I believe it. I’ve even seen your “reputable” game shops screwing it up or installing 2 left or right hinges on their custom consoles. Very sad when people spend hundreds thinking they are receiving something top of the line. They’re very simple once you understand exactly how to remove/install and most importantly, why it’s done that way.

Feel the need to comment because out of EVERY video I’ve seen on GBA SP hinge replacement, you’re the ONLY one that actually knows what they’re talking about. You were a lifesaver for helping me get a gift ready in time for my friend’s birthday. You’ve opened my eyes, now I can’t watch a GBA SP restoration video without noticing the brute force methods, cracked shells that could have been avoided, and incorrect hinge behavior 😬

This video is a treasure man. I of course broke my original tribal shell since I didn't know this and the tutorial just prompted you to literally push with the screwdriver non-stop in the closed position until it pops off. Ended up having to manually break the remaining pieces of the original shell around the actual hinge to free it. I'm saving this video for future reference, you are a hero!

Thank god for this video - I've only seen one other KZbinr ever mention the console needing to be in the open position and they breezed past it because it wasn't the focus of their video. I watch this vid every time I do a reshell and I will continue to watch it. I do have a question though and I haven't been able to find any answer - when I reinstall the hinges, they work great opening and closing the console but they don't make that satisfying click sound. Have I broken them? I know that the left and right are in the correct sides and they do their job, so is it possible to install them upside down? I hope that doesn't sound stupid but I'm out of ideas. Thanks for the tutorial!

No there’s no upside down (opening of the hinge cap doesn’t matter if it faces back or front). Different aftermarket shells have different tolerances between the faceplate shell and the front upper shell where they meet each other (the portion where the hinge goes thru) and can make opening and closing not quite as smooth as the oem shells which may be causing your issue. On the poorer quality shells I’ll sand a bit on the top shell where it meets the faceplate shell.

Great video. Someone HELP me. I've just done my first replacement did exactly how the video shows. And the new case is rubbing on the hinge bit which makes it creek and rub against each other basically scratching the plastic off each other. Maybe the shell was slightly too big or anything I've done wrong. Baring in mind the shell was an aftermarket off ebay.

I built my first custom sp last month and no matter what i did, the hinges never lined up. No way to tell if the hinges are wrong and even tho i had the shell lined up "right" to get the hinges in they just never fully went in and i had to use pliers to force them in. Theyre in because i forced em in but they arent lined up right and no matter what i tried i couldnt turn em while they were in to line em up. They work but it clicks open less than halfway open but does click fully open where it should surprisingly. The shell is just a cheap aftermarket one so I guarantee thats why the hinges dont fit but everything i find on the internet doesnt help me at all cuz nobody ive seen on youtube has this problem and fixes it they all just put them in with no problems like its supposed to work

I just replaced the entire shell of my son's gameboy but didn't realize there were no original hinges. Do I have to take the whole thing apart again to put the hinges in??

I can’t seem to get my left hinge in the open position no matter how hard I twist it, any tips?

That’s usually a good sign that those hinges have ALOT of life left in them. If I can’t get it by hand I have 2 pairs of pliers to change the position of the hinge. Just ensure the keyways are lined up and the “swoop” is just like in the video and you’re good to go.

Are the Prestige hinges from RetroSix any good?

I personally have never tried them. I’ll always side with the factory hinges tho. Also, retrosix is known to have not only quality issue with certain products but also questionable business practices within the community, notably stealing peoples work and claiming as their own. I personally don’t buy any of their products.

I just got them. They only really click open no snapping shut, and once they open, they don't lock at that angle, it moves pretty loosely to the fully open ange
