Well, Raticate, with the right moveset, was actually able to be a powerful ally to beat the game. I played a "Gary Run" where I used only Gary-owned Pokemon through the game. Keeping Raticate would have helped him out if he kept it leveled with his team. Raticate eRaticated Lorelei (only being Lv. 57), wasn't used vs Bruno Mars, destroyed Agatha's Golbat and Arbok and was useful against her other Pokemon, then only fainted when I got to Lance. If trained well, it's quite powerful, especially with Alakazam to make up for its weaknesses.

You forget the fact that Blue claims that he has caught 40 pokemon in the battle before the one on S.S Anne. He actively choses to not use 6 pokemon, supposedly because he wants to level up the strongest ones

Here's my theory about this. Now because Gary's Raticate is at level 16 in its final battle that leaves Mat to believe that it wasn't the same Ratata 'cos Ratata doesn't evolve until level 20. But here's the thing, the absolute lowest level you can catch a Raticate in Red/Blue in the wild is level 23 in Route 16. So Gary couldn't have caught it in the wild either (unless you're playing Yellow as a Raticate can be caught Level 15 there). So that leaves me to believe that Gary forced his Ratata to evolve early. Now it sounds impossible but remember that Gary doesn't exactly treat his Pokemon with love and respect. My thought is that Gary pushed his Ratata so hard that it evolved faster than it should have. And this strain that this put Ratata/Raticate under is what causes it to die when you make it faint in the battle at the SS Anne.

Theory: Red after killing Blues raticate was shunned by everyone including professor oak and his own mother, seeing this put him in a deep depression and he isolated himself from others. He then went to Mount Silver to be alone with his pokemon who were his only family at that point. During that 1 year period Red and his pokemon eventually died due to hypothermia because of the freezing temperatures there, which would explain why he doesnt speak and why he disappeared when he was utterly defeated by Gold. After being defeated it finally put his spirit to rest and same goes with his pokemon.

Let me disprove this theory real quick: The level 16 Raticate that can’t be the same actually can be. We have seen under leveled Pokémon before; most famous being Lance and his 3 under leveled Dragonites. The next thing I want to say is: why is Blue in a cemetery, saying you didn’t bury your Pokémon when he challenges you there? The next piece of evidence I want to provide is that the Trainers don’t know they are in a game, meaning they don’t see levels like we do, at least that we know of. Another I want you to check is if it’s nature and ability are the same, it’s 90% that they are the same Pokémon. All my evidence disproving this theory.

There is 1 another Pokemon which could supposedly have also been swapped out and it's Blue's Abra. We see Abra in it's final evolutionary stage of Alakazam whilst fighting Champion Blue BUT, in order for Kadabra (Abra's 1st evolution, obtained by levelling up) to evolve into Alakazam it needs to be TRADED. So, either this is a separate Pokemon he got through trading OR it's the same Abra but he got a trading partner for him, as in they double traded the Kadabra, making it evolve into Alakazam and then trade it back to Blue. Either that or Blue's just using Gameshark.

Man, rewatching these is an experience. No wonder I used to headcanon every theory video as true as a child, you just put it in a way that it makes sense to me. I mean, I may not know much about the older generations of Pokemon, but I do know Garry... Isn't exactly the best. Garry probably was wandering at some point and found an already-evolved Raticate, caught it, and switched Ratata out for it because he thought it was stronger, and did the same when he found Exeggcute. Or, you could notice some of the comments below as I saw one that said he possibly could have forced the Ratata to evolve (Which I know is possible because I very much remember an Pokemon Anime episode where this one guy was forcing his Pokemon to work unreasonably hard) and because of that and the battle on the S.S Anne it died. Either way, even if this video was released about 4 years ago, I gotta appreciate it.

I've never liked the "You Killed Blue's Raticate" theory. My main evidence against it is when you beat him before Nugget Bridge, he says "I went to Bill's and got him to show me his rare Pokémon! . . . He invented the Pokémon Storage System on PC! Since you're using his system, go thank him!" This strongly implies that thanking Bill is what Blue was just doing, further implying that Blue uses the storage system. The simplest explanation: Blue stored his Raticate.

I think that Pokémon can evolve earlier when they're trained by NPCs. This is evidence from a different game, but if MatPat can use questionable canon then so can I. In Pokémon GSC, Lance fights you at the Indigo Plateau with two level 47 and a level 50 Dragonite. When _you_ train Dragonair, however, it doesn't evolve until level 55. So I think it's entirely plausible that Gary's Raticate is the same Pokémon as his level 15 Rattata at Nugget Bridge. As an NPC, he's able to make his Pokémon evolve at a different level than you.

But then again, at the nugget bridge battle, his starter is Level 17 and it still hasn't evolved yet. There is also the chance that he could've cancelled the evolution, but I doubt he would for whatever reason, since if he was waiting to get a move earlier which would be Scary Face/Rapid Spin/Razor Leaf (Charmander/Squirtle/Bulbasaur, all learned at Level 19), they still get that move, just 1 or 2 levels later after evolving. They're also in my opinion not that good/helpful since this isn't really including competitive play. His starter doesn't evolve till the next time you see him on the S.S. Anne, which is then Level 20, which then if he chose Bulbasaur OR Squirtle, then they would have Rapid Spin or Razor Leaf since those are learned at level 20 after evolving into Ivysaur/Wartortle, but not Scary Face if he picked Charmander, since Charmeleon learns that at level 21.

speed don't mean anything in the end if that is all it got going for it. Butterfree & Beedrill are hell of a lot faster than the rat and can do more as well. the rat is weak to more or less everything other than ghost attacks. having a Magikcarp in the team would be over all better as it will evo into something far better.. but then again I think Gary lacks the attention span to wait that long.

