The next step is that all the workers under contractors will be fired and replaced with contractors' contractors. The same has happened in several countries with mail delivery, which today is turned to be just a long chain of outsourcing after outsourcing.

I remember reading about how WWE's wrestlers are all "independent contractors" so they can't unionize and the company doesn't have to give them benefits. Its really messed up, and I hope this doesn't become the norm in other industries too. It feels like our society is regressing back to feudalism with things like that!

VFX for film and TV is mostly contractors. I've never heard of someone HAVING to leave afterwards though. Usually they try to keep people on if they have work. Overall the practice is not good for anyone

A lot of studios have that rule, it's crazy, but it also makes sense right? If you're not leaving after, then you're just a full time employee at that point haha

@@Nadestraight They just make a new contract if they want to keep you. I've done 3-4 consecutive contracts because they kept getting more work

As an Indie game dev, I can say for 90% certainty that it won't work. The value of a developer doesn't come from the code he makes, but from the deeper understanding of his work, why he chooses to design a system one way over the other, the failed attempts of making the system and failing, the overall intuition on how stuff in that game works, or that project. Intuition that you cannot just write down and explain it, but build overtime, if you keep switching developers then it's like sawing with different color and different size strings, it will hold, but it won't look pretty, and it might even slightly hurt on the skin.

This is what I've always been told by programmers on my project, even training a junior to follow in a senior's footsteps and making sure they use the same language consistently can take months of training

these are the same people who used to work as regular employees, now they are cooperators and work at the same desk, they just opened their own companies and now they are paid better

Typically they produce worst results as contractors though, because they don't stick around for the entire development cycle. If the game has a 4 year dev cycle but a contractor leaves after 12 months, that's a problem a lot of the time

Tech in general is starting to move away from full time employees and more churning and burning through staff. If you ask me its just so the individual workers don't get too influential and also demand a higher pay. No way 10% of Meta's employees are 'low performing' just sounds like an excuse to have layoffs. God bless the indies that try and make their passions work on their own terms.

Honestly, you're better off in every way if you can go indie. There aren't really that many benefits to working in AAA anymore
