Phil is replying to someone asking about Nintendo and he's just saying yeah they'd be an incredible acquisition, but it's not a viable option at this time. Seems strange that for as long as you guys talked about it and researched it, you didn't even realize the refresh has a larger SSD. That's why the price remains the same in this document at least. Is that a fair trade off? That's not for me to decide, that's up to the individual but you guys are better than this. You've made it sound like this is the same price for less, despite the spec sheet showing a larger SSD, better wifi capability, improved power consumption, etc. It's all right there. All you had to do was read it.

For context in 2020 Nintendo was selling off a lof of stock at the height of Switch's profitability. Presumably Microsoft could have attempted to buy up a bunch of Nintendo stock and have more leverage to try and buy them. It seems he is saying an attempt at a hostile takeover would be bad PR for them. It is unrealistic to think Microsoft would ever pull off a purchase of Nintendo but there were probably internal conversations around that time.

No, it isn’t. No matter how hard you try to talk it into reality. The all digital future isn’t coming and it certainly isn’t coming sooner than you thought. You thought this generation would be the one starting an all digital future. Nintendo is never gonna go all digital and Sony and Xbox only will if physical sales bottom out at 20% or less which they aren’t. Also, internet isn’t available everywhere for players to download 100+ gb of games. To order release hardware that isn’t capable of discs or cartridges would hurt sales worldwide. It ain’t happening. The corporations would love it to but it ain’t.

Nintendo is not a smaller company than Activision. We know Xbox overpaid for Activision well above their worth, and their stock was inflated after the announcement of their acquisition. Just look at their profits last year, Nintendo profited 3B more.

If Nintendo stays physical they will have a huge monopoly on the retail space. Parents still go to stores to buy games for gifts, people still like going to look at games, Nintendo is more recognized than ever in 2023 with the recent box office success of the Mario movie, the Nintendo Theme Parks, the overwhelming proliferation of Switch, Mario Kart as a cultural icon, the forthcoming Nintendo museum, all the merch and graphic tees they sell at every big box store and mall. and of course the long awaited successor to the Switch on the horizon. If Sony and Microsoft both flip to all digital and pull out of the retail market they are lowering their overhead costs,but giving Nintendo a license to thrill.

The quote that Nintendo being tied to his own platform is not the best situation for them. That’s absolutely true. It makes some of the best games out there arguably the best games out there. Think about how many games they sell on their platform. Tens of millions right. They took those same games same teams same everything if they said these games are now multi platform. How many copies would they honestly sell. Nintendo would easily double the quantity of games they sell. They might even go beyond that. Plus you have to remember Nintendo doesn’t have a great online infrastructure They could actually work with entities that have great online infrastructure you know you could actually play Mario kart 8 online. Yes, Nintendo would lose third-party money they earn when games are released on their platform, but think of the sales they would get from their own first party games. They would no longer have to sync any money into developing a console. Sad to say maybe but that entire division of Nintendo could be gone that money could be put towards making more games. Yes, the games are also look better because they would have access to hardware that could really push the limits of graphical capabilities. Nintendo could really go back to what their best at making games. It is simply crazy to think about how many copies of Mario kart eight with sale on PlayStation think about that for a minute. How many cups of Mario kart eight with sale on PC ridiculous they can easily double their sales of games and they wouldn’t have to do a thing literally flip a switch damn near.

It’s no secret that the digital/disc-less is the future but it is interesting to have their tactics leaked concerning Nintendo. Xbox is ushering the cloud hard, and now we can see they hope to become the core console and sole infrastructure. Thus pushing all console competitors to Sega status. Considering how the FTC ruled, they may succeed. Furthermore, we may now see why the CMA showed caution. We cannot forget how important Antitrust laws are. They are more important than the console tribalism.

It all started with Sony saying that the next PS5 model would have detachable disc drive. They know most people are buying digital these days. It’s just so convenient, and constant sales on PSN makes the decision easier. The PlayStation Store makes billions of dollars every month. Sony actually confirmed PSN is the driving force behind PlayStation success. It makes sense, as PlayStation is by far the most popular home console. Bandai Namco confirmed 65% of Armored Core 6 sales were on PS5. That is insane. You can always get a grasp for which version is selling the most whenever you see confirmed sale product reviews on a website like Amazon. Xbox version always sells very little of the same game in comparison.
