I was born in '97, around the time The Lost World came out. Both it and the original film were movies I watched almost constantly growing up (and...to a lesser extent Jurassic Park 3 before I started noticing all of the problems with that one). TLW is still my second favorite of the series and I've always had a soft spot for it, though I do acknowledge it's far from a perfect movie.

This game defined my childhood. It was trash. I knew it was a bad game. But I just couldn't stop. The dino gameplay just worked. And once you got to a human level, just cheat your way through it like a drone with an automatic machinegun. It was lots of fun. The password system sucked so bad, but I would spend hours on that screen just trying random combination and finding new passwords for various levels at different amount of lives left. I had an A4 sheet filled with all kinds of guessed passwords (and where they dropped you in the campaign). I played so much that I ended up memorizing the the code to start with maximum amount of lives (but I've forgotten since). But the thing that really kept pulling me in was probably Giacchino's fantastic soundtrack. If you put the disc on a CD player, it starts playing a single hour and a half track composed of every single song made for the game (I think there's even some beats that you can't hear anywhere on the game proper). It made me a fan of his music, and since I've hunted down most of his soundtracks.

The lady you play as in the end is not the only movie character. The hunter is also from the movie. He's Dieter Stark, the dude who got eaten by compsognathus. I remember my brother having the action figure of him and it had the same clothing as the hunter in this game. Also makes sense to play as him after the compsognathus level I guess.

3:47 - Ok, that Dreamworks logo was awesome. Most developers can't stand the idea of you daring to skip past their logo much less letting their logo be devoured by dinosaurs.
@VitZ92 жыл бұрын
I think Spielberg owned part of DreamWorks at the time, that always helps. That, and The Lost World was literally the biggest thing happening in the world back in 1997. It's hard to imagine these days just how much hype the Jurassic franchise had back then. You could only compare it to the Star Wars prequels when they came out, it was an event. Nothing that comes out feels like a big deal like that anymore. Not even Star Wars itself.

Very thorough and well documented. I completely agree and I've come to realize that not only do I recall playing the original version and loving it so well, but I now know that there is a special edition out there with a rexy intro (of which im curious to see). I even remember the universal cheat code that you had to enter 3 times to unlock the master list of levels and available bonus content which was how i watched the video recording. Even back then I thought " Either Jeff must have done something to piss Stephen off and he had to do it out of guilt or this was contractually obligated and it's genius either way". Thank you for popping up in my recommended field. If I shall find a review on Dino Crisis on your chanel you shall hear from me again. Until then, thank you for the nostalgia bomb.

Great review! This game reminds me of another side-scrolling game on the SNES called E.V.O.: Search for Eden where you start out as a fish-like creature evolve into a reptile/dinosaur then a mammal and eventually a human. I would like to see your guy in different poses more. outfit does look cool. simple yet effective. sometimes the sound quality is .... on one it was low then when youtube did Autoplay, your next video was way higher. there was on bit you did when the mic was ... a lil too close and souded like it was cracking. >_> don't know if that was part of the bit or not ^_^" anyways... can't wait for your next video rather it be Sonic 3 & Knuckles or more early Jurassic Park games & knuckles or another game system that wasn't up-to-par like the PSP & knuckles

I'm glad I'm not the only one who, 23 years ago, saw the TV adverts and thought it was going to be an open-world free-roaming 3D experience. Up until I saw those ads, I had wanted an N64. After? I immediately told my parents I wanted a PlayStation. Yeah, the game was a big disappointment, and Final Fantasy VII would actually go on to be the main reason I was satisfied with my choice of consoles that gen. But there was a LOT to appreciate about this game. I would even argue that even by the end of the PS1's life cycle, it had THE best graphics of that gen. I remember getting the strategy guide and it having a little interview section in the back where the devs talked about how they were basically the first to come up with the idea of having body limbs be part of a single polygonal "suit" as opposed to being extra polygons tacked onto a torso. It wasn't a great game, but it left great memories in its wake.

I really enjoy this game, mostly for the love and care put into the creatures by Sunil Thankamushy. I love that they move like living, breathing animals. I 100% agree that the T. rex did not deliver; what is the most fearsome predator in the game feels like a constant fight for survival -- I have to chomp-dash through every level just to get by the ever-respawning raptors and soldiers. Finding out I could pin the Stego, Triceratops, and Allo with the O button was life-changing.
@themeekwarrior3 жыл бұрын
Also after playing around many hours as the raptor, you absolutely cannot kill a man in one pounce without biting or raking your claws through him. The PS1 version used a button-password system to recall which level you left off at. Trying to record the password in time was a whole other story.

This game has almost unprecedented graphics and sound for a PS1 game. It could have been an all time classic if it had: 1. Increased player health for ALL characters. 2. More responsive controls that are faster and less janky/animation dependent. 3. More forgiving feet hitboxes for the platforming sections and a smaller player hitbox for enemies. 4. Being able to correct jumps easier in mid air. 5. No fall damage. 6. Add some sort of blocking mechanic. 7. No respawning enemies 8. Auto saves or save states.

Funny enough, My first Jurassic park introduction...was The Lost World. I had the double vhs tape set and watched the movie and got enveloped. Even enjoyed the bonus feature tape. It really felt like a VIP experience to little 6 year old me. It wouldn’t be till the close time of JPIII did I get hyped to go watch the first one. I prefer the Wild unmarked territory of The Lost World much more than “amusement attractions gone horribly wrong” of the first. Not to mention we got to see a wild variety of wildlife that became stand outs Like the Compys, The Stegos, the Pachios and of course our lovable Baby Rex and Mama n Papa. Plus cmon. San Diego. How can you NOT appreciate Steven deciding to up the ante. The first movie was all leading up to the ending of escaping the island. The second movie’s ending is all about getting a T-Rex OUT of civilization fast! Not to mention it’d be a tease of things to come in the far far future~

From this video and personal experience, there must be at least four versions of this game. The original bare bones version without checkpoints or DNA. The version I own which is supposed to be the special edition but has no checkpoints and lacks the T-Rex opening level. It does have the DNA gathering mechanic, though. The special edition wich has all those features. The japanese version which added a save feature (and man does it graphics look rough). If we could get a version that consolidated all of them, it wouldn't be THAT bad of a game.
