you can tell if a character is suddenly lifted above the plot by their sudden shift to monotony I don't just mean in the sense they become boring characters, but also in their voice just losing all pitch Arya becomes monster assassin, loses all pitch Jon Snow is resurrected, loses all pitch Sansa reclaims Winterfell, loses all pitch Brann becomes the 3 eyed raven, loses all pitch and it's dumb it's not like Jaqen (spelling?) had no pitch or emotions or facial expressions it's not like the 3 eyed raven spoke in a boring monotonous tone the whole time, or at all you know? fuck

Brieanne would have legit mopped the floor with Aria. Brianne is bigger, stronger, has armor, more experienced and, as the Hound says, "Has a big f-ng sword." That was fan service.

I can fill in the gaps for all of your complains with my brain. That's not the problem. The problem is that I shouldn't have to. I'll say Sansa is the one that makes the most sense. She has been in the company of a master manipulator for a long ass time and after all the trauma, she got colder and more calculating. Arya's storyline is not so far from the book's storyline. I think the showrunners knew where to go but not how to get there. I'm pretty sure that's George's fault. I don't find it as far fetched in a story with tons of magical elements maybe just more poorly handled. I'm sure Arya was aware Little Finger was after her ass she just allowed him to believe he was being sneaky. Had they revealed Arya knew and was playing him would have been better but the showrunners are addicted to shocking audiences. Bran is useless until he is??? Behind the scenes? Who cares. I really hope he is the key to flesh out the white walkers and make them more than a generic villain. Jon is the dumbest character in the show by far. IDK how he is still alive. Him and Dany? Two unstable idiots together? Great. At least Dany has more brains. Tyrion is my biggest complaint. He fucking nuked a fleet of ships with medieval technology and trapped them. He is the most capable character and yet he has been in the background being an advisor???? He deserves a position of power more than any other character in the show. ps: The books have gotten bad too. George seems to have become just as aimless as the showrunners. DwD was hard to finish. Tyrion is also a fucking pushover in the books at this point and he never lived up to his potential. Of course that's perfectly possible as development but it's also boring AF. I hope he actually gets to dominate the fucking Dragons and really changes the balance of power in the world. He should be the one to finish off the white walkers.

They didn't make Sansa more competent, they made everyone else less competent to make her seem smarter in comparison. It made no sense why armorers who spent their lives making armor in the North wouldn't know that they should pad the armors to make them warm.
@NowhereMan7
@NowhereMan7 5 жыл бұрын
and they could have had another seen like the one Brand had in the early seasons when he was the Stark of Winterfell, and all the people were coming into the great hall with their problems. He was being guided by Maester Luwin of course but Sansa could have been shown to be competent sorting peoples needs. Telling blacksmiths how to do their job is almost the most out of character and ridiculous way to convey competence for her. Its so cringey too.

Plus it makes no sense to pad armor with leather, or pad armor at all: When you are cold, lots of layers of cloth/linen will keep you worm. Gambesons (Cloth armors), to exactly that. And in history, people had them on and their breast plate over them. No use of wasting very expensive leather (You need to kill a cow for this: Doesn't worth it), that will serve no purpose at all to begin with (Layers of cloth will actually keep you warm, unlike leather).
@NowhereMan7
@NowhereMan7 5 жыл бұрын
@@leeroberts4850 I thought Sansa said "shouldnt they be making those with leather, for when the real cold comes" or something along those lines though
@squashedeyeball
@squashedeyeball 5 жыл бұрын
@@leeroberts4850 Well, Sansa wasn't talking about a breast plate. The most any type of sword or spear can do, it create a tiny gap that won't even touch the padding. You never use swords against men at armor, unless you are "half swording" for gaps (Or use your hilt as a mace). Plus, armor, even maille, never sits directly on your skin, ever: You always wear a cloth padding (Or even gambeson underneath), so they is an extra layer of protection. The only case in which armor might touch your skin, is if you have a maille "neck protection", that you might pad where it is connected to your (half) helmet. But since this is a late medieval period in which everyone seem to have full plate armor, there is not real need for maille (Safe for those house whose soldiers have half helmets).

