I like using grass knot, flash cannon and hydro pump on Empoleon because it becomes a really good check to bulky water types and fairy types.

You play in a scene where Fairy types don't instantly just run away from Steel types? Ice Beam is better coverage imo. You know the fairy is going to switch and can predict with it accordingly. Edit: should have stated that I meant using Ice Beam over Flash Cannon.

I like grass knot because most people think it’s safe to switch In their water type on Empoleon, which happens all the time. Most of the Pokémon that ice beam hits for supper effective damage can out speed Empoleon and hit it with a super effective move first.

@@bennconner1195 I 100% agree on Grass Knot. I was debating about Flash Cannon, if that's the scene you are in then yeah cool, but for me Ice Beam has been better because of predicted switches. You are right about them outspeeding but that's why you catch on the switch and then switch yourself.

Interesting thought on the knock-off/focus sash interaction. Would it be too strong if knock off ignored the triggered effects of items like focus sash, rocky helmet, red card, etc? Or is that niche enough that it wouldn't make too much of a difference? My main worry would be that it would make colbur berry basically unplayable. (not that colbur is a super meta item, but it would be completely trash with the change)

Why doesn't empoleon have a steel type move

Steel only hits 3 types super effectively. Ice, Rock and Fairy. Rock is already covered by water, so you'd only be running it for potential ice/fairy checks, which aren't going to stay in and fight Empoleon anyway, because it resists all their stabs and most of their movepools. Not to mention there's not many ice or fairy Pokémon that get ran competitively. Grass Knot hard checks some of the meta threats as well that can't be smacked by Surf or Ice Beam. You could run flash cannon if the competitive scene you are in has a lot of Tera Fairy but more often than not, they aren't going to commit in front of Empoleon either. (And they still will take heavy damage from Surf anyway.) TL:DR: Steel way better at defense than offense.

But you don't see many running steel moves just for Fairy, unless their 4th move slot is largely irrelevant, then it's good coverage OR Fairy is one of their answers then you run Iron Head/Flash Cannon to catch them on the predicted switch in. In this case, Empoleon doesn't need Flash Cannon, as it resists Fairy so they will run away and it can still hit them heavy with water stab. Grass Knot takes care of any of the plethora of bulky water types that can switch in to resist Surf/Ice Beam, especially major threats to Empoleon like the Water/Ground types.
