A couple weeks ago I was invited to Rome to meet the POPE HIMSELF! And when I bring a gift to the Pontiff, I make sure it's seriously good, which is why I brought him Undertale. I wanted to take the opportunity in this episode to talk about why this game is so important, not just for me personally but for the whole gaming community. As gamers, we know who we are, but every once in a while it's important to let the world know that this community is about more than monster-hunting and level grinding. I was in social studies class and our teacher gave us free time. A bunch of boys were crowded around a phone watching game theory, so being the loyal theorist I'm am, I went over and joined the group of guys. And when I said "oh I love game theory" one of the boys looked at me and asked "wait, do you actually watch this?" He was surprised. He's effectively saying that all humans are the same until you get to know them as individuals, which is patently untrue. I am surprised that Matpat fell victim to such a common gross misunderstanding of how reality works. Also, pacifism doesn't work in real life unless the other person is a pacifist, in which case there wouldn't really be a choice between pacifism and violence anyway, because if they are pacifist they aren't going to start killing you, and if they aren't pacifist then being pacifist towards them accomplishes nothing.

Just the bigger picture really, Undertale is a good choice as a gift based on the points made in this video. FTAC Reaper i’m also a gamer and a Catholic, and i wasn’t offended whatsoever. the entire theme of undertale is mercy. that is one of Pope Francis’s main messages he is trying to spread to the public. to get the “good ending” of undertale is reached by showing mercy despite everything the monsters have done to try to kill you. this game has a amazing message. even if the pope doesnt play the game (which he most likely won’t), the game represents his message of mercy

ULT Legacy it’s really sweet actually. The fanbase is being adults about this, instead of acting like children 💕 I feel so bad that Matt had to deal with all the negativity from way back when. I get that Undertale is a game best suited for gamers, but I enjoyed it, and I’m not a gamer. You don’t have to be a gamer to be aware of gaming tropes and appreciate Undertale’s cleverness, and you don’t have to be a gamer to get the message in the game. People really need to grow up, and I’m glad they have because the hate towards Matt wasn’t deserved

Robert Elkins I find it hard to believe he would delete hate comments about it this many years later. He’s not that type of person. As for not being able to take criticism, most of his “criticism” is comments about missing the “old” Game Theory (something he really can’t fix, since he wants to evolve and grow like a normal person), criticizing his research process (which he has explained in detail many times), or calling him out for mistakes (even though he has promptly fixed those mistakes). Hard to take criticism when the only “criticism” you’re getting is from people who can’t move on. And having faith in humanity is a much better use of your time than criticizing someone who doesn’t deserve it. But you do you I guess
