If you speed up the main menu background music to 20x, it plays the same tune as the Famicom Disk System startup. Fun fact.

Still can't believe the GameCube is old. I vividly remember hearing about the "Nintendo Dolphin" and imagining how amazing it was going to be, and then being blown away by the graphics on Luigi's Mansion, all while being shocked that I was playing a SEGA game (Super Monkey Ball) on a Nintendo console… as a launch title, no less! Never since then have I ever been so amazed by a console… It's insane that it turns 20 years old this year. It still retains that futuristic feel to me, two decades later.

I'm also very surprised that this wasn't synthesized in real-time! I always thought the GameCube could play this sound from its synth but maybe not?
@Nitrocosm3 жыл бұрын
It puzzles me. There is nothing in the startup sound that the synth couldn't easily replicate. I have to wonder why they did it that way.

Bro this is an amazing video thank you for making this. Something I realized is that the music at 6:50 reminds me a lot of the DSi settings menu. There is something about these desolate themes with silence being broken by extraterrestrial sounds that bring me a lot of nostalgia.

It's actually kinda crazy, really! I do GameCube BIOS corruptions, so I've had my fair share of earrape moments from the intro lol Fun fact: there are three versions of the Initial Program Loader (IPL.bin)! I'll be replying to this comment with the differences between the versions, so stay tuned!
@treyborden41513 жыл бұрын
*IPL v1.0* This version can be found on early NTSC DOL-001 consoles only. You'll know if you have a 1.0 IPL from the Game Menu, as the ring (and "PRESS START" cube text) will appear pink or red. The echo during the menu transition sound is much more prominent, and the actual menu music has a fade in/out.
@treyborden41513 жыл бұрын
*IPL v1.1* This version can be found on later DOL-001 consoles. I believe PAL v1.0 shares a lot of similarities with this version. Once again, you can use the Game Menu to identify a v1.1 IPL - the formerly pink/red ring/"PRESS START" cube text will now be purple. This version reduces the menu transition echo and removes the fade in/out from the menu music, which are other means of identifying a v1.1 IPL. It also adds a small touch to the Memory Card screen: the grid background will only show on the selected memory card, whereas on IPL v1.0, the grid background remains static (as is with all other menus.)
@treyborden41513 жыл бұрын
*IPL v1.2* This variant is found only on the DOL-101 revision. It's very similar to IPL v1.1 (purple Game Menu and all), but has multiple under-the-hood changes to further combat piracy and homebrew on the system.

The background ambiance on the Gamecube's main menu is actually the boot jingle for the Famicom Disk System slowed down to 1/16th of its speed.

Hey, interesting analysis. You keep telling us you were nearly certain it was synthesized in real time, well I was wondering what about it made you think that?
@Nitrocosm3 жыл бұрын
The audio has all of the characteristics of synthesized audio with no sounds that would necessitate a fully pre-recorded piece. Long pad synths or guitars or other sound effects that last most of the duration of the clip would make more sense. The xylophone, pizzicato strings, and other quick sounds would make the startup more efficiently storable as a sequence that plays all of the notes using far shorter audio samples.
