The boss fishes are summoned when you have half the amount of money of the next sea. It will not summon if u use 5 gems to summon it beforehand.

Btw the level 999 deep water crew member is unlocked by connecting your Facebook account to your game. It gives you a +250% fish value bonus and is upgraded by having friends play the game

Also epic fish don’t appear when you have enough to move on, the small blue bar under the amount of money you have represents how close you are to deeper waters. I think the epic fish appears once you have half the amount to move on.

I’m basically where you are in progress of the game and I’ve realized that I make more money in 10 minutes of playing the game the 7 hours of being idle plus the 2x multiplier so its really just annoying

I have been starting the game in my emulator, getting a multiplier and minimizing it with the sound off. It's how I got the fishing exp.
