lol, pretty humorous that one of the complaints about Skyrim being in the top 10 is it not being old enough when Skyrim originally came out in 2011, but GTA5 was fine, a 2013 game. At least have some consistency guys.

I can Honestly say I wasnt looking at this list through "nostalgia glasses" and just bitching about old games not getting deserved credit. A good game is a good no matter how old or new it is. I have actually played most of the games on this top 300 list. What really gets me is the ranks some of these games got and how there wasn't a criteria standard set. We weren't told why these games were on this list.That would have been nice to know. Even if the games contribution to the gaming industry was a shit load of sales, tell us that. And for the record, if any baseball game deserves to be on here, it is The Show, period. Saying Baseball Stars deserves it and not The Show is nostalgia glasses.

Its very clear that the people that made that list are not gamers, new or old the more i think about it. I agree there needs to be some time of Time period that a game should be out before even being looked at for a list like this. to put things like WoW above FF7 for instance, LMAO are you kidding?. It is sad to see a Gaming Magazine drop the ball on something like this when Gaming is literally their job to report on. Sad day for us gamers, but some good will come from it I am sure. I hope some of those people pick up some of those games they haven't heard of.. and give them a shot, and give thanks to what gaming was and for the path it has provided to get us to where we are now. When I see lists like this, I just roll my eyes and ignore them. It’s almost like they just took a group of buddies that have the same odd opinions about a handful of games and let them make a list. That and maybe they’re too young to know their gaming history. ...and if they don’t know gaming history, they shouldn’t be writing a piece like this or even writing for a gaming magazine. They don’t take into account history. That’s a major mistake. There are so many games that deserve to be higher just for what they did historically. If you don’t use history and timing as a measuring gauge for a best of list, it’s just a fan favorite list. That’s a much different article. It’s ok to have an article like that, but don’t call it “best games.” Call it Joe Knowitall and his drinking buddie’s favorite games. That’s a different rating system and it’s perfectly fine.

this list is crazy. As someone with 3+ decades of gaming on every platform console, pc, handeld etc. A good game or best games of all time needs to factor in many things which i think were not included like mario 64 for example not only a great game, but also showed that the transition from a 2d space into 3d can be done well and with that it showed how games could utilize various camera angles or allow the user to control the camera. I could go on and on why so many important games were either left off the list or placed in the wrong sections. A fair list would be to have a open poll with gamers from each age demographic and then take that compiled data and select a panel of industry veterans who are well respected to debate and refine the list. I think doing it that way they could have come up with something a little more close to reality. If anything you guys are right speculating that this list had to be put together by someone young working for that magazine who has not lived and watched the gaming industry change from the 8 bit era until now. Its a damn shame so many great PC games from the 80's-2000's were left off this list. Just the sierra titles alone and lucas arts etc. This list for the most part can burn in hell and die.

Final Fantasy 6 is totally better than 7. Final Fantasy 6 is art. And Super Mario Bros. 3 is a great game, but Super Mario World is a step above it.

I'm gonna let you guys in on a little secret: Game Informer has ALWAYS sucked, and most things they put out, ESPECIALLY top lists of any kind, also suck. It's no mystery. The only reason GI is even still around as a magazine, is because they tied into Gamestop, one of the only game shops in town for most people, who subsequently try to peddle practically the ONLY game magazine left going. It certainly isn't because GI is popular, or of higher quality than former competitors like Game Pro, or EGM, etc.

I'm so tired of Call Of Duty being on everyone's list as if it was made by the gaming gods. That series is so overhyped and people literally jack off at the sound of COD. In fact I believe COD ruined gaming because of the multiplayer bullshit. I say this because games that have a lot of potential get mishandled because they always wanna focus on the multiplayer aspect and the rest of the game suffers because of it.

