A clarification that really should have been made years ago: at the time of this video's release, I hadn't done a single segment run yet. Avoiding killing the Core (letting Curly deal the final blow) wasn't discovered until the video was almost finished, so that segment was recorded separately. I hadn't thought the distinction was important enough to clarify at the time since the run is functionally identical from that point forward, but I've never felt comfortable with that justification. I'm sorry for being dishonest, and I've since completed an actual single-segment run to atone for my sins.

I haven't seen another comment mentioning this, but you technically only need to kill two Kurara (giant jellies) in the Grasslands due to a speedrunning technique known as Chako Skip. Whenever you pause in Cave Story, you actually lose your i-frames. While usually this isn't helpful, you can actually use this to get some high damage boosts. Outside of Chako's house there are 3 bats. After resting up, exit the house and do a full jump at the last possible block. If everything worked correctly, the bats will be up against the floating wall each at different heights. Hit the bats and right as you reach the peak of your knock back, pause. Unpause and you should get boosted again, repeat until you land on the floating platform and jump over to victory. I should note, this is also possible on Cave Story+ by pausing the game and selecting the map from the item menu, if you use the more direct map button it doesn't work.

Edit: IMPORTANT. You only need 2 jellyfish juice if you have 5 or more hp, because it's possible to double damage boost (pause in freeware, pause -> map in +) to skip using the first in Chako's house. Story time! I tried to do this a few years ago, but with the added challenge of 1 hp only. I got to Chako's house. Getting the jellyfish juice without being hit is insanely difficult, even if you allow yourself to kill the enemy that drops it.

Yeah, it's pretty tricky to get the setup right, and since you have to open the map from the pause(?) menu on CS+, it's counterintuitive to even figure out how to do enough damage boosts to make it up. The original isn't as hard to discover, because you only have to pause.

There is another damage boost skip in hell, if you are quick enough. You can damage boost through the big red spikes (where the rock throwing angels are), saving some time and (maybe) some damage. I haven't personally done it, but I've seen it done. If you can collect the two hearts, you might come up with a net increase? Edit: 11:31 for timestamp, just to be clear.

Ooof. This sounds like a really difficult challenge. See, the thing about Cave Story is that its game mechanics are specifically designed to _encourage_ killing every enemy you see. Since you drop weapon EXP every time you get hit, and you're likely to get hit many times over the course of any normal playthrough, the very design of the game itself subtly pushes you to kill every enemy in your path. Unless you play _much_ more carefully than the game expects of you, you'll have to kill as much as possible to make sure you're well-equipped enough to fight the next boss. This is _also_ the reason why nearly every boss in the game continually spawns weaker enemies; it's so you can rack up easy kills to get health, missles, and weapon EXP. Basically, Cave Story is a game whose very design discourages the possibility of a pacifist run. You're _supposed_ to play the game without showing any mercy, and doing otherwise makes it incredibly difficult to even survive.

@Ian Lohan That's a pretty big oversimplification, TBH. Cave Story was so massively influential over indie games in general that it's impossible that its few similarities to Undertale are coincidental. In particular, both games have extremely similar art direction and character designs, and they both have the exact same story structure. In both games, the plot starts out with you already in the middle of the main conflict, but knowing absolutely nothing about the characters, plot, or setting. As you play both games, you gradually unravel the wider mystery through isolated story beats and character interactions. I'm also pretty sure there's an interview somewhere where Toby Fox directly stated that he got the idea for sparing mechanic when he thought about Toroko's unavoidable in-game death, but don't quote me on that.

10:49 you can enter the next room, collect some hearts, exit by going upward using the jetpack, then re-enter and all hearts will respawn. It's an good way of maxing out your HP for the next room. Enemies will also respawn however.

Actually, it would be possible, since I have done this very run. It’s just super tedious, I advise you to bomb kill the stalnox in hyrule castle to get the hyrulian shield, then you rapidly sheild bomb damage block as you kill the enemies. Koga can be beaten with bombs and magnesis.

It just occurred to me that at 11:22, you can take the lower path without having to kill the Mesa that's blocking the way: By boosting into the side of it and spamming the boost button, you can force your way through without having to kill it. I can't blame you for not knowing that, of course, because it's not at all obvious that this should even be possible. But it is!

Can you beat any Pokémon firered and leaf green without catching a single Pokémon? At first I thought this would be easy since XY literally gives you 3 Pokémon and Sun and Moon have ride Pokémon making hms obsolete, however these games have mandatory captures with the main legendaries. Let’s go doesn’t have this problem but it also forces you to have certain pokemon to access the gyms. Which means that the only games that this challenge seems possible on are firered and leafgreen because you gain access to fossil Pokémon, fighting Pokémon and magikarp so you have to plan the route around getting Pokémon based on the hms you’ll need.

Black 2/White 2 has no mandatory captures and I believe all you need in terms of HMs are Surf and Strength, so just start a solo run with Oshawott and you're golden. It's the only game where you can do a true glitchless solorun.

Was hanging out with my friend and her siblings and at one point her brother asked me what games I liked to play. I showed him cave story -the original one, not plus or 3d (at that point I'd reached the blood stained sanctuary). He looked at it and watched me play it until I reached Ballos' 2nd stage and died (I just couldn't beat that part at the time). He turns to me and tells me that "This isn't a game. Or a good one at least." I ask him why and he nit-picks about the graphics for a bit. I note to him that 3D exist and then ask him what games he like to play. He answers very simply "Fortnite." I was rather disappointed. He was 13. Then again I'm not sure what I had been expecting (not saying that all kids don't have an eye for video games just... This was kinda sad to me...) (Note: I'm not saying Fortnite is a bad game... It's just kinda sad that certain games with a lot of hard work are... Belittled when so much has been put into them. This game was made by one person... Right?)

