This episode was really a tough emotional rollercoaster for me aswell. Watching shireen get burned alive was so atricious that you almost had to look away and yet a couple of minutes later, i literally find myself holding on to the chair with my mouth left open by the epicness of danny flying away with drogon.

I kind of understand why Dany had to fly Drogon out of Mereen because her first priority was to protect her child who was badly injured and about to die at the hands of the Harpy's so thats why she left her trusted advisors behind knowing they can take care of them selfs, because dragon demolished most of the Harpy's. That moment when Dany looked into the eyes of Drogon and reconnect with her child i teared up a little bit, it was so emotional and when she took of with dragon thats when i knew she wasn't Helpless at defending herself as long as she has her Dragons by her side thats why she's called the MOTHER OF DRAGONS. so next time you harpy shits want to fuck with her you better damn well have a backup plan because your definitely going o be fucking roasted alive! Legion Normandy Because in the show Stannis orders it. In the books Stannis is close to Winterfell, while Shireen is at the Wall with Melisandre and Selyse, so I would assume Melisandre burns her behind his back. Stannis won't command it nor approve of it. "I'll have no more burnings. Pray harder."

UndeadSon I sill don't get how it's D&D's fault, though. If it is so inconsistent and different from the books, to the point it is seen as some sort of disgrace to the source material, GRRM would have not allowed them to do it. Even if you want to argue he did it despite him not liking it, the fault still lies on him. GRRM approves this sort of thing, and has stated it was his idea to kill Shireen. I don't see how D&D have done anything wrong on their end.

Overall I'm not going to get mad at D&D or GRRM, I try not to think about things in the show that arent actually in the show. As an aside, it is interesting (not just on your video, but other reaction vids as well) how in the same show folks can go from horror and disgust over Shireen getting burned alive to cheering and saluting Drogon burning alive the Sons of the Harpy.

However, Melisandre and Shireen are both at Castle Black while Stannis is at Winterfell. In my thinking, Melisandre and Stannis's wife will sacrifice Shireen behind Stannis's back.

Russ Franz and yet he says a bunch of things in a dance with dragons and the winds of winter chapter that has been released that indicate he would not burn his own child. 1. telling his officers that even if he dies in the battle of winterfell, his sell swords will be waiting in braavos, and that if he dies then his officers are to put his daughter on the throne. 2. when encamped outside winterfell in a snow storm he says that there will be no burnings. the thing that is likely to happen in the books is that selyse and melisandre or just mel will burn shireen without stannis' permission, because shireen, selyse and melisandre are a hundred or more miles away from stannis.

kingjamie2 You're not wrong. It's always vague and complicated in the books. In fact, book-Stannis may yet earn the redeeming act for fans who are still hoping him to be just, in the end. However, for show-Stannis, it is not far from the possibility, that when pushed into a desperate situation (as that whole sequence in the beginning of ep.9 was trying to portrayed), for him to do that difficult decision, to burn Shireen. Since this might be spoiler for Talkin Thrones, I refer you to the end of Jon and Alys Karkstark conversation or warning, when they met at Castle Black.

raider968 I know. And in the books, Martin will fulfill what he foreshadows for Stannis (good and bad). I don't like it anymore than you do, in fact, I doubt Shireen will be burned with his consent, but rather stealthily by Selyse. But Stannis will make more sacrifices (if Mel were to be near him--which she now is distracted by the true AAR, Jon) when he will be in more detailed and dire straits set up by Martin. Winterfell is still in the North. Assuming he will win in the battle for Winterfell (which I personally believe), his ultimate test will be fAegon, and he will lose, to pave way for Dance 2.0 to happen when Dany crosses the narrow sea, if he survives that long.

Stannis HAD to kill his brother, that shouldn't be held against him. Renly declared himself king when the throne was to legally pass to Stannis. Even Ned Stark said Stannis was to take the throne, & besides, Renly was planning on killing Stannis along with his family, THEN turn to Kings Landing. He had no choice. Here, on the other hand, I think the show runners butchered his character because him choosing to do this makes no sense considering how much they built him up to be this great father all season. They said George Martin told them this happens in the book but it is impossible that it happens like this. If it will happen in the books, it'll be under a completely different context.