Tetris is what really bugs the shit out of me. Does it seriously deserve the number 3 spot? Yes, it's an addictive game, yes it made a huge impact to the industry, but the game is as much of a timewaster as games like Candy Crush and Angry Birds. If it was listed at top 15-25 at least, I'd understand it but number 3 on the list? And TLOU is on top 25. That game is not better than most of the games below it. TLOU is not better than RE4, since that game almost ripped off the OTS gameplay style.

I recently have thrown nostalgia out the window when I consider the greatness of games. Very few old games measure up to newer ones. Super Mario 3 & World, Zelda: LTTP are the only ones I still hold in the same regard I did back then.

You guys are 100% right. Games that are so new are still living off of hype rather than how long after they were made are they still able to be enjoyed. They need to definitely have been out for a certain amount of time before they are on the list.

Melvor nailed it there. In the editor blurb in that issue #300 , the editor claims they have a completely different staff than the last one 9 years ago. In 9 years a number of things will be different if they go to #400. Also as someone told me the #1 in issue #200 was the Legend of Zelda : Link to the Past. So it seems to have held that spot. My big question was where Arkham City and Asylum ranked. lol.

Ninguy the witcher 3 has become a staple though, 3 years later and still people are non-stop talking about it as the new benchmark open world game, especially in terms of rpgs. Not only that but the fact that it's a polish developer with very little backing makes it all the more impressive. It's absolutely debatable whether it's top 10, 20 or 30 but its accolades sort of speak for themselves.

Nergal134 True. It's not a bad game from what I've heard and maybe does set a new benchmark, but so did Skyrim. But does/did the Witcher really CHANGE the way RPGs are being made and played. Monster Hunter: World is on there because it is officially now Capcom's highest grossing game of all time. The franchise never had this much recognition before. Because it drew in the casual mainstream players it became an instant hit. Even if something is new, if it's breaking an all time record, especially in the short amount of time it's been out, it deserves to at least be on a list like this imho

It's a crime that the highest grossing arcade game of all-time wasn't on the list, yet Dig-Dug, which I don't even consider to be in my top 10 of the 80's arcade games was on there. Daytona USA was a monster hit in the arcades and definitely one of the top 5 arcade games of all-time.

Chrono Trigger at 16, FFVI at 6? FFVI ten places above Chrono Trigger? That's one major bullshit. FFVI is a great JRPG, but Chrono Trigger tops FFVI at almost everything. Chrono Trigger is practically a JRPG made by the dream team with some of the most well known creators: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, Nobuo Uematsu. Yasunori Mitsuda made his debut in composing one of the finest music in a video game industry.

Terrible list. Although, even tho they’re still new games, Red dead released in 2010 and Skyrim in 2011. So those are newer than obviously games like odyssey. Terribly constructed list though! It's all subjective anyway. My all time favorite game is a tie between Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy IX. Favorite puzzle: Tetris FPS: Halo 1 & 2 Platformer: Mario 64 Hack n Slash: NieR Automata & MGR: Revengeance Beat em Up: Streets of Rage II. Fuck, even games like Journey, Child of Eden, Shadow of the Colossus, and Kingdom Hearts 1 hold a special place in my heart and I consider them masterpieces.

Bloody hell... this list is agonising. Even as an 18 yr old, who never played anything before the GameCube in its prime, I can agree that this list was bloody awful! Call of Duty 4? CALL OF DUTY 4 IN THE TOP 10? Bullshit. Call of Duty 4 was a great game, but its not top 10 material at all, hell, Doom deserves to be higher. Even HALO COMBAT EVOLVED in my opinion deserves to be placed above Call of Duty 4. Skyrim in top 10? Get the fuck outta here... GTA 5 Top 10? Nope. Where is Mario 64? Where is Ocarina of Time? Where is Doom? Where is Donkey Kong? Where is Resident Evil 4? Where is Super Smash Bros? Where is as Jay said, Tekken 3? Where is Super Street Fighter 2? Where is Super Mario World? Where is Sonic the Hedgehog? Where is Mario Kart? All of these franchises/games have something to beat out a lot of what was in the top 10. Im still missing countless others, but this list was just that bad...

