The point is, people need to know what happened to copyright holders of Gamera. Gamera has been quiet for many years NOT because of the popularity of the franchise, but been through financial difficulties.

Thanks for this awesome retrospective! I am from Russia and I've never seen Showa films but when I was in a middle school (early 00s) one of the wildest TV-channels (soft-porn after midnight, ancient aliens in the afternoon) screened Heisei trilogy so millenials in Russia were introduced to the great stuff from the get-go. I remember that one of my classmates stormed into the class one morning and rushed to me and was like "HAVE YOU SEEN A GIANT TURTLE MOVIE YESTERDAY? IT WAS DOPE AF!" Gladly, there was a re-run that day so I've managed to see all three and I remember till this day how great they were. I've rewatched Heisei films last month for the first time since then and ooh my god they are still "DOPE AF"

It took me a couple of days to watch it all, but I finally got through this retrospective. Gamera is my jam, and I really enjoyed watching your thoughts on this franchise. I got into Gamera the same way as you, through MST3K, and I own both the box set of all their Gamera episodes, as well as the complete Arrow Gamera-set with all of the films, as well as tons of extras, including the comics. I just enjoy these films so much, for all sorts of reasons, and it was especially fun to see your reaction to Gamera the Brave, as it mirrored my own. It's a truly excellent and heartfelt family film, but with giant monsters. It just doesn't get any better. Now I need to get around to watch Gamera Rebirth, as I actually haven't seen that one yet! Keep up the good work! 🤘

I love Gamera for the same reason I love characters like Superman or Optimus Prime. He’s a genuinely morally good character. Someone who is willing to fight until the very end to defeat his foe or just take time out of his day to race two kids in a submarine. He lost his home, his people, and now lives in a world that, for the most part, distrusts him and wishes him dead. And yet, he remains a protective and benevolent, albeit not as gentle, force for good. And I love characters like that.

I'm a lifelong Godzilla Stan...but as a younger brother myself, I also have a special affinity for Gamera as the 2nd fiddle who sometimes outshines or stands apart in a fun way to Godzilla. For those intimidated by the vast, 70 year, nearly 40 film legacy of Godzilla...who may find it all a bit dubious to "get into" and properly grasp in a complete way...Gamera is like the short and sweet alternative option. Godzilla has 40 films, Gamera has just 12. This also comes with a much smaller/easier to memorize+understand rogues gallery when compared to Godzilla. Unlike Godzilla..every Gamera film in its uncut form does have a readily available English Dub option. On average, Gamera films are shorter than Godzilla films. Gamera has no robot doppelganger. He never dabbles into time travel. There is no "Son of Gamera" with a cute father son story. Gamera has nowhere near as many alternate timelines and anthology films as Godzilla does. Gamera is much more consistently portrayed as a heroic character, while Godzilla is always being walked along a fine line of being a protagonist or antagonist. Godzilla comes with the weight of a serious Nuclear allegory, so every portrayal that doesn't properly respect those dark origins often gets criticized. Gamera never had such a heavy weight that was so intrinsically tied to his origin, so new portrayal could have much more room to be interpreted and portrayed in unique ways. Gamera is much more of a giant superhero than he is an overt giant monster in the traditional sense. Gamera even has fewer letters to type in his name than Godzilla! Also, there is no "Godzilla vs Gojira" arguments to be had...he's always Gamera...unless he's Gammera. Gamera is honestly just a heck of a lot simpler than Godzilla...and that isn't a bad thing.

Spoilers for Gamera 3 Gamera rescues Ayana because she asked for help, in essence praying. Kaneko has stated that his Gamera is intended as a direct analogue for the God of Abraham. Gamera 3, in particular is a story of maintaining faith in a seemingly disconnected god as he allows, or even causes vast acts of destruction. Ayana and the followers of Iris are essentially malthiests, and so turn to the devil, or antichrist, of this universe, Iris to kill Gamera, believing him to be evil. It's only when Ayana directly witnesses Iris's cruelty first hand (his killing of Moribe and her foster family) that she realizes her error and, in her darkest, most lost moment, she prays for help. And Gamera answers. Ayana and Moribe are killed by Iris, but Gamera performs his final miracle and raises the dead before marching off towards his likely death, much like Jesus carrying his cross. These Christian symbols shouldn't be too surprising, considering special effects director Sinji Higuchi is one of the main creative voices on Neon Genesis Evangellion, with Shinji Ikari even being named after him.

