It's insane how Valheim has such good atmosphere at such low fidelity.

Thats the magic of post processing and global ilumination or also called volumetric lightning my friend. That's why even on ps1 textures you have a sense and feel of space and profudity. I learned all this stuff a few years ago messing around with unity and unreal, the importance of the scene building, lightning setup, climate, etc, they are more important than graphics in to contribute to have a live scene that's intriguing and make you wonder for every corner. i remember downloading the best quality assets, 4k textures, pbr shaders, all that good expensive stuff, but if you dont know how to setup properly the scene, and create a interesting atmosphere, its feel like dull, like if the assets are on a shelf, zero interest. So at the end of the day, graphic fidelity and quality in therms of texture and shaders, all that, is the final touch of a game.

@@alan138 You're right. I think, ordinarily, those effects are extremely expensive, so the devs recognized that in an open world setting (and third person character), people tend to pay less attention to close up textures and details. That allowed them to craft something much more immersive than high end games with AAA budgets. It does become more noticeable in the early dungeons, but even then, only if you are consciously looking for it.

I think you can't compare the two games in terms of emotional impact. Every new stage of Valheim is terrifying in such a good way.
@Mhantrax
@Mhantrax 11 ай бұрын
Totally agree. I have 1500+ hours in Valheim and eagerly await the next biome. That being said, to me, the reason you can't compare those two games is because their intended gameplay experiences are inherently different. I think calling Enshrouded a survival game does it a disservice because people go into the game expecting and comparing it to Valheim. I certainly did. It was such a shock when I played the dem that I wrote a whole KZbin reply to a video stating how it just didn't have the same environment or feel to it. It felt empty and disconnected. Well, it turns out there is a reason for that. Enshrouded is much more Breath of the Wild than Valheim. Once you start playing it like an open world adventure game with an added (best in the business) building system, the game completely transforms. But you don't HAVE to do anything. You don't have to make and use food. If you skip food in Valheim you did a thousand horrible deaths. You don't have to build in Enshrouded. If you don't build in Valheim then...you dead. The progression into new biomes aren't abjectly terrifying due to the design of being under geared and homeless when you enter the new biome. In Valheim, just taking a boat ride to try to locate a new biome puts you in hyper vigilant mode, and for good reason: serpents can kill you and force multi hour corpse retrievals and move too close to a plains biome and you are mosquito food with an even more difficult corpse retrieval. In Enshrouded, at least at this point it's developmental, none of that is even in the design. What is in the design is an open world absolutely stuffed with amazing locations that you find on your way to a quest....only to be sidetracked for hours as you make your way to that original quest marker, just like BotW.

@@Mhantrax spot on , completely agree, two very different games, just yesterday I was telling a friend who's a huge zelda fan that he'd love it, he said 'ah I'm not really into valheim style all the survival and cooking'...so I told him none of that is necessary and its not really a survival game, so now he's interested.

@@Mhantrax I feel this 100%. I hopped in Enshrouded hoping it would be like a custom map version of Valheim with Dark Souls-like dungeons, but it does feel more like Breath of the Wild for sure. As much as I love Zelda though, this game lost my interest not too far in. Mostly because the building for me felt very limited in comparison and also, since the game starts you off at the bottom of a pre rendered map, hopping in a public server was a mistake, as I quickly realized the first few areas were completely looted and world progression was already pushed outwards. On top of that, building a base feels very detached. Yeah I can fast travel, but the further in game you go, the further you feel away from a main base unless you're trying to dispurse outward in smaller camps, or build a base further out but with the consequence of the area being overleveled. In Valheim, the world is eternally explorable since it's procedurally generated. You get the gist of the biome and know what's in it, but the layout is always different. In Enshrouded and BoTW, you really only explore the map once unless you play again at a later day in life after forgotten. So I mean having a static map is cool and all, but it's easily exploitable by veteran players (which I'm sure by NOW there are some lol)
@entelin
@entelin 11 ай бұрын
@@MhantraxI think we can distill your comparison between the two games a bit. In Valheim, all of the game mechanics matter, in Enshrouded they don't. A good game design is one where the development effort you are spending on the game is impactful to the player. The Enshrouded engine has a lot of cool capabilities, but they aren't always put to use in service of the gameplay. By comparison, BotW, ToK, and Valheim, or any other great game, the resources and time spent developing the game went into things that were gameplay centric. It makes no sense to build an amazing voxel engine, if the gameplay that you then implement on top of it, doesn't really lean into it. They spent an enormous amount of time on that technology and the building systems.... but gameplay wise, building is highly optional? What?

