Did you notice how it begins with the Stark theme, and as Ice is being melted down, it slowly morphs into the Rains of Castamere? By the end, the Lannister theme has taken over.

Shroomie On the off chance you haven't checked them out yet, Alt Shift X has episode analysis of season 6 and 7 that is freaking awesome. And the topic videos are great too. Tbh Alt Shift X just has exceptionally high quality videos period, but they're also really fun to watch, funny and packed with useful GoT history, lore, analysis and theories. That said, I agree 1,000% that Nerd Soup should do these for every episode (including 6 and 7 again). Oooo and they could do videos on GoT history, houses, theories, prophecies and etc too

Jaime wouldn't have gone after Ned if Catelyn hadn't kidnapped Tyrion and took him to be tried by a mad woman who hates Lannisters. Jaime knew that nobody would give a damn about Tyrion being unjustly murdered, save himself, so he went after Ned to try to get him to bring Tyrion back to King's Landing. Jaime didn't start the War of the Five Kings, Catelyn did. Littlefinger set the trap, but Catelyn was the first one to take the bait.

tywins speach about whats more honorable is awesome, but so wrong, they didn't just kille the noblemen, they also killed the entire stark host, so killing 10.000 men on the battlefield is kind of more honorable then killing 10.000 men at a wedding ;)
@smartiejl
@smartiejl 6 жыл бұрын
Tom Merker Killing 10000 men in combat can sort of be justified by arguing it’s out of self-defense, because the enemy display clear hostility and are a legitimate threat to your life. Killing 10000 men at a wedding when the victims were promised safety and voluntarily unarmed, is just simply treachery, especially when guest right is such a universally agreed sacred tradition in Westeros.

Tom Merker -- I think too, that how he viewed the Starks from Ned calling him out to answer for Clegan down to Caitlin & Robb ‘kidnapping’ both his other sons. He hated them with such passion that I’m sure he was delighted by how they died--unaware, defenses down, celebratory mood--to rip that confidence in their ‘honorable selves’ to bits. The only real warmth that comes from Tywin is the lovely scenes with Arya serving him. Love those!

Ironic that dishonorable people win, while the honourable people lose at the end of this war of the five kings. But those dishonorable people they too end dying.

On a macro-level, it's terrifyingly surgical. Instead of common folk getting caught up as collateral casualties, the entire Stark host was wiped out quickly. It was still all BS for Tywin to claim this as his rationale. He chooses the most brutal and terrifying path in order to keep his opponents in shock. It took 20 years before Prince Oberyn even attempted to get his revenge on Gregor Clegane and extract a confession implicating Tywin.
@Gnossiene369

It's NOT more honorable. The very definition of honor screams against it with all it's power... It is the "best" way to end a war though. But not even close to honorable. It's the exact opposite.

Ultimately Jaime just wants to be recognized as the greatest fighter in Westeros. He wants people to think of him the way people think of Arthur Dayne and Barristan. But he was never given a Great War to create his legend. He was a hostage basically in Robert’ Rebellion and the war against the Iron Islands was a joke. Then he was captured and lost his sword hand in the War of 5 Kings. And of course now people hate him for doing the right thing in killing the Mad King.

@Ragnar Skarpsvärd wtf you on about. They clearly state in the show many times how he is one of the best ever. He was just toying with Ned who's only slightly above swordsman. In the books Jaime is even better.
@spewter
@spewter 5 жыл бұрын
@Australiantatious - Dude, watch the show. Jaime is consistently portrayed at one of the greatest swordsman in Westeros. The Nerd Soup Guys make a great point when discussing how Jaime is a born leader but doesn’t ever become one. He’s got the wealth as a Lannister, the looks, the charisma, the legendary sword skills, and a formidable family name. This is everything you’d need to succeed in Westeros, yet Jaime doesn’t want it. I think it’s because he saw just how ugly and destructive power can be when he served Aerys. And growing up with a fanatical, power-hungry father must have been offputting. The when he saved the city and was vilified for it, his reaction was that these people weren’t worth ruling. What good is power over the masses when the masses are ignorant and reactionary? Being born rich and privileged allowed Jaime to feel powerful from the start. Littlefinger, for example, probably takes inspiration from the powerful men of Westeros. He never had the feeling of security and status so feels he must fight for it. So that’s what Jaime doesn’t want. As to what he does want, I’d say he would have been to a large extent happy to live quietly with Cersei and the kids. But sadly for poor Jaime, even if he didn’t have Tywin controlling his life, he’d still have to deal with Cersei being another megalomaniac, and his eldest son being is a psychopath.