So that didn't seem that bad to me. I thought the blacksmiths were guys from the Vale (since Littlefinger is there with the Vale army) and you never see any of the Starks or their forces wearing anything but coat of plate (IE pieces of plate sandwiched between leather and riveted/stitched together). Doesn't seem implausible that she would know that people don't wear bare plate in the North but the Vale guys might not know that. Still, what a weird scene. It wasn't well done because it only makes sense if you overthink the whole thing. If they wanted to show Sansa being competent and hands-on there are so many better ways to do it.

@ClaireYunFarronXIII 5 жыл бұрын
Are you Kidding me? ...okay, if Tommen outlawing Trials by Combat does not matter to the North, then Julio's comment is wrong too, because the North does not use Trials by Combat...according to you. Petyr Baelish could not demand a Trial by Combat not because it was outlawed, but because the North does not use it... I say, Petyr is of the South, so it should have mattered to HIM... 🙄 Tommen outlawed Trials by Combat, that is why Petyr did not demand one... 🙄
@ClaireYunFarronXIII
@ClaireYunFarronXIII 5 жыл бұрын
Are you Kidding me? How did the North become independent? Roose Bolton joined with the South, him dying should not suddenly change that. Jon becoming king is suppose to be a MASSIVE deal like Robb's Kingship was, but the show never addressed it...thus a plothole. Cersei does say Jon is a rebel(I think), but not because he broke the North from the South...
@kk8490
@kk8490 5 жыл бұрын
Lightning Farron I don’t know where you got the idea the North doesn’t use or approve of trials by combat. When Rickard Stark was summoned to Kings Landing by the Mad King to answer for his son’s treason, Rickard demanded a trial by combat. Obviously because they were apart of the Seven Kingdoms for over 200 years they’re customs and laws would evolve with the other Southern Kingdoms. I don’t see why or how a succession based on the illegitimacy of the king and the murder of their Liege Lord would lead to an overhaul of the entire legal system. There is literally no reason to believe that the North isn’t okay with trials by combat.

I am convinced that Aidan Gillen is very relieved that his character got finally killed off. Throughout Season 7 Littlefinger has done nothing but lean against walls and stare. Not a big challenge for an actor.... As for George R R Martin, I'm afraid many book readers will be disappointed: they don't just expect volume 6 of a book series, but a phenomenal work that outshines everything that has been there before and surpasses the show by far. GRRM won't deliver that, and I think he is very well aware of that. That's why "Winds of Winter" takes so long .

Really seems like GRRM was pretty much done with Game of Thrones by the third or fourth book. Been running on fumes since then. And now he's very old and I doubt he really wants to waste his time writing Volume 27 in a series he doesn't feel any excitement for with whatever time he has left on this Earth. He doesn't need the money.
@trolldrool
@trolldrool 5 жыл бұрын
Also doesn't help that GRRM is getting constantly bombarded with e-mails from fans on a daily basis demanding that he finish the books, some even going as far as telling him in their e-mails that at the current rate, he'll die before he can finish it (because that's a possibility all authors like to be reminded about), which only serves to make him more frustrated with the series he used to be really passionate about.

@redbeard He will finish TWOW, it will be out between now and say 2021. I don't think the show will influence it much at all. It won't be shit... unless you are one of those that things book 4 and 5 are shite. It won't be as good as the original 3 which is a given but I think the pace will speed up from the last 2, I mean it will have to. ADOS might never be finished by him, I'd say like 50/50. But that's being optimistic that he actually focuses on ADOS rather than any of the other works he has planned. And it's safe to say that there is no way he will finish any of that stuff he has planned unless he puts off ADOS to write them after TWOW is finished.

She would have died about 10 times if that were a real fight and if they tried to make it look good hoping people wouldn't notice what a pile of crap it was. I can actually buy into Sansa knowing things as she has had time to learn these things as a prisoner since season 1. She could have picked up the skills with a simple observation. Since season 5 the show has dropped in quality. People think they are going to be getting 90-minute episodes when they have clearly said they will be over 60 minutes. The bare minimum for a feature-length film is basically 61 minutes. There will be many upset people as they wait for that special episode that will tie everything up but we all fear that we won't get many answers about the NK and WW because they need to leave something to tell in the prequel.

