Let's just take a moment to appreciate that Tyrael was always somewhat distorted and shimmering in the D2 cinematics, despite other beings appearing clear and sharp. It really reinforced the lore that the angels were beings made of light and sound rather than flesh and blood, and gave him an otherworldly aura. Contrast that with the appearance of the angels in D3, where they mostly appear as clearly defined corporeal beings with a sense of weight to them.

It's the small details like this! I was having similar thoughts throughout the video too. Honestly, Tyrael could not be more epic than his appearance in D2 - that final scene always gives me shivers because he's just so fucking cool :D

So the Prime Evils didn't kill Tyrael to keep it low, but In the end (of LoD) Tyrael sacrificed his own embodiment when he destroyed the corrupted Worldstone. It took 20 years or so for him to rematerialize a new body just to be 'judged' by Imperius in D3 and Tyrael forsook his immortality that day.

The more I think about the logistics of Marius post-tomb, the more I feel like that's one long and deep plothole. Jared forbade ships out of Lut Gholein until we finished Act 2. Our ship to the Docks of Kurast was possibly the first one from Lut Gholein to Kurast since the troubles began in the desert. The Dark Wanderer himself was just leaving the docks the same time we did, so he too probably arrived via boat... And Marius was close enough behind him to catch the three brothers reuniting. Did... we all come on the same boat or something? Also, if Tyrial was expecting us earlier, he knew the player character was inbound when he confronted the Dark Wanderer in the Tomb. He could have told Marius to seek the Champion. Instead of sending him to Hell.

Maybe Marius left Lut Gholein in the last ship to Kurast before the prince order to retain the ships on the dock. However don't know why when Marius arrive to Mephisto Temple he found the Paladin (that has Diablo inside) already there since we found him as a Dark Wanderer just some minutes after we arrive into Kurast.

@The Monster Under Your Bed Are we sure of that actually? I always more assumed that the Dark Wanderer just teleported away and summoned the same creatures that came out in the intro. Teleportation and Phasing are spells we can learn in Diablo 1 from a book. No illusions though. And why would there be an illusion of the Dark Wanderer there? What's the strategic consideration that is better than the literal miles of hostile jungle that we are going to trudge through afterward?

It is either this, or the assumption that five demons of the kind that we won't see again until Hell, that were seen in the intro of the game emerge when the Dark Wanderer summoned them, have been waiting on Sanctuary for the champion to exit the docks, for a long time. @@lakdav the wanderer (or rather diablo) knew that he was being followed by tyrael aswell it could've simply been a trap set to try and buy time, the game implies quite alot that the attacks don't occur when the wanderer arrives but rather when he leaves, almost no one would bother looking for/follow a random wanderer with everything going on, those that would are cain, his allies and tyrael himself making an illusion that makes it look like you "just missed me" makes it so you are in abit less of a hurry, as you're not quite as far behind

I wonder what exactly Marius' mission would have been if he'd attempted it, Tyrael's instructions were kind of vague and rushed. Did he have to take the soulstone all the way to the hell forge, battling hell's forces himself? Seems unlikely to work out at all. If the Act 3 portal leads directly to the refuge with Tyrael and Jamella, maybe his mission would have been complete then, and that's as far as he needed to get it. At the point, maybe the passage to Kurast was still open and the people there uncorrupted. I always felt that Marius chickened out because he'd seen the forces of hell and was too scared to make the journey alone. What if his fears were all non-issues at the time, and he'd have been perfectly safe? How far did he make it before checking himself into the asylum or wherever Baal finds him?

Azmodan and belial would have easily followed through with tyraels plan to smash the worldstone as they hated and exiled the prime evils. Then Marius would have been tortured for all eternity. The only impossible part of tyraels mission is descending through the temple of light. Which somehow Marius did in the cinematic.

