've obviously been useful. All the Airbenders are inexplicably back for the final battle despite all being dead. Katara goes crazy and destroys Ba Sing Se before being killed by Aang. Momo then becomes the new Firelord. Then the show ends with Aang just walking off and going back into the iceberg. What a let-down.

I have recently rewatched (most of) the show; even all these years later, I can’t bear to sit through season 7 and 8. Season 5 and 6 are rough, but still feel like GOT at least. ​@@YouScareMe1 I can’t speak for them, however Season 5 is where the writers wanted to make GoT their own story and started ignoring book 4 and book 5. That in itself does not have to be a bad thing, however they truly failed with certain characters and stories even only within the context of the show. The Dorne storyline did not introduce any remotely compelling characters. They were all one dimensional, and somehow Ellaria and the Sandsnakes tried to avenge Oberyn by killing his entire family, which doesn't make sense at all. Oberyn literally died avenging his own blood. In addition Jaime's character was very stagnant, so was Tyrion's (in Season 5 and 6). Sansa's plot was just straight up awful, absolutely nothing that happened helped further her character development. Just suddenly from Season 6 on she is all politically savvy although she was just basically locked in a cage throughout all of Season 5? Feels unrealistic. Arya's facelessmen arc was also incredibly illogical so many times, she just has insane plot armor and is uselessly being beaten by her mentors all the time, so the Faceless Men just seem ridiculous compared to their book counterpart. Then she assassinates an entire house and the show narrative treats her like a hero for it. Nobody questions it although many of the Freys were not complicit in the Red Wedding and it was a bigger house after all. Then Cersei doesn't face any consequences for blowing up the Sept which is a religious centre in Westeros + she also killed many important people in there. The episode was amazing and Cersei's character was at least somewhat well written compared to many other characters, but well the aftermath was kind of not there. At least Margaery was a consistently great character. Brienne is just poorly written in my opinion. I could go into detail but I don't wanna make it too long. If you wanna know more, especially how things are handled in the books, let me know