And not just broad wider goals, but the nuts and bolts of what workers would and should be doing in Winterfell. She never had anyone to teach her this stuff. The whole series she's been nothing but a damsel in distress while everybody else rules and she has no part in it. Now all of a sudden she knows blacksmiths' jobs better than they do? Someone else in this comment section made a good point, said that it would have worked better if they had Sansa sitting in the hall the way Bran was in early seasons when he was learning about ruling from Luwin. Obviously Luwin is gone but there are other people Sansa can have sitting beside her giving her advice. Then rather than going out and telling blacksmiths their job, as if she knows anything, she could have the blacksmiths come to her in the hall, ask them what they can do, tell them what she wants in broad terms, with advice from other lords sitting around her. That sort of thing. Instead she's this one-woman master planner despite never having been taught anything about things like what blacksmiths do. This is a far cry from in the books, where Sansa is in the Vale actually learning politics from Littlefinger, who unlike in the show where he became an idiot so he could be killed in some dumbass way because the show-writers don't know how to craft a plot line that makes sense, in the books he's still a political genius and he's manipulating the whole Vale masterfully. And Sansa is learning from him. In the show, instead she was sold to the Boltons to be Ramsay's plaything and nothing more, because rape and torture supposedly count as character development for a woman in D&D's warped fucked-up minds. But even if the show did go George's way, she still wouldn't know anything about armor and wouldn't be able to tell blacksmiths the nuts and bolts of their jobs, because that's not what the nobles did.

GoT has been pretty shite for awhile. If I had to give a simple answer for why this is happening, it'd be that the writers diverted from the books too much, not that trying to do something new is bad. But trying to do something new, having it be bad, and refusing to return to the source material is just silly.
@nunouno001
@nunouno001 5 жыл бұрын
While that is part of the problem, I think the real problem is what IdeasofIceandFire said. The writers just clearly don't care anymore. They just want to end this series and move on to Star Wars or to their own show as soon as possible. Why do you think they trimmed down the series to 7 and now six episodes, so that way they have less to do. Even without source material if they really cared they could have told a story that while not on pair with the books could have at least still stood on its own two legs. But instead they decided to take the easiest and fastest way to the exit and didn't care about what got damaged along the way.

It’s what IdeasOfI&F mentions in the video - D&D lost their passion for the project and I would probably argue, never considered that doing George’s story justice would require them to be in it for the long term. I understand them not wanting to commit to that once they understood what it would entail, but the hubris of not handing off the project to someone else who would have brought fresh energy and ideas is unforgivable.

And despite that Feast and Dance get a lot of flak, they're filled to the brim with details and some great set ups for future books, and for anyone who finds the most recent seasons of the show disappointing, they definitely present a far better and more interesting path to the story. Bad writing guys. The whole season was a mess but Winterfell plot was so stupid. I passed the whole season trying to explain why my baby Arya was acting like a total psycho, why Sansa was suddenly the only smart person around, why the Starks were ready to kill each others... I hoped it was some bigger plan to have LF killed but NOPE smh they were really fighting each others like the kids they were back in S1. NONE of this made sense ! - Sansa magically know everything better than anyone. I hate how d&d give her others characters skills and storyline. Or how they make others characters dumber when Sansa is around. - Bran is only here to show flashback and don't care about his family anymore. That's pure bs tbh. Even with all his powers and the war coming, he still care about his family (books). - LF character was butchered too. He reveal all his "secrets" to Sansa. Tell her to always think about EVERY possibilities before making a move but he never thought about a possible escape plan in case his plan to have Arya kill don't work. - and Arya...omg where to begin. She's my fav, I LOVE her. But d&d don't do her justice imo. They only focus on her killer side but she's so much more than that. She love her family, she will never harm them, they are her pack.

@@Leo_ofRedKeep I think the real end of the good show was the end of the war of the 5 kings. When Joffrey, Robb, Renly, Tywin all died was the true death of got and I believe the writer wanted to write only this and only extended himself because he saw how popular it got (it was either for money or to please his fans and give them more) but the 4th and 5th boots already shown "the sign of sickness" but what also isnt good for the show is that they killed the good actors and you are left with people like Turner who can only play the sorrow and crying parts, Emilia Clark who is even worse. But as I said the true end was the death of Tywin as I feel it. After that started happening the monstrosities like LF getting totally dumb as well as Tyrion and Varys. GRRM planned a story going way beyond the War of the Five Kings from the start and still sticks to that plan. He found himself more inspired first, which led to the first part of three taking three books, then indulged in more sprawling "gardening" as he calls it, because he could (he could because it sells), not really out of greed or yielding to fans desires. He basically does what he likes. The show tried hard to continue at the same level and much of S5 succeeds in doing so but it was badly received and triggered a conscious change of pace and quality in S6. Littlefinger was sacrificed in S7, Arya boosted to super-hero crap in S6, Tyrion reduced to cheap comic relief also in S6 then made to fuel a weakened plot in S7. Characters were badly simplified as well, all to cater to the level of the audience.