@@jameskillbot2867 That part is not impossible as I hate to say it but most of humanity and this includes Marius are seen as little more than ants if even that scurrying about, if Tyrael used a bit of his power or one of the Prime Evils had hidden or made the soulstone invisible to others senses he could have easily made the trip, who would suspect a person like Marius of having such a mission, outside those that already knew.

The reason I saw was he was there when the portal opened, Diablo and Baal left but Mephisto stayed there until the main character gets there. I don't think there is any way Marius walks past Mephisto into that portal without instantly dying or being captured and taken to Baal directly.

In Act 4 of Diablo 3, the angels and demons fight each other and do little damage to each other. They are no more powerful than the common person when it comes to fighting demons.

I was about to sleep, but then I saw this in my home page 😂 I don't know how true this is, but the Angels might know if an Angel dies (especially one of Tyrael's caliber). IIRC their essence returns to the Crystal Arch, to be remade into a new Angel. All out war would be disadvantageous to Hell's divided forces, even without an Archangel of Justice. In a way, I dont consider him choosing or trusting Marius, it was a decision of need, he had to hold off baal if possible, and if he had kept the soul stone, when baal won, he would of taken it. By giving it to Marius, it would prevent this, in the event he loses, which he clearly does. He told him what to do with it, but he didnt say he and only he could do it.

I've never fully understood the cinematic where Marius pulls out the soul stone. Is that Baal imprisoned there? For some reason I thought it was Tal Rasha but that also makes no sense to me. Can somebody please explain?

The horadrim couldn't imprison Baal in a soulstone because during their fight with him, Baal shattered the stone. Tal rasha then opted to take the largest chunk and trap Baal- but also have the Horadrim chain him to a binding stone where he would wrestle with Baal forever as they inserted the stone into Tal Rashas chest

Baal's soulstone contains a part of his essence, but not the whole thing (unlike the other intact stones). Tal Rasha's own body + the broken soulstone were sufficient enough to contain all of Baal's essence, but Tal Rasha himself would have to endure Baal's will for eternity, aided by the magic of the binding runes beside him. So the physical being who is imprisoned is Tal Rasha, who is possessed by Baal, who has mentally overpowered Tal Rasha's will by this point but is unable to escape from the binding spells. By pulling the stone out of Tal Rasha's chest, Baal's essence is no longer fully contained within the binding spell and that somehow allows him to exploit some sort of magical loophole in order to physically escape from the bindings that are holding Tal Rasha's now-possessed body.

I always understood the soulstones as needing a human/bodily host to suppress the prime evils within as they were not strong enough on their own to contain such evil as they had become corrupted. Initially they might have been strong enough, but Izual tells us that he betrayed Sanctuary by telling the prime evils how to corrupt the stones to their will. Perhaps the Horadrim realized that they would now need a willing human host to contain the stone and be forever imprisoned. We saw what became of Aidan and how the stone, even combined with the righteous warrior's body, could not suppress Diablo's corruption indefinitely.

@@D2FFDK The horadrim never figured out that the prime evils knew how to corrupt the soulstones, they had disbanded due to infighting long before anyone became aware of that. It was dumb luck that Baal's soulstone was broken in the fighting to capture him, leading to the idea to trap him in a willing person.

Are angels similar to demons where they "respawn" after they are killed? If so, it makes more sense to bind Tyrael instead of killing him - similar to why many tried to bind the Prime Evils to the soulstones.

Angels do essentially "respawn" as their demonic counterparts do. However, typically when an angel is killed a new angel is formed from the Crystal Arch, the angel is an entirely different being - different name, personality, everything. When demons are reborn they retain their original being.