Can you beat Kirby Superstar 100% without jumping? It's a run i recently did on the ds remake that is a lot of fun to figure out and i was wondering if the original version is possible too. Edit: Spring Breeze, The arena, Revenge of meta knight, Dyna blade, and Milky way wishes are all possible to complete without jumping in superstar ultra on the ds and there were other game modes added to Superstar ultra that dont appear in the original, of those modes, The true arena and certain helpers in helper to hero are the only things that are possible to do jumpless as far as i can tell.

@@DrRank well for my run, the act of pressing the jump button and causing the specific animation and sound effect of kirby's jump was banned, so as long as a move didn't feature those effects seen, anything else was allowed. this includes the uppercut attack when you have fighter ability which launches you into the air, and slide kicking off of enemies to bounce into the air. If you have the wing ability, fire ability, or wheel ability, you can use a dash attack into a wall which will cause you to bounce back and get into the air without jumping(provided you mash the y button fast enough before falling back onto the ground) Once in the air, Kirby's flutter ability becomes available because instead of jumping to gain height, he inflates himself and flaps his arms. Abilities like wing and jet also help out with his aerial movement. I also discovered that the yoyo ability can help you get into the air without jumping if there is nothing above you. Basically, the no jump run becomes all about finding and managing abilities that can help you get into the air without the dreaded jump animation playing, and avoiding certain softlock areas where you can't do anything but jump. Like how the only way to get out of a cannon, or get off of wheelie rider is to jump out, the same animation and sound effect play, so you have to make sure to get hit off of wheelie rider by an enemy and make sure the cannon you're in fires. The only issues with this run are swimming out of water, springs, and bouncing off your helper's head. all of these things have the same animation as jumping, With swimming and springs both being needed to fully complete the game. I consider these to be not really jumps because even though they look the same as regular jumps, they are something that happens automatically without any input from the jump button being needed, kinda like when kirby jumps in a cutscene outside of the players control. Anytime you get close enough to the top of the water or too close to the top of a spring, the player loses control of kirby for a second while he rises into the air, you could be pressing nothing and this would still happen, unlike a controlled jump. So, we could argue semantics about what a jump actually means but i choose to define it as pressing the jump button to cause kirby to rise into the air with that specific animation and sound effect.

Yeah, I actually tried it on the SNES, and it's impossible. You start each game mode in Normal form, which has no vertical movement options except jumping. Also, Gourmet Race. Need I say more?

@@DrRank If you're in normal form you can achieve vertical movement by slide-kicking an enemy which bounces you into the air and you can start fluttering. and gourmet race is possible to win without jumping. You can beat the first level by just running and fluttering when you walk off an edge, the second level you can't beat but if you wait for dedede to finish itll automatically take you to level 3, and level 3 is possible if you flutter at certain times while dropping off edges, if you get enough food in level 1 and 3 you can still beat dedede and complete gourmet race.

I highly doubt it's possible - most hacks that try and simulate that challenge need to edit levels to change it. Most notably Sonic 2 XL, where they add an item that nullifies the effect of rings you've collected after parts with large amounts of unavoidable rings - they wouldn't need to include that item if you could avoid getting any rings, unless just to make the challenge "easier". I *do* think it could be possible in Sonic 1 though, due to the design being different enough. Then I just remembered Spring Yard... Hm. I'm beginning to think it's legitimately impossible for any Sonic game - I thought about SA1 and SA2 but those have moments where you're required to use the light dash, and I'm not sure if all light dash segments are skippable in SA2(actually I'm certain they aren't - the item you need to be able to perform the skips comes later than the light speed shoes, which is always followed by a light speed tutorial in that game. Shadow doesn't even get the skip item!) My final guess would have to be Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations? Since any game with the light dash as a required upgrade is out, and Heroes has required light speed segments, and Shadow we're not certain whether it should be 100% or not - if so, then it's out. I don't know enough about Lost World to make an accurate guess, though I think some required wisps force you to collect rings, and Forces - despite actually playing it unlike Lost World - I know even less about. That all said, any game strictly using 2D is probably out due to how the 2D level design tends to work and the lack of the 3rd dimension to make skips easier, so the DS Sonic games, Mania, and 4 would also be out, I say Colors since it's mostly 3D and any time a Wisp would be required I don't think it'd force you to collect rings? And Generations, while mostly 2D, doesn't ever require use of the light dash which is of limited use in the game, and I feel like the game's design is just right for a no-rings run. I'm not saying they are possible, I'm just saying my bets are on them. I am now tempted to watch a video on Sonic 2 ringless since I feel it exists so I also doubt the games I listed as impossible *really are* impossible, so take what I say with a grain of salt. It's just, unlike Sonic, Mario doesn't tie his health to coins, and it's rare that the level will take control away from the player in such a way he gets launched through coins. Sonic does, however - in such a run, without a shield, every hit is a 1HKO, and even then rings are *everywhere* and you will usually find yourself hitting a booster directly into a loop in more modern games that will force you to collect rings, or similar things to that. I won't say it's impossible to do it in any Sonic game, I've seen crazier, it's just as a huge fan of Sonic I highly doubt it. I still want to see him try though >3>
