Are there any sports games that you think are worthy of a full review?
@thomasffrench36399 ай бұрын
Honestly, taking out 100 games is so nice, it makes me even less intimidated to start playing Game Boy games. I love series like this that cover entire libraries of consoles. Cutting out sports titles is for the best, because although I enjoy playing sports, I never saw the appeal of playing a video game based off sports, when you can just play them in real life. Sure, you might get the experience of playing it in a professional setting, but I find that weak justification for playing sports games. Also there’s a series that covers the Famicom called Famidaily and the Famicom was the first console to have yearly sports game releases and the person covering them got so sick of Baseball. So good call on just straight skipping those. Also, Link’s Awakening being overrated is a hot take I didn’t know I needed. It’s like one of those games that doesn’t feel as highly regarded as it actually is, so calling it overrated is not something you even think about, but it is highly enough regarded to actually get that status.

Honestly, after I played through it as a kid, I didn't really think of it again until years later when I started running into more and more people on forums and message boards who were talking about how amazing the game was, and I was like "Really? Alright, I guess I'll give it another look." Each time I play it, I'm reminded again about why it didn't blow my socks off the last time, so it continues to baffle me why it is viewed in such reverence by so many people. I just don't get it, I guess. 🤷♂

Links Awakening is imo a Nintendo masterpiece because of its risk taking with the property and its overall tone and mood. When you think Zelda you don't typically think Twin Peaks. And yet Twin Peaks served as a gigantic inspiration for the game. The ending alone was melancholy and intensely deep for a Nintendo game. It kept away from the Ganon routine and instead focused on an inward exploration of dreams. While true, the menus are combersome, I applaud the efforts of what they were trying to achieve. Had the system had more buttons (something the remake addresses) the experience overall would have improved. For me, Links Awakening is perhaps my most favorite Zelda game of all. It strayed from formula, tried reinvention, experimented with narrative, and attempted more complex inventory mechanics. Thats my opinion at least :)

All fair points. This is a game where my apathy definitely puts me in the minority, as I think most people would share your sentiment. This is another well-made game that just didn't land with me nearly as well as it did for many other people.

Thank you for hitting on pretty much every aspect I was thinking when I was reflecting on why it's one of my favorite games of all time. Very much respect MrMatthews opinion and appreciate his reasoning, it's a titles that's been covered from from to back in so many different ways that it seems redundant to just look at it again for no other sake.

Link's Awakening was a very well-made game. I think it's a better game than Link to the Past, for all the reasons you mentioned here.

George Foremans Boxing was pretty much Punchout in Gameboy form. Pretty decent tbh, but very nice (and productive) way to get 100 games smacked off your list.

Not gonna lie, I was really looking forward to seeing how you were going to cover all those sports games and still keep these videos interesting 😂. I think knocking them all out like this was definitely for the best though. As for Link’s Awakening, it’s one of the few Zelda games I’ve never made it through despite trying many times. I don’t think it’s bad by any means, it just never clicked with me, and strangely, this is coming from someone who adores the Oracle GBC Zelda games. I still want to try the Switch remake though. Excellent work as always, my friend. Love this video series!

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't say Link's Awakening isn't a good game and I don't even really dislike it. But I think the other Zelda games are sooo much better ... I'm just not seeing what everyone else is loves about this game 😅
@sargesmash12 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm one of those "Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda" folks. For me, it's a great mix of what I loved about A Link to the Past (basically a 1a to LA) and the original game. But I also kinda get where you're coming from on it. Everyone has different tastes! And I don't blame you for not talking about it - it's absolutely been done to death at this point. Also, going to say I'm really enjoying your content - the algorithm finally saw fit to recommend your stuff to me and it's always great to find an excellent new-to-me channel.

Thanks, Sarge! Yeah, for a game as popular and well-loved as Link's Awakening, I figured I'd leave the discussion to the people who have much more interesting things to say about it than I do.