Gangar, and eggsecutor. you can use eggseutor to put the pokemon to sleep with hypnosis. then use gigadrain to steal health. or poison powder to add a per turn health drain combined with swapping out to gangar, then use curse and dream eater. and if the pokemon wakes up again gangar also knows hypnosis. both pokemon can heal themselves, yo can put your opponent to sleep, and then double stack damage modifires with poison and curse at the same time.

In the S.S Anne there is no pokemon center but the town near it does, and also there is a girl in the ship who offers you to sleep, and since sleeping heal health instantly and It is a feature of using "rest" out of battle, that should count.

I think gamefreak doesn't give a damn about logic. I mean, you play a 10 year old who goes out into the world to live alone, to capture wild animals, and to battle criminal organisations where police failed. You can fit a whole bicycle into your backpack, and running is absolutely impossible without wearing the right shoes. The professor next door asks you what gender you are, and he forgets the name of his own grandson. There are other trainers who are standing in the exact same spot 24/7, and they immediately want to battle if they see you in front of them. If you're next to them, they can't see you. A bottle of water from a vending machine heals more HP than a potion designed for it, and medical animal care is completely free of cost. If your team faints, you run to the last pokemon center you were in, even if it's 5 cities away. If you are in the middle of a cave, you can use a rope to get out. You are not allowed to even exist outside of your town without pokemon to protect you. Except for the safari zone, where there's gigantic, wild pokemon, that's not dangerous at all. And driving your bike in closed buildings is prohibited, professor oak will tell you that, he always knows where you are. There are ledges where it's impossible to climb up, but at the same time completely safe to jump down. There are gold nuggets scattered all over the place, and they are coincidentally ALL found by the same person. Which is you. A sleeping pokemon can break out of a ball if you try to catch it, then it continues sleeping. A poisoned pokemon only takes damage if you move. Random strangers give you their money and phone number if you defeat them. If you catch a water pokemon, you have to teach it how to surf. Throughout your whole journey, you never need to go to toilet, and you never eat or drink anything, and you never sleep. Once you defeated the top 4, you can come back and the guy who was master is still master, even though you clearly are now better. You (still 10 years old) can go into a casino without a problem, and pokemon battles with high amounts of money betting are legal in your age. The police consists entirely of identical looking policewomen, and all nurses look identical too. That pokemon whose name i can't remember, the bird with two heads, can fly. Even though it doesn't have wings. It can even carry you, to a city you've been before (only to cities, and only if you've been there before). So can pidgey, a bird the size of a pigeon. In battle, you can use your attacks regardless of your environment: flying up high while being inside of a small cave at the same time is entirely possible. But what isn't possible is using the splash attack, which magikarp performs, to do any damage. Though, according to the pokedex, magikarp can use it to jump over the top of mountains. If inventory is full with a bicycle, a fishing rod, 44 pokeballs, 23 repels, 30 potions, 2 antidotes, 8 gold nuggets, a big load of money, a pokedex, a phone, a radio, your badges and loads of hms and tms, and you happen to find a candy on the floor, you can't carry it. You are still able to throw a pokeball, but you cannot transport this candy. There is a city where the only way out or in leads through a family's home. But that's no problem, because if you enter a stranger's house, without ringing the doorbell or knocking, they will still welcome you, give you a gift and tell you their life story. There are not toilets anywhere. Or sinks, or barhtubs. There are pokemon centers everywhere, but not a single human hospital. Or fire station. And only one or two police stations. There are fences in the middle of hiking paths which are arranged like mazes. If there's a sleeping relaxo blocking our path, we can't catch it, or squeeze past it, or climb over, no, we need to wake it up. That is only possible using the pokemon flute. See, i could go on forever.

Many previous pokedex entries always says that ratatta and raticate are the extremely weak and oftenly disposed due to easy death. They are playing with literal animals like rats and pigeons. You can even catch pidgeotto in the first gen games that is below it's evolution level. I think for wild pokemon the evolution levels dont count it's only for trained pokemon.

But you are missing the point. you can catch an evolved pokemon that is too low of a level (I don't know how, that never made sense to me) but his ratatta could not have evolved at level 16. He could have caught one that was underleveled, replacing it, but it can't be the same one because that would require him to evolve his pokemon 4 levels too early. For the record, his first gen Dragonite was level 62, and knew (in red and blue) Agility, Barrier, Slam, and Hyperbeam. All of those moves he learns by level up by level 60 except barrier, which as far as I can tell, he can't learn. In Yellow it knew Blizzard, Fire Blast, Thunder and Hyperbeam. Hyperbeam it learns at level 60 and the others it can learn by TM. The only "cheat that I see in his Dragonite is the Barrier move.