Read Sun Tzu's "The Art of War." One of the tenants of a good general is that they only go to war when the war is won. Robb had no clue about his goals, the logistics, the means of achieving those goals, allies, finances, etc. Tywin, however, pretty much had all that rolled up well before Ned entered King's Landing. There were some exceptions but for the most part, Tywin had already won the war. So he could afford to lose battles (as Robb even knows) because Robb, by default, can't win.
@avajohnson6992
@avajohnson6992 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. Tywin is a great strategist and was playing the long game. Robb hadn't lost any battles up to that point, but he had just lost Karstark's men so it would have only been a matter of time before the tables turned and he did start to lose battles and many more men.

Like General Grant in the American Civil War who used "brutal arithmetic" to defeat the South: narrow victories for the Confederacy were more damaging to them because the industrial North was more heavily populated, Grant knew they could absorb the losses and grind out victory. Did you guys overlook how Oberyn's first scene with Tyrion confirmed R+L=J? When he talks about how the noble Rhaegar Targaryen left Elia for another woman? Pretty sure that was the first time the show makes that connection.
@spewter
@spewter 5 жыл бұрын
Very true! Good spot. This is the first time a character has specifically challenged the ‘Rhaegar was a kidnapping rapist’ narrative. Need Soup boys have said in past recaps that the way Rhaegar is spoken of (Barriston Selmy says he’s the best man he ever knew), that this undermines Bobby B’s narrative of Evil Rhaegar. But yeah, it’s not focussed on but it’s clear that they don’t see Rhaegar as an abuser. And!... let’s not forget that the Martell’s would have good reason to resent Rhaegar. I guess the R+L=J is such a big fab theory that to linger any longer on it, would be too much. Well played, D&D
@jakewright1932
@jakewright1932 5 жыл бұрын
@@spewter History is written by the victor, and the victor was a furious man that probably didn't know Rhaegar very well at all. I imagine the Martells knew Rhaegar's personality a lot more than Robert did and Oberyn was never one to deny realities. You're right, focusing on R+L=J would've ruined it so it's a nice subtle jab at the idea from a character that seems so very far removed from Jon and his lineage. I imagine people were too engulfed in Oberyn's swagger to notice the implications of what he was saying.

I mean Tywin invading the Riveralands started the war technically. By your definition of what starts a war it could be Cersei and Jaime throwing out the son of the Warden of the North out of a tower. Did they not know catelyn would work day and night to find out who did it? And charge those who conspired? The point of Got is that causes are very long consequence
@Vanillastump

Seriously though, not to downplay Bran's role in defeating the Night King, but imagine how amazing it would be for Jaime to defeat the NK. He's essentially a crippled knight that is on the road to redemption. Landing the killing blow on the NK with his left hand would save millions of innocents from death (again) by killing another King and restore his honor. It would just be so fucking poetic, man. Being called the Kingslayer after that would be a massive compliment.

I always thought it was essential that Daenerys spent so much time trying to rule in Meereen. It's a chance for her to get some real practice being a proper Queen before heading to Westeros to try doing it for real, like she wants to so badly. People complain that it's a complete waste of time, that she's "spinning her wheels," for multiple seasons, but I disagree with that sentiment completely. If she'd have set sail for Westeros while her Dragons were young, like after leaving Qarth or somewhere around then, she'd not only have most likely failed as a ruling Monarch in King's Landing by the 6th or 7th season, she probably wouldn't have even made it into the city to begin with. It wasn't until after she had acquired her Army of Unsullied, her mounted Dothraki "Cavalry" and company of Second Sone sellswords, her Dornish and Ironborn Westerosi allies who helped her get her fleet of ships and her three full-grown Dragons that she was actually ready to set sail. But most importantly she needed to actually LEARN how to be a Queen, not just a conqueror, for any of it to even matter in the first place. And that's the opportunity she's given in Meereen, whether it took her a couple seasons to get ready or not. Hell, she didn't even have her loyal Dothraki Hordes or fleet of ships until the end of season 6. So, all the pieces hadn't quite fallen into place yet anyway. That's not "spinning your wheels" in my book, that's making DAMN certain you're actually ready before taking that first step. Because if you're not, all that hard work and preparation is meaningless. 👍😊