Amen to skipping all the sports games. I rarely find them appealing and even the ones that have sucked me in from time to time are more of a passing fad than anything else. As someone that used to get poké bombed by her child from the ages of 5 until probably around 13, I could definitely do without ever hearing about pokémon ever again. This video about the videos you're never going to do made my day 😊
@AuthorativeMrM9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think even people who *LOVE* sports games would struggle to keep a full video about them interesting, and I think most people wouldn't click on the video in the first place. Skipping all those games is just better for everyone ☺

Nostaliga is why I like Zela: Link's Awakening so much. It was my first Zelda game, and the first Game Boy game I owned, and it blew me away. Still hold it in high regard. Game's a bit of slog in the later parts (esp the Eagle's Tower dungeon), but the final part is my fave part of the series, esp the boss and ending. Pokemon, never bothered with past the original Game Boy titles. I tried the GBA games, but they didn't gel with me. First four games are solid, and all I really care about. I don't blame you for not covering sports games tbh.

When mentioning the "four" Pokemon games I was referring to Red, Blue, Gold and Silver. But I also want to add, I really enjoyed the Trading Card Game adaption/game too.

I always thought of Link's Awakening as one if my favorites, though when I played the switch remake, I didn't like it as much. Maybe it just hasn't aged as well, plus I think "A Link Between Worlds" is a much better handheld Zelda game (that actually has Zelda in it.)

LOL 😂 Nintendo World cup was my jam and it still is to date. I can pop that in anytime on either the NES or Gameboy, and enjoy it. Also, i gotta admit that most games in the game boy catalog had decent sprites, at least for what it was capable of. Top notch production Mr. M 👍👏

It seemed like everyone back in school, loved Pokémon. And my sob story-I never had a gameboy or any kind of handheld device growing up. To be fair, I kinda feel good that I skipped out of the Pokémon days lol C’mon, be a “sport” and play those simulation games. At least they aren’t live simulations 😂 Link’s Awakening hasn’t aged too well, but it did make strides in the Zelda series, to complement along with ALTTP I think the appeal of Link’s awakening, is that it was the first Zelda title to be played on the go. And we all know you’re gonna be reviewing the game down the line (well, you did a review of it haha)
@AuthorativeMrM8 ай бұрын
Yeah, this will probably be my last word on Link's Awakening, lol. Everyone loves this game so much, I can't risk tarnishing my pristine reputation by speaking ill of one of the GameBoy's most beloved titles...

The sport’s games that I’ve got were all presents from my parents who had no idea what they were doing lol. I’m wondering if those games were cheaper than the others 🤔 (I truly hope so or that will cause some trauma to me) 😂😂😂😂

Hiya! I also consider myself a casual Pokémon game fan. I was really into gens 1, 2, and the first pinball game, but I barely touched any of the newer games. The last one I really put any time into was Pokémon Sword, and it was a gift. My favorite Pokémon? Scyther. Because Scyther es verde 👌👌 😂😂 ya killed me with the sports quiz. There are def a few sports games with a surprising amount of depth to them. Skate or Die 2 comes to mind. Link's Awakening was fun! I don't consider it a top tier Zelda title, but I still enjoyed playing through the remake :] Great video, dude!

@thomasffrench36399 ай бұрын
I was about to mention that it was rich coming from a Mega Man fan calling Pokémon being the same game, but right as I thought it, you brought up Mega Man which was pretty funny. I personally don’t mind being sold the same game, but it annoys me when Pokémon fans (or let’s be real, pretty much every franchise except for Mario post N64) give Mega Man games shit for being the same game when they never do it for franchises they like. Probably because they will argue that the same game is actually different, when in reality it just has prettier graphics (looking at you Super Mario World). Nothing is wrong with formulaic series, although I think making them yearly releases like AC or Call of Duty is a bad call. Good thing Mega Man stopped the yearly release for Mega Man 7 and 8.
@AuthorativeMrM9 ай бұрын
In reality I prefer it if game series don't shake things up too much from game to game, so the Mega Man series is perfect for me! The Mega Man X series kind of pushed me to the limit on that, though...
@thomasffrench36399 ай бұрын
@@AuthorativeMrM that is completely fair. I’m personally in the middle where I think some franchises like Final Fantasy is appealing because they change it up, but also find appeal in something like Dragon Quest which does have hints of innovation, especially in the first 5 games, but generally is about polishing the formula
