Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, has come out swinging recently. First it was at the Google Play Store, now it's out for Apple's App Store too. Sure, Epic Games says it's about them banning Fortnite from their stores, but I think there is something much BIGGER going on. What exactly? Well, it's written plainly in their own legal documents - they want to open their OWN app store and to do so, they need to break down the monopolies already dominating the markets.

This WAS very interesting because everyone is just talking about the basics while MatPat literally read and entire legal document to see what’s going on. Epic was also very smart by giving players a free harvesting tool as well as giving people a certain amount V-Bucks back to them depending on how many they bought over the last couple of months, witch made people get onboard with Epic to get rid of Apple. Some KZbinrs who collect skins and buy the 100 dollar pack of V-Bucks often (13,550 V-Bucks) got over 10,000 V-Bucks back in return. I would love to see MatPat do more of this.

Also I'm curious if their app store would have the same guidelines as their game store would have, that 12% drops to 5% when the game is developed with the Unreal Engine. @@Cyberspark939 except its not really but ok.... For example Steam charges 20-30%, GOG actually recodes old games to work on modern PC's. Gamestop is literally retail and its a totally different business model. Humble Bundle only takes 15% for their store, Discord store is 10%, Itch.io is whatever the dev sets. Mac OS only charges 3%. It is an arbitrary number that only consoles truly deserve.

The judge DID say, that for now, its not fair for Apple to boot Epic from the developer program, because third party developers would be impacted, but that Epic had breached its contract over Fortnite and that any damages resulting, were Epics own fault.

The reality is, that the Judge is trying to seperate two squabbling corporations and prevent third party developers and consumers getting g caught in the cross fire, but has already stated, that Epic is to blame for the situation with Fortnite. Apple and Google aren't sweating, Tim Sweeny and Epic are sweating. Even if Epic does win, which is very unlikely imho, then you can kiss goodbye to all your favourite consoles.

@@alirohani2687 Neither do the game theorists based on this video. Numerous time, courts have upheld that a monopoly cannot be defined as a company's own marketplace. Otherwise walmart, game exchange, your local mom-and-pop grocery store, or even epic games themselves could be sued for not allowing other people to sell whatever they want at their stores/on their digital storefronts. Try watching the Hoeg Law youtube channel if you want more information on what's going on with this case rather than a hoy take that doesn't have much of a, if any, legal foundation on the matter.

Fun fact. Monopolies are legal if they don't raise prices to "unfair" amounts. That's how it's legal for amazon to basically have a monopoly on online shopping.

One important point I think MatPat didn't make strong enough is that, *Epic are not your friends.* They aren't doing this because they care about the consumer. They're doing it because down the line they can make buckets of cash more than they are doing right now. *Epic doesn't hate Apple or Google, Epic envies them.* If they could be in Apple's position, they'd do it in a heartbeat. If you're someone who beats Epic's drum for them, and thinks they're a good-hearted company, you really need to understand this. *Corporations are not your friends.* They won't do things that benefit the customer unless it also benefits them. And as MatPat has shown *Epic have a ton to gain by doing taking on Apple.*

I would love to see more of this! People keep talking about these huge tech giants, but they (Epic Games) will become their own tech giant. Repeating what Apple already did. All until another small popular game down into the future. I am always reminded that history always repeats itself. This is no difference. In summary, YES! MatPat I would be on board with this idea!