2:15:45 Godzilla BL was kinda meh at first but when the Shin collab happened I was into it and then when they dropped the Gamera collab, I’ve already invested actual money during the part 1&2 collab (as of the time of the comment the last season of BL was pt. 2 of gamera rebirth collab) much more than I possibly ever did in any mobile game since smart phones started even counting pokemon go. Yeah it may be really stupid to invest in a mobile game but I honestly believe Toho is testing the waters with this and see how much attention it got. Here’s to hoping they got a lot of it seeing how we actually got a Pt. 2 of it.

About the location of Terra in "Gamers vs. Guiron": the theory of anti-Earth which is on the opposite side of the Sun was an actual astronomical theory for a many years and I'm pretty sure at the time of the films' release it hasn't been 100% debunked yet.

It's a shame that you watched the "extended version" of Gamera vs Viras. That film exists in THREE different cuts. The original theatrical cut was actually only a little over 70 minutes. The "flashback" was only in the 3 minute range. When the film was imported to the US they needed to fill a proper TV time window. So they just added minutes and minutes of additional flashback/stock footage into THAT sequence to pad the runtime. Luckily the Arrow Video Blu Ray has the shortest(best) version available as a viewing option.
@denniskristos38003 ай бұрын
It was a helicopter, not a plane that was zapped and bisected by Gyaos' sonic beam... The highway construction subplot in "Gamera vs Gyaos", was relevant to Japanese audiences... At the time this movie was made, Japan was in process of upgrading the country's roads, railways and other infrastructure. That program was nationally mandated by the government. There were lots of protests (sometimes riots) by villagers / rural folk whose property and/or livelihoods, would likely be altered by the changes they would experience.

Gotta disagree entirely on the sky battle in Gamera. It looks fabulous for the time and is one of the most thrilling moments of the franchise. CGI doesn't need to look "real" to be effective. They knew know to compose the shots to maximize effectiveness - hence why it's at night in the clouds. CGI is about shot compostion, editing, and the overall design of the sequences it is used in, not just the base "realism" of the models themselves.
@Kaiju-bm4ts10 күн бұрын
Sorry but while you're right, you're also a tad bit wrong. Cgi needs to look convincing in order for the whole thing to work. Yes shot composition and editing is important too but if the cgi is painfully obvious not rendered or unfinished, then that's the 1 thing that holds it back for some
@nope565710 күн бұрын
@Kaiju-bm4ts Sure. But I don't find it "painfully obvious" in the least. So...🤷
@Kaiju-bm4ts10 күн бұрын
@@nope5657 I think the cgi looks good as well, I'm just saying in general, the cgi needs to look convincing to some degree. Compare the cgi in godzilla 2000 to gamera 3. Both films came out the same year and it's obvious which film used it's cgi better

I could be wrong because to be honest I have not seen very many Kaiju movies and that includes Gamera, but it seems like a big difference between American low budget monster movies and Japanese low budget monster movies is that in the American ones they don't like to show the monster off too much because the horror is suppose to come from the tension of not knowing where the monster is and even when the monster is shown it's very quick or the lighting is very dim and they really try to sell you on the realism of the monster. But in the Japanese ones the monster isn't hiding. It is right there and it cannot be missed because it's bigger than skyscrapers. Yet the monster is obviously fake and they don't try to hide that. Instead of the fear of the unknown it becomes the fear of the inevitable because while the monster is clearly fake and silly looking it's still going to pick you up and devour you while everyone else can do nothing but just watch in horror. I'm sure there are Japanese movies which hide the monster and American movies which show it but it seems like it could be a thing. I dunno what do you think?

@Kaiju-bm4ts10 күн бұрын
No there isn't. Gamera only had his showa and heisei eras. There is no millennium era for gamera as 1. Millennium era is just a fan term for 6 godzilla films and 2. The terms showa and heisei are political time periods in Japan. There was no political time period in Japan called the millennium era. 3. Kadokawa on 2 separate occasions released heisei gamera era box sets and placed gamera the brave in there with the trilogy despite it not being connected to said trilogy

ryan i'm not sure how you somehow entirely missed my favorite film in the franchise. it's called gamera vs the skibidi gyatt(1972). it's the one where the japanese government decides gamera has L rizz (clearly wrong) and sends him to ohio to get fanum taxed. you should watch it.