You said much of season 7 felt like filler. You're totally right. D&D had no idea what to do with Sansa/Arya/Bran for season 7 and so they just wasted time. As I've said previously, Dan and Dave are not fantasy guys. Their only interest in GOT was the Iron Throne. Everything else was always secondary. They have no idea how to do fantasy, so they shoved it to the background whenever possible. I also think a lot of the problem stems from the fact that they had originally intended for the show to end with season 7, but HBO chose to extend it to season 8. Chances are, and I am fairly certain of this, originally Sansa and Littlefinger were supposed to plot against Jon while he was away south. Sansa would then betray Littlefinger and he would be killed by Arya by the time Jon returned to defend Winterfell from the WW. A lot of the problems with season 7 can be attributed to the additional season. If you're interested, I have a speculative synopsis for Wind of Winter on my facebook page. And I am going to post one for Dream of Spring soon. You can see how close, or not, I get to the real thing once it finally comes out.

The Winterfell storyline is a showcase of how the entire show would've been if not for the source material. It was the pinnacle of poor writing, disjointed storytelling, and obnoxious catering. Arya at this point is like a character out of some fanfiction. In fact, that's what most of the season felt like as a whole. And it's not even about show vs book anymore. The show now is just all about spectacles, throwing away decent writing and good characters. The final season will look good, it'll tell at least a partial end that we will likely never see in its fullest in the books so there will be some closure. But it likely just won't be that great otherwise.

liked Sansa this season, definitely one of my favorite characters at this point. but in the books and the first 6 seasons I really liked Arya and Bran. So did most people. lets look at why we all liked those two. they were underdogs, always surviving dire situations by the skin of their teeth and their arcs were full of personal and physical dilemma and a dangerous sense of struggle. at the end of season 6, Bran was barely making it away from the wights alive and had his training cut short. Come season 7, he's this distant and hollow, all powerful person who can see absolutely anything, despite having his training cut short, and everything seems super easy to him, which is not why we all fell in love with the character. Same with Arya, she had her training cut short and was fighting from underneath in season 6. Now everything comes super easy and effortlessly to her and she appears to never be in danger. that's not why we got so attached to the character. Maybe an overpowered character like her would be fine in another medium, but Game of Thrones was made so good by having flawed characters who were likes were filled with danger, struggles and doubts.

I am 100% willing to bet that all they have to do is just kill the night king and all the Wrights will instantly die since he raised them.

This channel is in the minority in giving a gut-punching analysis on GOT without romanticizing it. The show has been going downhill since Season 5. The execs are clearly male feminist and the males are nothing more than canon fodder to make the women appear superior. I totally agree with you. You found a new subscriber. Keep up the excellent work.

If you look at footage from the conventions years ago, around season 1 and season 2, D&D always said they only wanted to make it to the red wedding. That's all they really hoped they could get to do. And well it shows, because after season 3 the show went downhill.