Agreed. They aren't the same game. I hated having to constantly eat in Valheim. Not a fan of survival games. I also hated how finicky building was in Valheim. Flattening terrain or shaping terrain was so frustrating. Emshrouded is perfect for me. I get to build all I want and RP in peace. Food is important for fights. It helps a ton when gathering, too. But when you're back at your base... no reason to eat in Enshrouded.

@@Lemeilleurcmoi For me Valheim has many layers of good qualities. In the beginning you are hunting animals, gathering resources and building a shack as a base of operations. The exploration gameplay is very strong. Soon you'll be mining ores and figuring out ways to transport the heavy rocks to your base, building roads to support your cart. Then you realize you need a boat to explore more islands, the boat functions as a cart and the journey is often very chill (until a sea monster attacks your boat). Over time you've constructed so many work stations, portals, furniture, storage chests that you realize you need more space, so you build a castle. Eventually you build your way up to magic, and it feels magical because it was hard won.

Haven't play Enshrouded yet, but I can feel the pace between these 2 games is just so different. From the video alone it makes me feel that Enshrouded tilts toward RPG more than actual survival game, while Valheim will make you rationing your resources, training your discipline to maintain your stamina so you don't screw up yourself, even the game forces you to do more exploration in different biomes because you always need something from somewhere even when in the endgame. The best of all, Valheim is like around 1GB for me to download, and it baffles me how such a good game with low fidelity can give me immense immersion while having a blast with friends. The best thing so far I've done with my friend is hauling a cart filled with precious ores while being chased by a horde of random monsters and we keep yelling at each other.

I think Valheim just has much more substance and feels more like a complete game. The bosses in Valheim are vastly superior. Game progression is also superior. Every new weapon you get feels like a big deal, like getting a new sword in a Zelda game. It’s got that type of feel to it. Whereas in Enshrouded, it’s just like “oh cool. A new weapon.” Valheim also feels more dangerous and challenging. Enshrouded might look flashier and it does have really good building but in my opinion, the building is the best thing it has to offer and that’s not enough for me. Valheim is the better complete package.

Love them both. Valheim has more of a sense of danger and meaning to base building though. Yeah after I place some natural walls and maybe a moat around my base the enemies can't reach me... but at least they try and some threat exists that has to be dealt with. With Enshrouded it's fun to build a base but it's only for storage/spawn and not defense in anyway. 45 degree angles would be nice as well, 90 degrees is all you get in Enshrouded. The other big difference for me (I am talking vanilla only) is how punishing dying in Valhiem is compared to Enshrouded. If I don't keep a backup set of gear I am going to potentially have to pull off some real bullshit to get my stuff back. With Enshrouded my "critical" items like armour and weapons are retained after death, so retrieving that body is not the alt+f4 inducing experience Valheim can bring.

Enshrouded has a default setting of snapping. It is on a 2x2 grid. Turn it off and you can build anything in any way, working with as little as a 1x1 block. You can repair and rebuild any structure in the game. I recommend watching a couple videos on building in enshrouded. It can do everything Valheim can, except build off the 90-degree plane, and also offers more. Unfortunately, the game doesn't tell you much in terms of building and repairing and leaves many players lacking in the fundamentals.

But with time, maybe valheim will never be optomized and Enshrouded will find more ways to be infinitely replayable with mods and servers like how Valheim is currently. Enshrouded is considerd better based on numbers. More players currently playing and higher 24hr peak in such a short time from release. In time it will pass the all time peak possibly

When I see these two games compared, it gives me the impression that Valheim went for something that was going to be iconic and original while Enshrouded did not. Theres just so much more love you can feel that the developers put into Valheim. With Enshrouded, it looks to me like a knock off of valheim. They must of thought, "We are going to make things bigger and better with better graphics and gameplay/mechanics" BUT they forgot the "Why"... The Valheim devs made something they wanted to play. Not what they think everyone else does. Its not just something you have to show through a video, but what you have to experience for yourself.

