Theon's arc also seems to mirror the theme of resurrection in the Drowned God's religion. Theon is "killed" by Ramsay, only to be "reborn" once free. And, as we see in the final episode of Season 7, Theon is absolved by Jon, and appears to be stronger (both physically and morally) than he was before his capture. After his torture, he rises again, harder and stronger than he was in the earlier seasons. Yes, he falters and stumbles, but he is stronger nonetheless. The Greyjoys may not sow, but this show totally does!

In the Histories & Lore features of the Blu-Rays, other characters also point out the Ironborn tendency to become so drunk on their perceived sense of superiority that they fail to understand simple concepts, which usually lead to their defeat.

darkstar6909 Prince Doran (wheelchair man in Dorne) was a peacekeeper in the books, a ruler sitting atop a beehive of people upset at the death of Prince Oberyn (the Red Viper). He has a daughter who feels she is lesser in her father's eyes because he keeps presenting her with disgusting suitors, though he never forces her to accept one (which is another reason he's regarded a weak ruler, an image he cultivates). In defiance she convinces Myrcella's Kingsguard protector to let her take the girl and put a crown on her head, presenting her to Westeros as a contender for the Iron Throne. She is betrayed, Myrcella is badly hurt (though not killed at this point), and Ser Oakenshield dies valiantly trying to protect his 2 princesses. When finally brought before her father this younger Martell is given his reasoning for trying to appear weak: he has been conspiring to undermine Baratheon rule since his sister Elia's death. She was presented with old, fat, lame suitors that she would reject to keep up appearances, as she and her brother (the boy who showrd up with his friends on Daenerys' doorstep and stupidly tried to approach the dragons beneath the pyramid) were betrothed to the remaining Targaryens. Even as far as Book 5, the Sand Snakes have only ever been a dangerous nuisance, not a power on their own.

Jaime gave the most accurate, honest description. Their king (Balon) scolded Theon for buying a golden chain instead of stealing it (Theon could just lie, but he was never a great thinker, neither are ironborn though). Rebirth. Theon pays the "iron price" with Ramsey and "dies" now that he is dead as Theon Greyjoy he is reborn as Reek. When he is about to be killed by Euron he runs away, because is pride as Theon is dead and what is dead may never die. The Greyjoys themselves die and are reborn by the hardship of their constant conflict. The Greyjoys who fight in roberts rebellion die off because they sought confict, and they are forged like iron by the "impurities" being killed off in the family line. Theon represents the ways of the drowned god (for the reasons listed above) and Euron represents the storm god. Euron gains strength from destroying and Theon gains strength from being destroyed. Similar to how the ocean becomes for fearsome when acted upon.

I hate the guy standing in front of Theon in this scene. They know what they are about to do and he's just laughing this off. Personally Theon is my third favorite character after Jon and then Robb. Ever since he was being belittled by his father for his clothes bought by Stark gold I've always gravitated to his story because he just wanted to be a good commander. Yes, he did some terrible things but everyone has done terrible things in this story... EVERY character has. Even when I saw him showing the dead farm boys as Bran and Rickon I didn't believe he could do that. I really want to believe he will have a redefining moment when he rescues Yara (I didn't think that fighting one of his bannermen was all that of a redefining moment as it just felt too quick from the point that he made his mind that he was going to right his wrongs) and somehow he'll regrow his member.

Also the Ironborn are fucking bad ass as drowning terrifies the fuck out of me. I can deal with any other form of death but being suffocated in something so nurturing for the world and how it envelopes you as you sink is just as truly terrifying thing to think of. BTW im not afraid of swimming or water in anyway, just the drowning part.
