Polygons that aren’t triangles are triangulated into triangles anyway by GPU. 3D artists traditionally have triangle budgets for the 3D models they author. The “triangle” talk was to point out that artists won’t need to do that anymore, and they drove the point home by sharing the number of triangles in the scene. The point was for 3D artists to hear that number and think “wow this will make my life easier”.

If this, in your opinion, is the best podcast on IGN? Then you need to listen to Unlocked or Podcast Beyond. No offense to the 4 people that run this podcast. But it's not as well ran as the other ones and they ramble about nonsense as well. Why call it Game scoop if you guys don't even talk about games half of the time. Just make weird jokes with eachother that aren't even funny.

Odran Keane-Teague This is, by far, the best Podcast on IGN..... This is not opinion, but rather fact. Beyond used to be a close second until Greg Miller left. Max did a good job, but Jonathan is just flat out unwatchable and cringe inducing. NVC and that other one are just plain boring..... Scoop!

I think on the sound portion, they mentioned the use of convolution reverbs, which means you can take an existing sound sample, like a rock falling, and then accurately simulate it in any given space that has been previously measured and sampled via an IR or Impulse response. So you can make it sound like that same rock is dropped in a small house, gigantic cave or anywhere in between without traveling to that location and actually doing that thing. As long as the impulse response exists for that environment. The same concept exists for guitar players wanting to simulate a guitar cabinet sound without blowing out their neighbor's eardrums. All software-based!

When discussing muscle memory for games from the 90's, I recently messed around with Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX which uses the same engine as tony hawk. It came out on the ps1. I popped it into my ps2 and was able to land tricks and get the controls down pretty well. I only played 10-15 minutes. If I started playing again to unlock everything, I feel like the muscle memory will help with that.

I wrote a letter to N64 magazine when I was a kid. I was looking forward to Perfect Dark and had a gameboy camera. I suggested that they use the gameboy camera for the face mapping feature and won the letter of the month. The next month they announced that they were implementing the feature in the game. I assume that it was just a good guess, but part of me wonders if my idea was passed onto Rare. It was a sad ending for the game and for me. I was looking forward to the N64 steering wheel that was promised and instead received a gameboy battery pack with no letter attached. It was a strange one all round.

Well if you look at Unreal web page the demo ran at 30FPS and 1440P (so not really impressive next gen 4k 60FPS we were promised). In fact a laptop ran it at 40FPS a second (but talking 1.2 k vs the 400 - 600 price point of PS5 / XBX) so hopefully it will be optimised like the page says to 60FPS and higher Res. Don't forget tech demos look amazing and games never look like that I've seen some amazing AMD and Nvidea Tech Demos over the years and when I finally got X game i never looked as good like the E3 Watch Dogs Trailer compared to the final product (which apparently can now look better than E3 demo at last with new tech). Plus a Tech demo might takes loads of resources so a full 20 - 30 hours game will never look as good (otherwise it would take 10 years to make). It is interesting and I am sure other engines like Unity etc will all do something similar and it does sound like development time can be cut as only 1 high res assist is required and engine does the rest rather than manually by people, so artists will re train for new tech and hopefully means not as much crunch etc and dev time. Remember the Amazing PS3 demo at E3 of Killzone turned out that was pre-rendered to show whats possible and the real game was nothing like it proper lies. So once I actually see new games at 4K 60FPS I am not going to build my hypes up, over the big Hype train, yes there is going to be improvements along with Faster SSD etc etc but not as big of jumps as we have had in the past.

Nothing about that was "ps5 graphics" and it's just LITERALLY "this looks as good top end games already do except this is a tech demo to show how you can save resources except it's an engine that wont be out until mid 2021 so no game except ones that start development after 2021 can actually use it and any tripe A games with it are at least 2-3 years away but this is a great marketing ploy by Sony for morons who don't understand anything about tech", and even then it ran at 1440p 30fps on hardware not even out yet. That's super underwhelming. Shadow of the Tomb raider, without these cost savings, runs at 90 FPS on higher end cards with everything at max on 1440p, and looks literally just as good, with gameplay, foliage AND a bunch of NPCs and their AI. This demo, without any of those factors, still massively underperformed in comparison. Don't get me wrong, the tech is pretty darn cool and will make the average game look much better, but it looks pretty on par with most triple A games right now. Extremely lazy clickbait that these sites are heavily relying upon up hype up absolutely unreal hype (pun intended), just to garner the clicks and pander to Sony fanboys. I mean it's really just pulling off this kind of attention due to the drought and disappointment of that pathetic inside Xbox stream. EDIT: Not a criticism of the gang. Love their podcasts and their takes. Usually the most knowledgeable ones, and they do address these points. Just was a critique of the clickbait and the media coverage of this and how misleading it has been towards the ignorant.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact you think the UE5 tech demo looks "pretty much like today's games" ...that's just not the case. One statue alone in that demo has over 33 million polygons, which I could maybe assume, some scenes aren't producing 33 million poly's a second in today's games...and that demo had 500 of those statues and was a combined 16 BILLION poly's alone. Nevermind all the other assets around the scene. AND the scene was using REAL dynamic bounce G.i. lighting...this kind of tech and fidelity is used in offline CGI rendering...and the PS5 was pumping CGI fidelity visuals in real time 30 times a second...and according to Epic Games and Tim Sweeney, was just the beginning... That is a monumental leap in performance and visual fidelity. Every triangle was being rendered on a PER PIXEL basis...which results in those perfect, high quality shadows. So...