While there are interesting similarities and comparisons to be made, Valheim has more replayability hands-down. This is because Enshrouded's map is not randomly generated and after you have finished the game, it is just the same map again if you want to do it again.
@sonoftristram
@sonoftristram 11 ай бұрын
It's just the different biomes and boss locations being in different places but other than that Valheims worlds feel pretty much the same every time simply because the world gen isn't that exciting. Mistlands are a nightmare to traverse but biomes are pretty much the same in every run. Love Valheim but I prefer a well made handcrafted map that filled with interesting locations than a randomly generated one that always feels the same.
@Sin_Alder
@Sin_Alder 11 ай бұрын
I'd argue that it hampers Valheim's replayability. All a randomly generated map means is a bland map devoid of personality. Procedural generation is nowhere near powerful enough yet to make particularly interesting maps in most cases, and it certainly applies to Valheim. It might help for game where you're expecting to play short runs over and over again, such as roguelikes (for example, Binding of Isaac or Slay the Spire), but it works against games like Valheim, where the expectation, generally speaking, is to spend longer on a single playthrough, with possible later playthroughs for people once they eventually get bored with where they were in the game. More variety is not even remotely similar to more quality. For some gameplay loops more variety, regardless of quality, is the lifeblood, but for open world survival games (particularly one where you can either respawn or are likely to survive for long periods of time), quality becomes far more important.

The progression in enshrouded just can’t compare.. it has the Diablo style loot progression where you get a dozen versions of the exact same visual item just with a purple or orange background indicating its rarity. In my opinion this is the most unsatisfying and braindead styles of loot systems. When I craft a bronze sword from the bronze I mined it feels like an unlock. It masterfully ties the survival gathering with gear and loot progression. Enshrouded fails to capture this in the same way. I really think that if you are a huge valheim fan, enshrouded is going to disappoint.

That’s the joy of Valheim! You really feel like success is earned because of the difficulty & high stakes of dying. I’ll say this…whichever weapon you’re using is going to be WAY more effective if you have a high skill level for that weapon. Dying makes you lose skill points & if you lose track of them, you can find yourself with better gear that’s barely more effective because you lost all your skill points getting the better weapons.

You are not comparing much of Enshrouded past very early game, nor all the options of doing things like cooking, or mining ore. These are both great games, in different and similar ways at times. Both open worlds, but Enshrouded is a crafted world that is more fleshed out with rpg elements. Valheim procedurally generated is random, but empty of unique locations, numerous npc, story missions, and crafted locations. Valheim big loss is it's taking over 18 months for 1 biome. I hope Enshrouded doesn't do the same thing because I look forward to updates for it. They are different games in regard to multiplayer also. People need to stop thinking Enshrouded should be the same and realize it's a CO-OP multiplayer design. It's not open PVP like Conan. The story is you are the survivors trying to rebuild. It's not exiled criminals like Conan, or Valheim's prove yourself worthy individually story. It's a co-op adventure in a sandbox filled with themepark quests. Enshrouded uses it's own game engine, which is impressive. I give them points on that. Valheim wins on trees falling on heads though. If that's your focus, I can't argue with that. The shroud is better than how Mistlands is though. That Mist is annoying in Mistlands. I feel the shroud mist is a better balance.

If you are really asking, it's because you will need to chop down 250 trees to build your base in Valheim, and about 25 in Enshrouded. You will be really effin sick and tired of chopping trees in Valheim. The grind is a poor substitute for actual content, which Enshrouded is packed with.

I’ve never played Enshrouded before, but what I love most about Valheim are the memories of doing silly things with my friends. For example, after we defeated the second boss, we decided to explore the map by boat. The first new biome we discovered was the Plains. At the time, we didn’t realize the game required a step-by-step approach. I thought, 'Wow, this biome is beautiful!'-and then I got one-shot by a mosquito. My two friends tried to run, but they ended up dying too. We laughed so hard, especially after dying four more times trying to retrieve our corpses. Moments like these make us laugh every time we think about them, and not many games can create that kind of experience.

you should def. try it, tho i've invested a coupled of hundreds hours in Valheim and reaching my first hundred in Enshrouded soon, both games play completly diffrently but are an amazing experience in their own ways, yes Valheim got water and water traveling but in Enshrouded you can fly which makes traveling much more fun than in Valheim, because in Valheim sea traveling is slow. In Enshrouded you are far more mobile. I dont think its right to compare them as a contest, they are both amazing games. And since Valheim is in EA since '21 and Enshrouded just came in EA and got as much or even more content than Valheim does at this stage, i think thats noticeable too.

Valheim will always be a great game, some of the comparisons made Valheim the star others Enshrouded. The thing I like about both of them is the differences and they are not knockoffs of another game. Valheim is unique so that is runs on lower end computers and also has multiplayer dedicated servers. Games that just have co-op in my opinion are not great. I prefer multiplayer and Valheim fill that niche. Enshrouded has just come out so developing it to release will be an interesting journey. I also have Nightingale to play with as well. 2024 is going to be real good.