What I still don't understand is why Tyrael didn't kill Marius. Tyrael showed that he had the power to stop, or greatly slow time, and jump instantly to Marius and pick him up...soooo why didn't he just do that when he touched the stone toss him into the lava and be like "sorry I shouldn't kill humans but you were about to destroy the entire world so" then bamf back over and stab Diablo game ends. Instead he gets destroyed by Diablo and Baal in extremely weakened forms then proceeds to do nothing for the rest of the game yet everyone revers him as one of the most amazing characters in Dibalo. Tyrael is the Boba Fett of Diablo 😂

My assumption was that he barely had enough power to maintain his physical form after his imprisonment. He was basically made of glass at the time that you meet him in Diablo 2, able to guide you, but too fragile to be of any use in an actual fight. I assume that they bound him instead of killing him because killing him would just mean that another angel would be born to replace him. Binding him denied heaven one of its soldiers until he could be freed. Also, pettiness.

And of course, in D3 Act 3, he boasts about missing the feeling of battle, etc., however, when he joins as a temporary follower, he can't even kill little Fallen mobs when using his 'badass' sword. It's so funny to watch him struggle to against such weak creatures, while the PC mows them down with ease. He is markedly weak compared to Imperious, at least in D3.

i mean, to be honest, the anwser "why did tyrael entrust marius with baals soulstone" is pretty obvious. while he as an archangel was undoubdetly powerful even with his limited time on sanctuary, and both diablo and baal were still weakened (diablo still having to use the body of the wanderer rather than his own true form, baal having been just released and probably also weakened from his very long fight with tal rasha) it was still 2 vs 1. realistically even 2 rather weak people can take out 1 pretty strong fighter, if they've got the right tactics, and i'd be suprised if two of the literal prime evils did not have a vast, almost infinite knowledge of combat tactics. tyrael obviously would have realized that immediately due to his own almost limitless knowledge so then, with no one else around except marius, there simply was no other way for him than to entrust marius with the stone and hope he would be strong enough to actually do as he was told.

Both Diablo and Baal were in weak physical states.You even said it yourself “Diablo,in his weakened wanderer state”.I think your overthinking things.Baal,with Tal Rasha’s entombed body gripped tyreal right before the scene ended,with the scene also ending with baal shooting the other tentacles at tyreal.It’s cleared that he subdued tyreal with the tentacles and binded him to the stone with Magic.Baal,also is a fantastic user of magic.On top of things,believing 5% power Diablo and 5% power baal could have outright killed 100% power tyreal,even with tyreal being restrained is unreasonable.

Humans were offspring of the nephylim which is still OP AF. -Angels couldn't beat Diablo and his boys in millenniums, but supposedly three randys managed to sterilise demons FoB and make a fortune out of it in process (as if they were some pest control). -As far as I know the only time reds managed to score pure win on humans was when they captured a bunch of peasants by surprise and the townsfolk were just to busy to assist the militia. -When a tanned barely dressed girl with a stick can tank a couple of fireballs in the face and then take out raiding party and nulify the damage dealt by them by drinking some strong grass soup, I too would run away from that chick's personal vendetta on me. -At worst bunch of goi managed to cleanse a fortress with full garrison and take out a top tier demon general... On the demon's land! -The little guy in the intro was not running for his life. He was in a hurry to get the cups and plates back in kitchen and kick the demons out of his tavern with a broom or something. Pretty sure he hit his head when he fell and died of suffocating or something. -Creatures that chad enough to not even think about demonic beasts every 30 meters outside the secure camps are just scairy to him at this point. To my understanding, if people would come up with reliable way to travel between worlds, they would crusade both heaven and hell along with vast diversification of both world's gene pools (mongol style). If I were Tyrael, I too would both travel and act in secret. Other less polite people could catch me and use as some talkative lantern or something. It's much easier to ask weightlifter with an axe to kill my enemy to death rather then killing the horned bag youself. Pretty sure that world stone was made out of some U235 analogie or something and poor T destroyed it so that it would not fall in humanity's hands.

There is no god in diablo lore. There was very powerful and gigantic being in the beginning. The being removed all evil from it, now there are good and evil. They fought and both died. Heaven is made of body and soul of good side. Hell is made of body and soul of evil side.