If it were a list of best games (gameplay and enjoyment wise) then I feel as if a lot of newer games would end up closer to number 1 (say for a few) because as time goes on graphics, gameplay, and scope of games gets bigger and better However, if it were a list of important or revolutionary games then I say older games would definitely deserve the higher spots

LttP deserves #1. If you disagree, you are wrong. Mario 3 shouldve been #2 WoW shouldve been more like #10... Also, I feel like there are two ways to do this list. Either choose only the best games (using todays standards) or using the impact a game had on the industry. If we were using the latter metric, the top 3 wouldve been Mario bros, Super Metroid, and Doom. On this list, aLttP wouldnt come near the top 100. But if we are talking about fantastic games by todays standards. AlttP is one of the few classic games alongside SMB3 that not only hold up today, but can still teach game design to a new generation.

Bioshock definitely deserves to be higher than tekken. I like tekken and tekken 3 is a landmark fighting game. But bioshock when it came out had such a huge impact. It some ways it really brought storytelling back to AAA games.

I hope you know that Final Fantasy 6 is the one you back in 94 got as "III" instead of "VI". And if VII would not win the race chances were high VI or IX would do. They are just that popular by so many people. VI is the one that is constantly mentioned in "Wah VII is overrated, VII sux" fanboy wars.

Couple beefs with your points Jay: Baseball Stars is much, much better than Bases Loaded, and is a much deeper game all around. Also, Street Fighter II, or whatever iteration they put into the list, is both way more influential and a better game than Tekken 3. The top 10 is mostly fine, imo. COD revolutionized online shooters, which is fucking huge. If you are willing to recognize WoW, you should be willing to recognize COD. ALttP is widely accepted as the best Zelda game. I don't think Rockstar should have gotten both RDR and GTA5 in the top 10, both should be top 20, one in top 10, probably RDR. FF6 is a vastly superior game to FF7. FF7 has not aged well, and isn't even considered the best FF on the PS1 (FF9 is better). The Witcher 3 is an absolutely amazing game, and outpaces Skyrim in every way. The only game I truly have beef with is Skyrim, which is so buggy, and the combat is so weak, even at the time it came out. I would have had Super Metroid in the top 10, and I personally thing SMW is better than SMB3 in every single way.

Baseball Stars definitely deserves to be on the list, but Bases Loaded should be there too. It was the definitive baseball game at the time. RBI was ok, but its not on the list because the baseball genre was flooded at the time. Bases Loaded, Baseball Stars, Tony Larussa Baseball on the Genesis should be there as should Ken Griffey Baseball. Those 4 baseball games all were fun, innovative and overall the best for their time. I cant speak to The Show, because honestly I still play Griffey, Larussa and Stars. So... lol

it's always subjective listing the best of all time - your choices are based on nostalgia. My 16 year old son loves Skyrim , he's nostalgic for it as he's played it on every system release, every iteration since its release...it means the world to him so it sits nicely in the top 10...for him...personally I want more Monkey Island - Nostalgia see, no Nintendo in our house growing up, but we did have an Amiga...oh and an Atari 800xl - where's Whirlinurd on this list? hehe

Concerning the topic of fighting games: I agree completely with T3 deserving a higher spot. I would rate it at least on par with MvC2 and SF3S. I don't know how exactly the ranking works out on the list, but MK(X) should be knocked down below all of these 3 games for sure.

Agreeing where each game should go is impossible because this type of list is purely subjective. That said, I have no problem with Red Dead and Skyrim being in the top ten, and while Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game, I don't know that it would be my number one. If you guys really want to be pissed off, check the Reader's Choice top 300, it will get your blood boiling even more.

