0:41 HOLY SHIT WHAT?? IS THIS REALLY RUNNING ON A GAMEBOY? If so, this is a total game changer!
@gravityhamster88052 ай бұрын
The Gameboy is an awesome piece of musical tech, I can vouch.
@YeOldeBelmont2 ай бұрын
No, the drums at the very least are too high fidelity for the Gameboy to handle. It's likely just handling the 8-bit synths and samples, output to a computer or external sampler, then mixed down.
@pouale2 ай бұрын
@@YeOldeBelmont Little Sound DJ (the software he's using) can actually play back samples with a sample rate of 11kHz and 4 bit depth. It can do that because most of the processing power is used for the audio engine unlike what you would see in a game boy video game where most of the processing power would be used for other stuff (animations, game physics...) You can read more on the topic on the official LSDJ wiki if you're curious !
@gravityhamster88052 ай бұрын
@@pouale Yeah. In fact, if you look at the oscilloscope view on the right-hand side of the screen, it's reacting to the drum samples that are being played through it. Same with the synth pad. You can also kind of hear the characteristic crunchiness that comes through when you play a sample through LSDJ's sample engine. Not to mention that the bass instrument is interlaced with the drums, because they are being played through the same channel so they can't ever play on top of each other. Maybe Laamaa could confirm, but I'm almost positive this is all pure Gameboy. I'm sure it's probably further post-processed after recording, but I don't think any sounds have been added in post.

in most actual early 8-bit games like the NES or GameBoy they had to limit how many instruments were used in the music because they had to keep some sound effects for the actual game, think of it like half of a band trying to play a song while the other half tries to provide sound effects for a drunk Italian beating the shit out of a turtle. whereas this Gameboy is able to use ALL its sound channels for the music.
@alvin_row2 ай бұрын
@@gr4n737 This is kinda true but not fully. Most games did use all sound channels for music, but channels would get "lent" to SFX when needed. Hence why the Super Mario Bros melody stops for a second when you pick up a coin.

This is incredibly done! I've not used LSDJ before, but I'm guessing this is so full due to pre-sampled chords and layering drum samples with the chords (given that the drum hits coincide with the chord hits usually)? I'd love to see the filesize if that's true, curious how much sample space squares take up - or perhaps it's software sample layering given that the whole gameboy is dedicated to the music? But nonetheless, this sounds amazing!
@laamaa2 ай бұрын
Yep, LSDJ can play two samples at the same time. If it would be converted to a register dump file, it'd probably be quite large as the tune runs on a stupidly fast tick rate too :P