Yes- Brienne is physical strength, Olenna intellectual & Marjorie is beauty & charm all ways to get what you want in this world. They should’ve let Tommen & Marjory rule that’d have been the best for the realm IMHO lol (Renley would have been a good King too!)

Spoiler warning season 7 😋 And bare with me I'm not a woman of few words. I'm just rewatching this episode (and the whole series for the 6th time or so 😀) and something stood out to me in the following scene... Jamie is back and gets his golden hand fitted by Qyburn. Then Qyburn and Cersei talk briefly before he leaves. She thanks him for helping her with "the other matter" and says her symptoms have gone completely when he asks if she feels better. Some episodes ago Olenna told Tywin that Cersei wasnt a good match to marry Ser Loras because she is too old and her change will come soon. Now putting two and two together I thought... Wait a minute. Maybe she starts experiencing menopause symptoms for which Qyburn gave her a remedy. Also she pushes Jamie away when he makes advances towards her and says not now and that he came back too late. Although I don't know how she would have wanted to have another child with him at this point in the story but it would fit into the theory that it's part of why she is mad at him so what the hell let's say it's another clue. 😋 And on a more current note... that would mean she couldn't be pregnant years later in season 7. I mean I didn't believe her to be pregnant anyway and thought saying it was just tactics to keep Jamie close and loyal. But this could be a clue for us watchers. This just really got stuck in my head right now. Maybe it's total bs haha or it's already a theory and I'm just late to the party. Anyway I needed to stop and write it down for my fellow tinfoil hat wearers. ^^

I think people give Tyrion too much leeway when it comes to Shae. She might be in the wrong about how she's handling it but she's right about his unrealistic expectations of their relationship and what it'd eventually turn into. My reading of his scenes with Sansa mixed with his relationship with Tywin ultimately end with him trying to make it work with Sansa. He's essentially stringing Shae along and lying to both himself and her.

Ving Rhames --I think he does love Shae but he cares for Sansa but it can’t be more than that as long as Shae is there. Where is deluded is thinking Shae would go quietly away and whatever kindness he could ever show, Sansa will never get over she’s just a hostage.

One thing that pisses me off is nobody remembers Tysha Tyrion's first wife, Tywin orders his guardsmen to rape her, while tyrion was forced to watch all this happen to her, then after that messy scene tywin forces his son to pay her as if she was a whore. This is Tyrion's first love and it was destroyed so brutally by his own father, this motives tyrion for a good reason beside then killing his own father.

Tyrion's first situation with his wife makes his relationship with Shae all the more reckless, imo. If, in the show, he's still not aware that Tysha actually did love him and wasn't paid then he's risking the same thing happening all over again. You can't help who you love but you can sure choose to not put them in a dangerous situation.

I think it's personally a 'having cake and eating it too' kinda thing that gets obscured by how badly he's treated. He doesn't have to be there, he wants to be there. He's certainly crushed under the weight of his father but his desperation to be acknowledged by people who despise him and whom he despises cloud his judgement.

Jamie is right about Sansa probably being the safest in kl with Tyrion as her husband because her parents and her older brother are all murdered, they know nothing of her younger siblings and he knows that Lysa Arryn is not the best woman, like when Cersei points out to lf that after Lysa's death when he calls her kind, she calls him out on his bs and tells him that she was neither of those things. Ofc, Jamie is still not fulfilling his vows, he could confront his family about their monstrosity but he doesn't because he's back in his comfort zone, with no terror looming near. What bugs me the most about him is when people say that he's a great guy and what not is that, he decides to stand with his family day after day even when they're all horrible. He was supposed to protect Elia and her kids but he never confronts Tywin that they could have been imprisoned instead of being killed. Ned Stark was absolutely right, he served when serving was easy, that's literally all he does until he meets Brienne.