I've hardly cared about Dany in the books or show, but the scene where she first walks up to Drogon made me sob like an infant even while watching this scene again. The music is what does it for me, and after hearing the track that will be played at the end of the next episode it sounds even more emotional. (Throne for the game)

I just discovered this channel and watched the last two group reactions, these are very entertaining and also it's great to sort of refresh an episode with your reactions underlining it, keep it up! :) While watching the episode myself I was so terrified by the Shireen scene, it completely shattered my mind. I can see myself in the one fella (I think it's Nahid?) just shaking my head and hand in front of the mouth for a long while after the scene was done. "Stannis is pure iron, black and hard and strong, yes, but brittle, the way iron gets. He'll break before he bends." - Donal Noye. It will be a break of the final kind. Goodbye Stannis the Mannis. People may argue that he did the right thing for the long run and yes, maybe he did, but there's no sympathy for a man who burns his own daughter alive. Just no. I almost couldn't enjoy the tremendous ending to the episode, which had its flaws, but was after all just so badass and satisfying that I don't even care about logical stuff anymore, skip that, she's riding the DRAGON for God's sake! :) Counting the days down for the season finale. And waiting for your group discussion meanwhile.

About the Unsullied sucking at that combat, Ser Barristan say in the books that they are no guards. They don't have the eyes to notice stealthy approaches. They don't have the training to know how to react to that kind of battle. They are soldiers that get into perfect formations and clash against the enemy and make even huge Dothraki armies look like they have never seen combat, as they fight bravely, with no fear and with awesome technique. Letting Unsullied as guards often concerns Ser Barristan in the books, but in the TV show HE IS FUCKING DEAD!

About the unsullied, their true strenght is shown in war, they're meant to be used in large numbers and in open battle field. Their discipline and order during battle is what makes them dangerous, basically they're like roman soldiers. They are not meant to be bodyguards or law enforcement agents.

When people complain that the Unsullied were shit at fighitng in Meereen, its because of where they're fighting and what weapons they are using. In tight places like alleys their spears are useless as they are designed to kill from a distance not right up close with the enemy. In the stands of the fighting pit again spears aren't ideal either, with so many people running and climbing to get away from the Harpy's. Plus another big point the Unsullied weren't fighting in formation, they were strung out in thin lines or in a very tight circle with Daenerys and co in the middle. When used in the right circumstances the Unsullied are deadly.

How book Stannis diverges from this is beyond me... Either DnD were faithful to GRRM's end game and GRRM has a lot of plot making to make this character progression natural, or DnD are embellishing her fate by assigning Stannis as the direct cause. I'm not upset Shireen died. Her death is pretty much inevitable. But under Stannis's command for victory against the Boltons, I doubt. TWOW quote had him half expecting his death and setting up and setting up an advanced directive to seat Shireen on the throne in such an event, meaning he's willing to die rather than sacrifice Shireen. Why would he suddenly change his mind if he survives? Why not guarantee his victory from the get go, prevent his men dwindling, and sacrifice her right away? It's inconsistent. I would've rather they killed Stannis then, than bastardize his character worse than ever. They already made it so that it was Mel's word that he went North, not Davos'; they also cut one of his best sentences I was trying to win the throne to save the kingdom, when I should have been trying to save the kingdom to win the throne a realization he attributes to Davos, not Mel; I don't even want to mention D&D making him a fanatic either, burning his people for mere heresy [Shireen's uncle wasn't burned in the books for believing in the Seven, but for making a deal with the Lannisters to marry off Shireen to Tommen]. I knew something was up when they were suddenly giving him likeable scenes only this season, not to mention, far greater numbers in his army. This is worse than Barristan's death for me. Like I said, Shireen's sacrifice is expected, but not with Stannis's permission. The only way I see him giving permission is to save the realm from the Others, the White Walkers, not to win against humans.

I think this scene would have worked better if Stannis and his forces were in mortal danger of running out of supplies with no way back to Castle Black and no way forward to Winterfell. Soldiers frozen bodies stacked like wood and those surviving suffering from cold related injury (frostbite, ears and noses falling off ala Stalingrad) It would at least give some reasoning for such a break in character. When faced with annihilation from the storm (himself, his wife and daughter included) The Red Woman would offer a way out. Desperation makes people do horrible things. Just my take.