This is why as an adult. I cant subscribe to these magazines. Younger gamers are handicapped from the start making an "Best of All Time" list. They can't truly appreciate the progression of new technologies, graphical advances, and the general uniqueness of games. Games like marble madness and wetrix aren't the best games in the world. But were innovative and unique. I think once a game has a "greatest hit" version. They shouldn't even qualify.

And that reasons is sales, not quality. Every COD or even Fifa gets some sort of "game of the year" or "greatest hits", but neither I would dare naming top-100. Those games profit of the fans (the 12 YO kids screaming thru the mic, remember...), recycle a lot of (not all!) succesful content from previous releases and dump a new one every year, but neither does really do anything for the industry as a whole.

Its not like Contra had a greatest hits version. Im just referring to the newer consoles. Like Grand Theft Auto V and God of War 3. As Jay was stating earlier. There should be some criteria with regards to time of release. By no means should a new game make the list based on having a "greatest hits" . Witcher 3 had a "complete edition" release and on the cover it stated it received over 800 awards. Do I agree that it should rank that high... I'll decide when I finally play it. LOL

Polymath realistically I can. If something that came out recently that creates a new standard for future games. Then yea. Jay mentioned Minecraft.. I’ve never played it but it’s a genre that’s not going away anytime soon. Grand Theft Auto push the limits of what’s allowable in a game and created a genre that’s also not going anywhere. World of Warcraft pushed the MMO genre into a staple of gaming. So I can see some merit with the list but some other games are so out of place in my opinion.

While I agree that having a game a few months old in a list is probably jumping the gun. 5 years seems a bit much. The Last of Us came out less than 5 years ago and you can easily make the argument for it being one of the best video games of all time.

I can just imagine how the guys/gals at game informer got a poll going in their office for this top 300. I appreciate the ranking of some of the obscure or oldschool games on this list but like you guys said, this list is way off. It would be hard for any single person to put together a list, some of the games I'm sure deserve to be on here but I haven't played them all. Link to the past deserves to be in top ten as does Mario 3, and probably super mario kart. Skyrim deserves to be in top 5. But I ask how Metal Gear Solid or FF7 aren't in top ten? 3rd Strike is better than MvC2 and Tekken 3 combined imo. Though I can see why a lot of people dislike it considering the learning curve is way harder in 3rd Strike than most fighting games. It is very deceivingly simple, especially when it comes to high level play. Modern Tekken is the only thing that has it beat for me. I don't want to have to study like a Harvard medical student just to get satisfaction from playing a fighting game. Guess there's a reason the competitive scene is dominated by Korean players, and has been for years. Them and Pakistan seem to be the only ones that wanna put the real work in. I also just wanna say, 3rd Strike gave us the most iconic FGC moment ever. LETS GO JUSTINNN!

COD game in a top 300 of all time ??? If you was to put a FPS War game on there then my vote would of been a Battlefield game.. Honestly this top 300 is complete Bull #h?t, a Zelda game at number 1 (There is millions of games that have been developed over the past 50 years) the list should of been done by experienced gamers over the age of 30, in there 30's 40's and 50's that have no prejudiced views that have played 1000's of games over there lifetime and look into the history of gaming and what will make a game be allegeable to be in a top 300.. Like 1 Mario game, 1 Zelda game, 1 GTA game, 1 Baseball game, 1 Pac Man game etc. A Mario game is a Mario game to me even if its 2D 3D (Its Mario) 1 Game per franchise.. pick the best one for the top 300.. THIS LIST IS CRAP

I just read this issue. Only thing that made me angry was the lack of new red dead info. The list was okay to me. But I saw red dead on the cover and was like damn thought we were getting more stuff on the game.

I literally have a Witcher III tattoo, and I never thought before playing it that a game post the PS1 era would ever take my #1 game slot. Absolutely deserves to be in the top 10. Also, the idea that Skyrim would be anywhere less than the top 10 is insane, especially if the criteria is “cultural impact” as y’all are talking about. Anyways, good video, it has been fun listening to this while I play Castlevania IV tonight.