How to fix the Winterfell plotline: * It is revealed that to get Littlefinger to help at the Battle of the Bastards, Sansa signed an agreement with him that would look really bad on her if it were made public. Littlefinger can now control Sansa through that, which justifies him spending so much time and effort in Winterfell instead of spending time at the Vale. This also shows that Sansa actually did something to help in season 6 instead of being completely useless. * Bran spends the entire season trapped north of the wall. He just can't be in the Winterfell plotline because omniscient super-powers make the whole thing stupid. * Littlefinger is absent between episodes 2 to 4 because he's off with the knights of the Vale rescuing Edmure from his dungeon. This shows that the Freys' deaths actually has consequences. While over there, Littlefinger also listens to that witness that Arya deliberately kept alive and works out Arya's secret from there. * The Brotherhood without Banners stop by at Winterfell on their way to the Wall because it would be nice to have these characters meet and it makes logical sense for them to be there. * Near the end of the season, Brienne gets sent on a mission to find Howland Reed because he's an important character who should really have appeared by now. Brienne also needs to do something that isn't guard duty. * Now that the minor things are out of the way, on to the important stuff! Littlefinger! Littlefinger should have actual plans and motivations. In this season the way I've done it, he will see Daenarys as a threat and will plot to try to get rid of her. He will: 1) Try to push his puppet Sansa over Jon as Queen of the North, playing on the northern lords' unwillingness to bend the knee to Daenarys. 2) Push this issue by faking a letter by "Davos" telling the northern court that "Jon has been captured by Daenarys and is now being used to control them (like Jaime used Edmure against the Blackfish)". 3) This succeeds: Jon does bend the knee to Daenarys half-way through the season in order to get her to agree to help him against the White Walkers. The Northern lords name Sansa Queen of the North in response. 4) After the peace deal (which happens earlier in the season), plot with Euron to trick the Dothraki (who are at the Neck at this point in time) into boarding ships with the promise of "being free of Daenarys's tyrany" and "being safe in essos instead of fighting the army of the dead". Euron betrays them and burns the ships. Brienne finds some evidence of Littlefinger's involvement while she's down in the Neck. 5) Hire Arya to kill Daenarys in order to "heal the rift between Sansa and Jon". This is the point he gives Arya the Catspaw dagger. Arya doesn't do it, but instead tells Sansa. * Have the conflict between Sansa and Arya happen because Sansa wants to marry Arya to Sweetrobin in order to undermine Littlefinger. There are no threats of cutting off faces or murder or anything that bad; the worst insult that occurs is "Sansa Bolton". More relevantly, Arya asks Littlefinger for help, who forces Sansa to give up on the marriage idea and the sisters return to being friendly. * Have Sansa smuggle Varys and Davos into Winterfell. Sansa uses Varys as a judge for Littlefinger's trial, alongside herself and Royce. During the trial, they will present actual evidence (from Davos, Arya, Brienne and a captured assassin that Littlefinger sent to kill Davos). Littlefinger will have an actual defence and will also present his compromising evidence against Sansa. Eventually Sansa will innocent herself but has to renounce her claim on Queen of the North (returning it to Jon). After failing to argue his case, Littlefinger demands trial by combat; the judges force him to fight Arya who kills him. This also means that Arya's fight scene this season is against an opponent she actually has a chance at beating, instead of against Brienne who should wipe the floor with her.

most of your ideas are like WHY???? it doesn't matter when they all get killed by the white walkers!! especially in the north!!!
@randomstrategy7679
@randomstrategy7679 5 жыл бұрын
@@thenman23 The answer to your question of "why?" from a writing perspective is to give Littlefinger a worthy death and an interesting final season for one of the best characters in the show. To make Sansa become an actual player instead of continuing to be passive. And to make Arya behave like Arya. You could argue that the entirety of game of thrones is pointless if they're all going to get killed by the White Walkers, but that doesn't mean we should remove the entirety of game of thrones. The answer to "why?" from a character perspective, is that Littlefinger doesn't take the threat of the White Walkers seriously, he wants the Iron Throne and the arrival of Daenarys is a major problem for him. Meanwhile Sansa is aware of what a threat Littlefinger is and is working against him. These are perfectly reasonable perspectives for the characters as we know them.

Don't forget how everyone can teleport now. Dany's ludicrous speed flight from Dragonstone to beyond the wall has been fairly well documented, but there's also Brienne's trip from Winterfell to King's Landing in the span of one episode. Remember in Season 1 it took Ned and Robert several episodes to travel from Winterfell to King's Landing. Granted, Brienne didn't have a large entourage to deal with, but there was snow in The North which should have slowed her down considerably. You know a show is running out of steam when it starts to contradict its own established rules.

So what does that tell you that Benioff himself admits he had chosen Arya to be the one to take down The Night's King. Benioff really loves Arya or Maisie, not sure which. Look how Jon's character arc is smashed in the end. What were D&D think? Maybe you should revisit this video in the wake of the end of the series. But you nailed it. You saw the impending disaster that would be Season 8. You saw clearly the Emperor(s) wore no clothes.

Its not for lack of passion. The show lost its character and intellectual quality right after it passed where the book plot was. Dan and Dave are fine at Adapting a story to television but suck ass at taking this complex story to its ending on their own. Them saying they lost passion is just a cover up for how unoriginal they are.