Valheim is far far superior than Enshrouded! I won't mention everything but the biggest part of it is the amount of hand holding they give you in Enshrouded. Those definitely take out a lot of fun from a survival crafting game. Another is the lack of certain physics like having ventilation for smoke. Lastly, you don't really need to take care of your home in Enshrouded because it will never be in danger of attacks. Enshrouded is 90% typical RPG and 10% survival crafting.

Valheim was wonderful for the Viking experience. One thing that's funny is the character models were built human sized where it feels like Enshrouded the character models are shorter like Dwarves. Other than that it seems more visually beautiful, but also gamier, like things are streamlined to be a better game feeling, and less hardcore.

Valheim - better game physics, better lighting, better exploration, every time you can play on different map (procedural generation) Enshrouded - better graphics, a more diverse world, bigger game, handmade, so a more polished map of the world, better development prospects for the game in the future I think Enshrouded is better game but Valheim is still great game worth to play and without Valheim we won't have Enshrouded because in many aspects this game based on Valheim mechanics.

I personally really like Valheim's visuals. So many games try for hyper-realism, it seems kinda drab and dull after a while (and as cool as super-detailed textures are, it can look kinda wrong when the lighting can't match the detail and give depth to it). Makes me really appreciate a stylized look

In terms of graphics, it's no competition that Enshrouded is the winner. What's good about Valheim is its low demand with the system requirements which is favorable to many. They have their fare share of PROS and CONS but overall both are great! Currently playing Enshrouded since Valheim is falling behind on the new updates but me and my friends are going back to the Viking life in a heartbeat if they pump up on the updates.

Detailed textures does not always mean better graphics imo. Valheim is very stylized, and imo sticks out from all the realism-via-textures visuals that are everywhere. Not that one's objectively better than the other, but personally I don't find attempts at photorealism to always be the most immersive or enjoyable (and certainly not very unique.)

A comparison from the perspective of this video its fan based: Valheim, now 5 years old, still lacks substantial content, while Enshrouded, despite being just 1 year old, already boasts more. Let’s discuss what was highlighted in this video. We saw Valheim’s best features, which make up 98% of the game, with only 1% focused on ship and water mechanics and another 1% on bosses. The combat in Valheim often boils down to spamming mouse1 to attack or simply shooting arrows - not exactly fun gameplay. Now, let’s talk about what you’ll spend most of your time doing in Valheim: crafting a cart and mining ore all day - so entertaining! You mine for hours just to one-shot a boss. Without mining, progressing in the game is nearly impossible, making the gameplay feel like 99% mining and 1% actual play. In contrast, Enshrouded offers superior graphics, combat, building mechanics, and overall content. Valheim fans with low-end PCs might experience Enshrouded at 15 fps and compare it unfavorably to Valheim’s simplistic graphics, which even lower-tier potatoes can handle. This has led some to defend Valheim simply because it’s accessible for potato setups, even if it lacks stuff. When people talk about replayability in Valheim, it’s almost laughable. Creating a new save just means ores and water are in different spots, but with the same repetitive mobs and the same lifeless green biome - an experience suited for those satisfied with basic graphics capabilities. Meanwhile, Enshrouded introduces major updates every 2-3 months, adding new biomes and making the world feel more alive with pets, animals, and NPCs. This steady pace of development keeps the game fresh, ensuring the world feels vibrant instead of being the same lifeless, barren landscape. the most funny thing is the price on steam while enshrouded is worth it but not valheim. I got bored after one day in Valheim, while I played Enshrouded 24/7 for an entire week.
@theperfectbeing
@theperfectbeing 2 ай бұрын
Agreed, I have both games and I don't know wtf the Valheim fans are talking about for graphic comparison. Wandering through the woods in the dark in enshrouded with those giant mushroom creatures half glowing scurrying around with northern lights overhead giving ray tracing styled glimpses of light is 10 times better than anything I've seen in Valheim. Looking out over the land from the top of a tower before gliding off over the shroud where you see all the monsters scurrying around in mists. Also they showed a single floor crypt as Enshroudeds "Dungeon" and not the Hallowed halls, one of which is basically an underground city like a scene from LOTR or dungeons from Tears of the Kingdom. They didn't showcase anyone kiting a group of mobs and using the glider to gain distance and then weaving in spells or ranged attacks or using the grappling hook to grab platforms. Valheim is the superior survival experience but as far as graphics, crafting and exploration goes, Enshrouded is on another planet.
